Sheer quality though noone touches Sawchuk, the guy was a wall.  A lot of people tend to forget that Marty has been playing in an era where goalie's pads are just huge. The game has become much more reliant on those pads.

but don't forget what era sawchuk played in. Back in those days sticks were flat. you'd get 5 goals against you in a week rather than in one game like today. The league wants more scoring, and yet brodeur had 12 shutouts last season!!! Pads did get bigger, but brodeur has nowhere near the same size pads Guigere, Luongo, and Lundqvist have. Hasek did turn buffalo around, but he couldn't win a cup with them, he had to ray bourque with detroit.
