The circle was laid out with a stick and a string :) 8' diameter with the outer edge of the wood on the circle. A 10' stick or pole is put in the center and marked at 80% of the heighth of the pole. When the wood shrinks as it is drying, when the wood reaches the mark (20% of the wood moisture is gone) the wood is dry and ready to burn.
@brycro You fill the center with odd wood pieces stacked vertically. When the air hits the circular stack of wood, it will flow through the pile (chimney effect). Save some thinner 'bark out' pieces for the roof to shed water. This method of stacking will dry the wood many months faster than a conventional woodpile.
I got the wood for free as a neighbor took a large maple down. It was about 3 cords worth. Decorating is an option, as the pile is artistic as is.
