You were having a bad day, but you seem to be a very passionate man. When you feel something, you feel it deeply. Don't apologize for showing it. I think the tone showed how you were feeling. Poverty is obviously an incredibly frustrating thing for you. You have every right to show it.
Why censor emotions. Why is it not ok to be angry ? If nobody vented we would explode and thats worse...people get hurt by being repressed in this way. Why do we apologise for being angry about something...its a normal natural part of being human.Psychotic britain = repressed anger...Tada !
Tone is indeed important. If you look at George Galloway and Noam Chomsky, they actually say many of the same things. However, Chomsky comes across much more credibly because he doesn't get all angry and shouty like Galloway.
Galloway's anger and shoutiness make him sound more passionate than Chomsky. You get the feeling that if there were ever a revolution, Galloway would be in the trenches with you, motivating everybody and willing to die for his beliefs. I don't see that in Chomsky. It's a good thing Galloway is on the left, I'd hate to think how somebody with his charisma could rally the right-wing.
This alone proves that tone can be used to bring out emotions from vulnerable listeners (like the youth). This aids to prevent critical thinking for both opponents and supporters of the speaker's ideas, and so avoid or delay refutations(especially in a debate), and nurture the confirmation bias of supporters. This is exploited by both religious and poiltical leaders (eg. Hitler's speeches). Tone is not necessary if the delivery is rational, and those who can see through emotions prefer that way.
Even in a less toned speech, arguments can be used to provoke emotions in opponents to bring them temparorily closer to the speaker's ideas. Here tone would act as a catalyst for the speaker's ideas.
Maybe you could do a video with a small text and say it over in all different 'tones' to show the example of how the same thing can be construed in many different ways. Reminds me of the experiment of a sentence with no punctuation."woman without her man is nothing". men punc. like this "woman, without her man, is nothing." women like thus "woman. without her, man is nothing"
Tone tends to resolve when you think through the content. Ultimately your problem was the content - the thought process, the scapegoating. It was a cheap, intellectually bankrupt attack, projecting your own guilt about consumption and privilege onto a class who tend to be poorer and more disempowered than you. It's irony, but few will notice, because it's also a cliche. And playing on the popular bigotries of the day - while not worthy of even an amateur intellectual - will sell books, so...
If you don't put it on you tube, how the hell are we going to know what you are up to, showing off or not, it's always very entertaining, I'm not sure wanting people to know what you're about is showing off anyway, it seem you're still beating you self up about your "Mr Angry" video, everyone has " the worlds a git" days, you're human.
Can't wait for the book, but I suppose it will take a while before it comes out.
My God you've finished your book quickly. I tried to write a story in competition with a freind. I made a cock up of mine and he's done 9 chapters and is trying to get it published. The bastard.
Understanding tone is as complicated as understanding body language etc...
There are umpteen degrees of tone in any given circumstance (stuff you would have played around with in a drama group). Your input to this forum is light entertainment with some interesting opinions. Don't fret about it too much, we're all human, well apart from Kryten, poor little condom headed mechanoid.... :-D
It's great that a profeessional communicator (that's you Rob) can learn something about communication from such a 'small' medium. It's also great that you are still open to learning about your craft, as many seem to become rather full of them self after a while(and can't be told anything either).
Your sheet could do with an iron Rob. Why don't you get a green screen and have a bash at chroma keying? Mind you, you'd need a fair bit of lighting for that.
Well I think that taking a year to do something useful sounds really neat and I wish that Robert would share with us to inspire us all to do more...but I understand the philosophy of not wanting to brag about it. If you want to do something good for the sake of doing something good...can you do that while benefiting from it by telling others? I think it's about tone in a way. It's about intentions. If you want to do something even better than doing something useful, inspire others to do so.
If I argue with someone I know I cannot reach (provided they aren't armed and snarling), but I MUST argue for the sake of accuracy or my own honesty, or a gullible audience, I tend to be sarcastic, while constantly on the look out for points I can concede so that it isn't all one way traffic. If I'm talking to someone who is actually trying to learn (provided I have facts to impart) I imagine them to be my own child, even if they 20 are years older than myself.
Yup there's no instant feedback so you don't know if people are getting the message you're trying to send and you can't moderate it. I find it really hard to get the tone right in comments sometimes and people can take things a different way. Very hard to be jokey when it's written. Cheers, Lesley
I suppose you do need to be wary of your tone, committing something to 'video' forever and whacking it out there, but then again, your 100 people thing still wasn't THAT bad, Roberto.
My wife wants to know if she can iron your backdrop for you mate?
I'm not really concerned about overall tone. I've enjoyed your honesty and down-to-earth style. You've never put on airs of "oh I'm a celebrity...be impressed." Instead, I've enjoyed seeing a fellow human trying to work out the complexities of himself and the world around him. If you get too burdened by tone, you'll just start censoring yourself and being selfconscience. Just be yourself!
Actually, I thought that your 100 people video has been one of your best. More importantly then tone is enthusiasm and passion. Angry, happy or sad, I'll enjoy any open show of emotions.
you want to practice your tone? Work at a Call-Center.. It's all about tone! Man, and it's hard to have the "right" tone with people 8 hrs a day 5 days a week for years.. uhmm do I sound like someone who works at a call-center much?
Your right, on stage you have two elements tone and delivery. But when writing the delivery needs to be changed into structure, which means you need to build up story from carefull blueprints.
Regardless of a live audience, anything meant for public consumption becomes a dialogue, and YouTube videos are no exception. While its important for a vlogger(?) to see that their tone accurately conveys the emotion behind their words, it is also the responsibility of viewers to discern that other factors may enter in. No argument is more frustrating to defend than "It's not what you said, its the way you said it".
While I agree that tone is an important factor, I'd add that to an equal, or greater degree, it comes down to interaction and immediate feedback. If you see that your tone is wrong and not getting the right reaction, or is causing misinterpretation, you can adjust according to direct visual or audible criticism, luxuries that "wall facing" media doesn't offer us when we create content, beit written or multimedia.
With boots on in a dark cave, you can't tell you're foot's going in deep kimchi.
I've learned from my YouTube mistakes. I made an angry vid, and it got slated and made me look nieve. YouTubers (not all of them) just want to be entertained. people in general don't seem to like other people's opinions. it's just a fact of life. if they don't like what you have to say, they can go watch something else! keep up the blogs no matter what comments you get :)

@TheMeltingSnowman John, where Dave had had 'had had', had had 'had'; 'had had' had had the examiner's approval.
This used to be given with no punctuation as an exercise to us mere students. Eleven 'hads' all in a row and I still remember the bloody thing.

Did you write that with a dictionary?
Clearly you haven't watched any of the series because this is a biased rather than accurate description of "Making Do."
Maybe "amateur intellectuals" should keep their opinions to themselves, noone else wants to hear them...
