they probably used a clarinet mouthpiece, hence why they called it a clarinet. But to me it's more like a saxophone. They probably just couldn't fit a sax mouthpiece into the watering can hole.

i think he decided to go with calling it a clarinet because of the fingering pattern and the 6 holes. Which I think makes it more like a suped-up recorder but it would be closer to clarinet than a saxophone.

it is simple to make a clarinet, choose a solid tube of some sort follow the bohiem flute hole placement and ad reed and mouth piece. more than anything the reed does most of the work
