  • what i love is that christians got offended by all these things but they missed what the film was really laughing at. it was laughing at christians and how they blindly follow a book with little evidence of truth.

  • gotta love sweden "so funny they banned it in norway"

  • 1:30

They totally banned the film in Norway, but in my country "Sweden" it was shown everywhere and they said that this film is so funny, that they banned it in Norway.

    Holy shit, that's funny. LOL

  • a pilatus who cannot spell an "r" -- i never got that kind of humour, i think their films are simply lousy compared to the tv series!

  • the crucifixiation scene is one of the best and most important -- because it ridicules this stupid belief that the "cross" is something holy -- though it was just the favourite killing machine of the romans -- as likely we could be have hanging gallows or wheels on our walls - it has nothing to do with real christianity -- adoration of pain is not christianity, it is just the "scare the kids" departments of the church , who objected most of course -- ha ha charade you are!!

  • calling something blasphemous when you haven't even seen it is the height of small-mindedness.

  • St Paul tells you? Think for YOURSELF, otherwise get the fuck off this planet, because you are irrelevant.

    Go on – fuck off.

  • John Beyer represents everything that is wrong with the UK. Small minded, petty, official, politically correct, narrowminded, boring!

  • hilarious that the guy goes we are at a disadvantage that we have to turn the other cheek, which means that he does not believe in the value of it he just has to do what he.s been told

  • Crucifixion at the time was a widespread form of punishment in Roman times.

  • Faen ta det haha

  • This is kind of obvious, but 5 people are homosexual Fundamentalist Bishops with very large iron crosses.

  • If the people who were against Life of Brian could legally burn Pythons at the stake, they would do it. Religion is so damn violent, so much violence in the bible alone, with god killing people left and right without pity and telling his followers to show no pity... It's disgusting. And just think of all the violence that occured, and still going on, between people of different religions, and they're so insane they're not afraid of dying because it's "god's will".

  • Actually Norwegian people are quite funny. I think the ban of "Life of Brian" happened because of politicians. Not because the people wanted to. Norwegians are no more religious than danish people, and we are not that religious.

  • I still can't believe that Norway of all places banned it.

  • I don't think that god the creater of the universe and all mankind would be petty enough to be offended by The life of Brain. If he is then is a twat much like John Beyen.

  • @SirSodit I would add to this that if God really was offended by the concept of Life of Brian, he could have made sure that the Monty Python team would never have thought to make it.

  • @tsninjapirate Oh my God I just made a point very similar to that in part 3 I think it was. I said that God must have liked it or it wouldn't have been so successful let alone released.

  • I think all the Python fans on here should get together and do a remake of LoB like Terry Jones suggests and see what happens ... Either that or protest these idiots' insistance and taking everything so literally.

    could be interesting.

  • Anyone else think that the douche wanting to renounce Jesus' call to pacifism looks a lot like that one Nazi from Indiana Jones?

  • Notice how the religious person quotes lines from the Bible and states that they are "weaknesses". How interesting to not have a sense of irony...

  • I am from Norway and do not really see the logic to the ban of this film in 1979. Norwegians are not a very religious people, we are more laid back and not as uptight as the swedes and maybe that is why they made such a big fuzz about the norwegian ban of the movie :)

  • Not one part of the film belittles Jesus. It contains humor, intellectual exercise, and important life lessons.

The only people upset are those who masochisticly desire to enslave themselves (and everyone else) under their cult of the divine tyrant.

    Thank for the post.

  • If you protest and want to silence dissenting views of your faith, then it says more about your faith than the dissenting view.

  • "We don't have the power to make films. We don't have the money to make films..." Is this guy talking about his own group or about Christians? Because if he is talking about Christians, he is completely full of crap. There are plenty of films made by Christians, that support their beliefs, and that cater to them. I find it ironic when Christians claim they are persecuted when you can't even say you're a non-believer, at least in the US, without people getting outraged.

  • 1:01 - 1:09 AMEN.

  • 4:39 what can you say about John Beyer? Not the sort of guy who looks like he'd be much fun socially. You can bet your life he's still a virgin, or a raving homosexual.

  • The funny thing: monty python makes fun of stupid followers not christ and stupid followers thinks they make fun of their god. Thats the real comedy, thank you monty

  • I think its strange of them to lump all Christians in the same heap. There must have been many Christians who went and loved the movie and were not in the least bit offended. I know I wasn't one bit. How ridiculous to be offended by something so unoffensive. But also ridiculous for them to accuse all Christians, as many do believe that crosses are graven images. And it is against the Christian doctrine to be mad when people ridicule you even though this is not ridicule.

  • religious people, shite its movie about how stupid you all to believe in a guy who lives in the sky and tells u that if u don't believe in me you will burn forever!! AND ITS PROBABLY THE FUNNIEST MOVIE EVER MADE

  • the sequence with the shoe(or is it a sandal) , the gord and the arguing masses is i think the best bit of satire about the current relgious climate in the world ever written and performed, it just works on so many levels, as a child i laughed at the silly bickering and of course my beloved Spike Milligan at the end, and as i grew up and re-watched it i got the message behind that scene, simply brilliant comedy writing... how can you top it?

  • @lickstickly Agreed! I first saw it when I was 11 and didn't really get it.

I was also being raised as a catholic, but even then I didn't believe it all the crap in holy books.

I preferred the Brothers Grim for my fairytales.

  • could you add the subs? I am not a native speaker, I can't understand every word, but it's so interesting!

Or at least could you write me what Terry Jones and John Cleese said (1:00-1:30)?

  • @alinemerrow im curious as to why you need subs? your English seems fine to me?

  • @lickstickly Sometimes when people speak fast, I can't understand it. Well I get the pattern from a video with no subs, but they'd be helpful.

  • These sort of christian fanatics who take everything literally are what alienated me from christianity

  • Im Welsh and i better not be crucified next to a smelly Swede ;-)

  • @lickstickly we dont smell THAT much...sniff... or maybe we do

  • @lickstickly And I am Swedish, and I would never even consider being crucified next to a rotten little welsh!

  • @Greatkingrat88 and dark lego22 was only kidding, im sure you could hum some abba or 'the hives' music to me to ease my passing lol

  • @lickstickly I was kidding too, and I'm pretty sure DarkLego22 was kidding too :D

  • So strange it was banned in Norway which is today one of the most non religious countries in the world..

I watched this with my class some years ago and nearly everyone tought it was very funny.

  • @yurf9 Norway may be non Christian, but I would keep an eye on those Muslims if I were you.

  • @cantleysugar They're drinking strong, sugary tea, watching TV and one of them is reading a newspaper. I'll get back to you with further updates as necessary.

  • "I don't know what you all believe, and I don't really care... But you have to admit that beliefs are odd. Lots of Christians wear crosses around their necks... you really think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a fucking cross?

That's a bit late going to Jackie Onassis with a little sniper rifle pendant"

    Bill Hicks

  • @donstuie i remember watching that and chuckling pretty loudly. So true, though...

  • "The world's a madhouse and most people are operating in fantasy anyway..."

  • At around 1:00, Terry Jones, for the win.

  • @OxTheWriter

Terry Jones for the win again at 7:25!

  • @bernardcz92,

We could do that all damned day for this one, couldn't we? The entire series of videos for "Secret Life of Brian" is just a big bucket of win.

  • BEST RELIGIOUS MOVIE EVER

  • Have to agree with Gillian about the best/favourite scene in the film; it's inspired!!

  • It was a clever film, but at least some of the Pythons apparently don't try to understand the Christian faith. Christ died for us -- for you and for me. Christians do not, of course, glorify that torture, but we do glorify the Love that submitted itself (himself) to that torture for all of humanity.

  • @Boltario Okay, so it's more about the symbolism, rather than a sadistic worship of a form of torture. I get that.

But so do these guys. Don't underestimate them in that way; what the more intelligent of the world's population will understand is that this film illustrates the religious hysteria that existed in this time. It WAS clever. And strangely, if the film was to be released now, it would STILL spark the same response........

  • @Boltario There are festivals in South American countries where people re enact the crucifixion in a very real way that is painful, flogging, crown of thorns. Christ died for you perhaps if that is what you believe but in essence I am my own 'God' and therefore my own judge of what is good and evil. Do you believe it is wrong to have the control and ability to govern oneself and to decide for oneself what is correct?

  • @Itscaj @Itscaj Nope, not at all. We all have the God-given ability, opportunity and responsibility to make our own decisions, and we can do so wisely or poorly. It's called free will. Christians, however, believe that there are both temporal and eternal consequences for the decisions we make.

If Christianity taught as Terry Jones characterizes it Christians would glorify the Roman authorities for crucifying Christ. Should you find any Christians who actually think that way, let me know.

  • @Boltario Well considering the fact that Christianity spawned from Judaism its probably very likely some thought that way, Jesus and all of his followers were Jewish in his time using him to get back at the governing power. 'Christ died for your sins' so presumably if the Romans hadn't crucified him, then Christians would remain sinners...?

  • @Boltario You twit, the Pythons had grown up with religion. They did their research, and knew what christianity was- and is- about.

  • "This film is so funny, they banned it in Norway" That was amazing

  • What've the Christians ever done for us?

  • I wish there was a film lampooning Eric Idle!

  • guy who said it was an insult lol he bald got a grudge then lol mmedia watch taken over by christians lol pissing myself lol

  • Crusifictions a doddle, what I would do to be crucified... Lucky, lucky bastad! Best thing the Romans ever did for us.

  • If i were a progressive council member i would simply write back to Council of Light - "Fuck you, fuck you very much; we'll think for ourselves" No Christians here have any objections?

  • I love the Gimp at 0:45! He apparently missed ALL the teachings of Christ about what His followers could expect from living out their faith, that He sent them out as sheep among wolves, that in this world they would have tribulation, but they should suffer it without complaining and he would give them peace in the midst of the storms of life.

This guys just showing that he can't even be a happy Christian without secular protection. Rather weak, I think.

  • Hmmmm. The Christ I believe in has sense of humor.

    But that's just me. :)

  • @mooseasaurusrex same here, i personally believe that Jesus would be able to see the humor in this film. He seems like a pretty chilly guy in my mind ;]

  • @iPhew i meant chill not chilly >_>

  • I think religion is something very personal. People shouldn't be told what's right or wrong, Just let them think for themselves. And yes, people CAN do that.

  • Why should we be afraid of giving offence? What kind of world would we live in if we all didn't express our view in case it offended someone?

Religion had its day. It is no longer relevant to modern times. I'm glad it's dying.

  • its no offenceive you stupid tit. anyone with a mind for themselves can plainly see that. thats why it is called 'the life of BRIAN' not 'the life of JESUS' ffs. get that into your stupid closed minds. the ending it trying to be light on the subject and its funny, and as far as you concerned he 'comes back to life' anyway!!!!!! so i dont know what your making a massive hissy fit over. oh and that woman is a complete whore aswell.

  • @Oliviaeatscake: let it be offensive, who gives a flying fuck about them being offended? No matter what anyone says or does that proves their beliefs to be exactly what they are, in other words STUPID, they will cry OFFENSIVE! The only way they can be happy is we all just shut up and stop THINKING just so that they can keep their delusions.

  • they annoy me so much.

  • 4:53

Aw, those poor persecuted (majority of population) Christians.... No, they don't have any money or power at all. Goodness knows how poor the Catholic Church is, for example. Maintaining a whole bloody city is expensive, you know. Also there are all those pedophilic priests to relocate and victims to pay off.

  • toatally agree. all the priests are fucking peados who moleste choir boys. eughh.

  • ugh... crybabies

  • he's not the messiah he's a very naughty boy

  • Woo Terry Jones! Outspoken! Sexy. I love how bold all the Pythons are expressing their opinions. They're great.

  • Well heres a thought, a Life of Brian tribute to Mohammed?

I think Cleese would smile if he saw that :)

  • 'Life of Burhaan' maybe?

Although I think the purpose of making 'Life of Brian' wasn't simply provocing lots of people or ridiculing a secret cow,

as the purpose of making 'Life of Burhaan' would probably be,

but using that cow to make humour (and money...and fame)

and doing something original, intelligent, daring and rebellious.

  • ANY film on Mohammed would get the same reaction, really. It would be nice to see one, after all these Ten Commandments and Passions and such.

  • I would think that seeing as Life of Brain is mocking religous dogma in general, rather than Jesus, a "life of Omar" film would probably be a bit of a repetition.

  • "This film is so funny, it was banned in Norway!" LOL!!

  • Comment removed

  • At 5:06, he thinks it's a disadvantage that the lord tells them to turn the other cheek? Yeah, real pisser that god doesn't want us to hit back. All that peace crap! Who does God think he is?

  • He misses the point; "turn the other cheek" is in contrast to "hide under the table" or "hit back with a big stick with nails in". Stand your ground, turn the other cheek, let the other guy do his worst because it's not going to move you.

I go to church, and I think this movie is the funniest [and one of the most intelligent] ever.

  • Exactly. There's a difference between Martin Luther King Jr (who truly embodied the best Christian virtues) and Christians who murder abortionists and gays, or between Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Osama Bin Ladin

  • 6:38 Makes me think of Scientology, but that should go without saying for normal people.

  • How about Islam?

  • Well that's because of the theocracy. When politics and religion mix you get things like the Inquisition.

  • aye idd... thats the problem : nobody expects some kind of spanish inquisition :O

  • well i think the've all been Very Naughty Boys! :)

  • fuck yeah tell them terry Jones

  • "This film is so funny, it was banned in Norway!" :D Love it!!! Go Sweden!

  • Now I'm really proud of being from Sweden! :D

  • What year was this documentary made?

  • MMVI

  • If Jesus had been a pornstar the religious community would complain that brians dick was too small and it mocked our Lords tremendous endowment that was clearly spoke of in the Gospel of St. Moneyshot.

  • @fringefries well said.

  • The good news is that this film is available on iTunes...wwe wwewease bwian

  • I cannot help to feel sad when I see this documentary. I cant help myself asking when people will stop being so narrow-minded and self-focused on their own beliefs and thoughts of how the world is and will be. It is of course natural for people to defend their way of life but that doesnt justify their way of forcing their life upon others. Religion like science is both a way of life and probably both are needed to live life at its full consent.

  • not one of the funniest... The funniest

  • This Film is one of the funniest film I have seen.

As of offending religion, WHO CARES. I doubt that Jesus would be so insecure as to be offended by a film.

Politically Correctness have made people afraid of speaking what they really think. And that has allowed a group of control freaks to take control.

  • It's time for Life Of Brian II.

  • Ha ha- in the end he says "One of the things that puts us at a disadvantage is that we must turn the other cheek". So, basically, he seems to be saying that something Christ says doesn't help you but instead puts you at a disadvantage!

  • I always find the sheer quantity of arguments in the comments sections beneath videos of this nature surprising. Then I think to myself, fuck, there really are still so many people prepared to defend faith, riddled as they are by their inbred misconceptions. Truly, The Life of Brian is as relevant today as it was upon release.

  • Amazing that after 30 years, this movie is still being discussed. And, with some people, for all the wrong reasons.

  • "I was blind and now I can see- ARRGH!"

Always cracks me up that bit

  • 'Picking on people they know won't fight back.'

You mean like the Judaeo-Islamo-Christian religion murdering doctors, homosexuals, & rape victims? I never understood why that religion thinks it's acceptable to persecute & murder people, & abhors free speech to the point of censorship. Must be all that spiritual 'enlightenment' they insist they have.

  • 'Try again when you're sober.'

Bravo! Well done! Cast aspersions on the person to avoid addressing the argument. That's about as mature, informed & rational as a child in a playground falsely accusing another of being ugly or smelling in an attempt to hide from debate. Even you must be able to do better than that, surely.

Try again? I don't need to, you're defeating your own argument quite thoroughly on your own.

  • This is fun - like rattling the monkey cage.

  • 'like rattling the monkey cage.' Why, are you trying to get out?

To my mind you epitomize the average Judao-Christo-Muslim. You have made utterly unfounded accusations followed by bouts of name calling, culminating in a tantrum. Now you're back & have started exactly where you left off, with unfounded insinuations & transparently erroneous cries of 'foul'.

I'm beginning to suspect your real agenda is to make Christians appear even more bigoted & idiotic than they generally are.

  • Have a banana..

  • Still trying to imply insult to people instead of engaging with the points raised, eh? How unfortunate, though it does speak volumes about your groundless insults & lack of legitimate argument as well as about what you consider to be intelligent.

"the higher one's intelligence or education level, the less one is likely to be religious".

Paul Bell, MENSA Magazine 2002 regarding 43 studies examining correlations high IQ, good education, & lack of religious belief.

    Religion is literally stupid.

  • Have a grape..

  • cant, I think you're the only person I've ever seen incorrectly punctuate an ellipsis repeatedly. Understand then why it's so wonderfully ironic that you repeatedly attempt to criticize others when you can barely pull together a coherent three word message.

I greatly anticipate your next vapid inanity.

  • Have a cup of PG Tips..

  • Have a cock.

  • Ooh I bet you say that to all the boys.

The RSPCA called me yeaterday and said if I don't stop this they'll prosecute me. So sadly this will have to my last missive for the time being. Have the last word with my compliments.

  • Just the pretty ones.

  • They're quite tasty, especially the black ones.

  • Thta's an interesting remark on your side, being as it is, a major part of this documentary is about different religious groups fighting back using the lowest kind of smearing, fear mongering and right out threats against people who don't share their general views. I for one know who I think are the cowards in this controversy...

  • I don't know what you mean. Somebody seems to be deleting my posts, which I take as a back-handed compliment.

  • It's just there on page 2, nobody has censored you. By the way, how would I have been able to reply to your comment if it had been removed? That would call for divine intervention wouldn't it?

  • @cantleysugar You sire, are an ass.

  • @Greatkingrat88 Typical moonbat, nothing to offer but abuse.

  • @cantleysugar "Moonbat"? What an interesting insult, I never heard that one used before.

However, abuse is all you deserve on this page. You're acting immature after making claims you can't even argue properly.

  • @Greatkingrat88 "acting immature"? I had to smile.

Sooner or later you are going to be shaken out of your arrogant complacency, and it won't be a pleasant experience. Think of me then.

  • @cantleysugar Using sesquipedian locaciousness will get you no bonus points with anyone.

And I certainly am not complacent, because to be complacent is to be content... which I really, really am not, not with the world being the way it is.

    Go eat a dick.

  • The thing that puts the christian community at a disadvantage is that they are compleatly fucking insane.

  • I don't think that guy from Mediawatch has had anything even closey resembling sex.

  • 0:59 Right on, Terry!

  • And that defence laywer guy from Gay news, especially at 6:38. Those 2 definately make some of the best insights.

  • These guys are absolute heroes.

  • World is a madhouse and people operating it live in fantasy anyway

Exactly! Just take a look at our looney financial system...

  • the christians do not have enough money? surely they jest.

    look at the vatican.

  • And Norway banned Red Bull too.

Though it's back to legal now I think...

  • "Any religion that makes a form of torture into an icon that they worship seems to me as a pretty sick sort of religion honestly." couldn't put it into words better than that!

  • No, simply because it isn't true, if it is just a symbol of suffering then why do you hold it dearly and kiss it when you are in trouble or need help, or even when you pray. It has become a symbol for christianity if you like it or not.

  • That's one of the points, if a tortured man on a wooden cross is a symbol for christianity then it's a pretty sick sort of a religion wouldn't you say. Oh and how christian, I say something, you don't agree, I'm an idiot.

  • The Norwegians had to go to Sweden to see it. They could also go to see the løveli møøses.

  • 1:20 is great, nothing beats a good norway joke :D

  • What are the next two filns they made?

  • The Meaning of Life (1983); their last film.

  • There aren't many wars that weren't started by religion. Think about it.

  • This film doesn't laugh at Jesus Christ. It laughs at bigots.

  • "I think if you have a religion that cant bear made fun of or laughed at or attacked then its not much of a religion" - Sir John Mortimer

These days its Islam!! ... :~D

  • thx for the upload!!...

  • religions brings war, peoples should live without it, it could be a much better world

  • monotheistic religions you mean.

  • thats a bit unfair actully -afgahnastan and iraq aren't cause of religeon there cause of politics and recources, christianaty is overalll pretty good , it preaches AGAINST war and violence

  • I agree that Christianity preaches against war and violence, but the people that follow the religion are all for war and violence. War and violence make money, and people worship money more and any religion or religious idol. The world would not be in the economic crisis it is today if that was not the case.

  • "christianaty is overalll pretty good , it preaches AGAINST war and violence"

Dream on, If people are going to stick to this blind hypocrisy, we will never get rid of hate... Religion is not about virtue, it's about dogma!

  • So there arent 2 muslim sekts blowing up each others mosks in irak or crazy drugdealing islamic fundamentalist fighting over a worthless country that has opium as its only product? Religion is at the core of these conflicts and its religion that wil prevent them from getting solved in the near future.

  • bottom of the bottom lines...

religion, ALL religion, hate humor and satire because it causes people to laugh and question conventional thought.

and their WHOLE business--and it IS a business-is predicated on the masses not thinking or questioning convention.

or as Mr Gumby might opine..

    "MY HEAD HURTS!"

  • all of the python men are brilliant ['were' in graham's case] and Life of Brian is Python at their peak.

when john and michael were arguing with the bishop, every single one of their points are intellectual and correct.

i am Catholic and believe stongly in my religion, but Life of Brian was merely poking fun at those who blindly follow religious leaders, and a majority of Catholics generally aren't like that, including myself.

Life of Brian will always be one of my favourite movies.

  • John Beyer is a dull sad man.

  • "Any religion which makes a form of torture into an icon that they worship seems to me a pretty sick sort of religion to be honest..."

    Well said...very well said...

  • "This film is so funny, they banned it in Norway!", Hahahahaha. Take THAT Norway!

  • "That'll show 'em!" ;)

  • what would we do if we didn't have swedish comedy XD

  • "our great disadvantage is that our Lord says we have to turn the other cheek"

he doesn't believe in forgiveness but is ordered to forgive and feels at a disadvantage...

ergo: doesn't think for himselfq, but just does what he is told

  • The python team thought that freedom of speech was a problem in the 70s.

But it is nothing compared to the P.C. loony world that we live in today.

Oh, and if anybody in Britain thinks that P.C insanity will go away under the tories.....don't hold your breath.

  • agreed

We need a new Life of Brian now more than ever

    A life of Muhammed preferably
