The actress playing young Sammy's mother is the great Ethel Waters. She was at the height of her Broadway fame when she did the soundie featured in this video.

and to think that this greatest of cultured men never set one foot into a school room. Wrote six books himself, conversed with presidents and kings, loved all humanity and God bless me, was my godfather and it doesn't get more wonderful than that.

sadly he was being exploited, but the true test of this man is that he has triumphed and hs spirit lives on, more than 20 yrs post his passing!
