I was there for this! I was at the two prior attempts as well. What an awesome experience. It was 12:30 in the morning but it looked like daytime. I was completely in awe.
That noise comes from the Sound Suppression Water System, it's the air being displaced and pushed out by the flooding water...creates a whistling noise
I was there to see that launch... I was like 9 year old and i can remember it perfectly. You stand a few miles away over this lake and the sky just lit up like it was day time. It also gave off a very dainty heat. It was one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen.
can't explain it but for some reason, it just looks more impressive seeing it take off at night. I really need to see a night launch before they ground the shuttle
I think Eileen proved herself on this mission more than any other astronaut of her time. Short of a few guys like Hoot Gibson or John Young...even Rick Hauck.
Probably the most unlucky mission of the STS program - except of those that ended with disaster... RSLS abort at T-7 sec... when it finally launched there was nearly catastrophical failure, and then LOX low level cutoff... And some problems on orbit.
this was actually a slightly scary launch. 2 sensors failed 5 seconds after launch, then after that a pin came loose inside a fuel injector on a main engine and caused a leak of hydrogen. this caused a slightly lower than planned orbit.
This shuttle barely made it into orbit with malfunctions and alarms during ascent. The irony is that it was Columbia.

Thanks, mianbentley! What about that "humming" sound? At the beginning of the video.

Where is that whistling sound coming from? Great video!

This is a picture perfect take-off imo, thanks for posting :)

I saw the STS-88 launch, and I agree, absolutely SPECTACULAR!

I think STS-51F wins that title.
O-Rings,RSLS abort, abort ATO, almost ditched. Almost lost two engines.

Poor Eileen Colins. She was getting shaken about enough during launch and then had to radio in to Mission Control on the sensors!

This mission almost had an RTLS Abort.

This one and STS 51 F must be the nearest they have been to have to perform a TAL Landing or a Bailout of the crew.

Too bad this angle doesn't show the leak in the engine nozzle, it's clearly visible in at least one other tracking shot. Bad luck launch, indeed.
