With all honesty, I think those "extremists" in the region emerged because people there perceive a continuous meddling by foreign powers into their affairs. I think this whole extremist type of people will disappear as soon as the West pulls away from "budding into their business" - namely land, culture, and resources. But I think we got to a point of no return (the West being forever hated) the second the West created Israel ~60 years ago clearly against the will of the region and its natives.

@Pepper6464 'Proliferating' doesn't mean what you think it means. You can blame colonization in the 20th century, god knows it was bad, but the region had its problems well before then. Islam didn't help with its lurch towards anti-intellectualism in the 12th century, which was followed by the Mongol invasion (13th-14th century) and the Ottomann empire (1533-1918). You can't blame the British for all of that.

And we relinquished our empire (along with its many benefits- British laws weren't always worse than preceding ones) comparatively easily compared to countries such as Portugal and France. Leaders are always arseholes, but don't label an entire nation like that, or generalise about a subject as manifold as the empire. As a concept, it's wrong, but people tend to simplify and you are displaying that narrow attitude.

The class system separates people into social groups, putting an us vs them mentality when we are all the same. The tax system is based on the class system. It would be only fair if the rich paid a fair percentage of their wealth to society, but they don't, ie the bank bailouts at the expense of those on the lower ladder.
