you're absolutely hilarious, i usually don't take part in skill vs skill discussion but you're a world class idiot if you think lopez is actually better than federer LOL...
el hecho que federer gane partidos como estos, hace que sea uno de los mas grandes de todos los tiempos, Lopez estaba intratable, y asi todo no le pudo ganar.
The fact that Federer wins matches like this one makes him one the greatest player ever, Lopez was really on fire, every shot of him was inside the court, really playing his best tennis, but still not enough to beat roger.
a breathe of fresh air! two all-court players with one-handed backhands and a lot of variety at their best throwing at each other the best they got!! just epic stuff..... two-handed backhand domination is slowly killing the game
wow, that last backhand pass was just so awesome. Federer did predict where it was goin' but Lopez put that slice shot right on the outter part of the line and Federer passed it right by him on the run. INSANE
I love this Commentary.. especially when the guy says "Oh.. and thats how u break Roger federer" and when he says "he's got little more work than he would want" British accent rocks...
It was working well especially because he was hitting the topspin well. If you hit a great topspin backhand, your opponent has to respect that and stay back a little. That makes the slice harder to defend against positionally.
Never seen lopez hit 3 bachands as good as he did between 2.40 and 2.50, when he played henman at Wimbledon he barely made one all match. He would be right up there if his topsin was better, I love his slice though and his forehand and volleys are great. However how good was Federer when his back was against the wall the backhand pass he hits at the end is just stunning.
i was at this match. it was almost like Roger spotted him the 1st set to make it interesting, cause after that, he basically proceeded to dismantle him.
I remember this. Lopez played lights out tennis and Federer just couldn't do a thing to his pace and where he placed his shots. Everybody should learn to play this way.
creo que feliciano es uo de los jugadores zurdos mas 'elegantes' tecnicamente del circuito, lastimaque tiene una nevera en el pecho; arruga en los momentos mas dificiles
I love this Commentary.. especially when the guy says "Oh.. and thats how u break Roger federer" and when he says "he's got little more work than he would want" British accent rocks...
lopez threw everything but the kitchen sink at federer, but as you can see once rogers shoulders start warming and loosening up he has a a couple more gears he can go up.thats the difference between grand slam winners and the top 10-20 players who have never won and will probably never win a grand slam
Tennischick171, it is true, the problem with Lopez is that he doesn't know how how to behave on court. He still needs to learn a lot from Federer and Nadal in how to be a gentleman. I am not sure if he has the mental potential of a champion.
Lopez does have all the potential in the world, and he frustrates me so. I just feel like he's not dedicated enough to be great. And, he definitely needs more power on the backhand. He is my fave player along with Djokovich! There's a guy working hard for what he wants!!
I think lopez has all the potential in the world. All he had to do is get back in there. I think he can get a bunch of titles under his belt. He is by far my favorite spanish player.
agree about the lack of power in the Lopez backhand. He has a brilliant touch but his backhand is among the weakest while looking at his very solid ranking and his capability competing with the best. I actually cant remember him hitting a backhand winner against anyone recently. Its a shame, maybe he should change in into a two-handed, because Lopez surely is among the most talented players on the tour. Easily a top 10 player among talent, i only wish him to find a better coach to win a major!

omg after watching this vid a couple of times,
i did 2 of those backhand passes in this set i played today which friggin won me the set. they were exactly the same as federers shots cuz i watched the video so much!!
...doesn't he have the new equipment as well? what makes you think he's so special in this area? he won't be able to win any majors as long as federer is on the other side of his court my man. sorry, but that's reality.
The consensus is that the new strings and slower courts (esp. at Wimbledon) favor the returner. The returner has a better shot of getting his racket on the serve, and then doing something useful with it.
OTOH, Sampras contends that serve and volley can still work, you just have to use the new rackets to get outrageous spin on the serve and approach shots.
These first two sets it looked like Lopez was channeling Sampras :)
Agreed and Sampras has proven it by beating Fed in an exhibition recently. It throws Fed off his game when he cannot get a rhythym. The volleys and athleticism reminded me of Rafter more than Sampras, but the serve was looking like Pete. Sadly, the mental toughness was definitely LOPEZ. The new equipment has made the baseliner's shots much more controlled and powerful. How does that help the volleyer? Still, PETE BEAT ROGER. End of story. It can work.
OH MY GOD!!! Did you see that volley Lopez pulled off on the backhand in the first point of the vid??? LOPEZ WILL BE A MAJOR CHAMPION! IT IS COMING and I am not just saying that because I am a hansdsome, left-handed serve and volleyer DANGIT... LOL!!!
Lopez is CLEARLY the best serve and volley player in tennis. If he can find the mental toughness to stick to that style of play despite the passes, he will win a major. For those who do not believe, remember that Rafter did not win a major until his late twenties and would have won another had he not retired. If Lopez dedicates himself to serve and volley HE WILL WIN WIMBLEDON OR THE US OPEN. He is already a better ATHLETE than any top player. Remember ANDRES GOMEZ? I called that one too.
