I don't know. I have read a great deal about this case and the only thing I heard is he said that, in the event of his disappearence, the doors would automatically open after a certain time. But the investigators who looked at the cellar found out that was a lie.
Fritzl does not seem like the type to give one whit about his captives, even to protect them from starvation in the event of his death. He seems totally selfish.

This is a horrible story. Its hard to imagine whats worse. Elisabeth who was imprisoned and raped by her own father. The three children also imprisoned who knew the circumstances. The children above who had no idea that their granfather was their father and their mother and unknown siblings were beneth them, or the grandmother now knowing what her husband did. It's such an amazingly horrible story.
