  • the only nice thing for me is his snare sound.

  • lmao these guys are fucking douche bags. Give it up already. The only thing these guys are experts at is how to suck ass at drums.

  • What a stupid fucking video

  • Purdie - King of Feel

    expertvilliage - wannabes !

  • HE DRUNK!!!!!!!

  • Bernard Purdie is on SOME records.?!?!?!?!?!?!? Thats an understatement

  • learn how to tune your drums... then think about getting the pocket!

  • can expert village not afford mics?

  • Slowing down does not = pocket?

  • expertvillage? more like sucksalotvillage!

  • I read the title, then I saw 'expertvillage' and thought THIS is have to see.

  • He's just dragging it.

  • pocket is wat i put my stuff in

  • how can you title it 'How to be a Funk Drummer' and then tell me there is no explanation? You're wasting my time brahhhhh.....idiot.

  • That was awkward... hahahaha

  • this is the funniest shit Ive ever seen

  • CRAP

  • Hey man...u hav a slight misconception about "pocket drumming!" Ther is a DEFINITE xplanation/definition 2 pocket drumming! I'll giv it 2 u as a definition 1st-Then go on my channel and chek out the videos I've posted. POCKET DRUMMING: Categorized by a drummer who plays such solid, precise, timely, & consistent grooves that his/her playing creates a foundation from which ALL accompanying instrumentalist can cohesively convey the intent of the songwriter-U can reach me @ Da Pocket Drummer!

  • Eh, all pocket means is you play everything evenly and your accents are on the right places.. having good tone doesnt hurt either. Using push and pull method on hihats helps.. When you play sixteens, think of a train "chug a chug a" accent a little on the upbeat and drop the 2 and 4/backbeat in the same place every time, better to be late then early if you cant be right on it.

  • @gleventhal Learn push pull here, this drummer seems to be a pocket drummer in this video based on the one measure he plays.

  • The Drum Expert is playing the drums using the wrong end of the drum stick.

  • You can't teach to play in the pocket. It's a natural feel. Some drummers have it and some will never get it. But if you don't have it you can still make money and be famous with LOADS of practice - think Lars Ulrich from Metallica.

  • The pocket means that the groove is generally full and has little empty spaces. If you think what this guy is saying is stupid, you need a little more time behind the set.

  • Bio: Kevin Grossman is a young drummer who is studying music at the WeExceptAnyoneWithNoExceptionsAndNoTalentWhatsoeverInstitute of WeHonestlyDon'tKnow, in the University of WeHireStudentsJustSoOurBoardCanProfitOfTheGrantsGivenByTheGovernment.

  • "Always hate Expert Village" : Newest internet meme.

  • I'm a really shitty drummer, and this video sucks balls.

    IdiotVillage strikes again.

  • you know what's funny, that you think you're funky, but u aint. Funk is not a feel that you can learn, u gotta feel it! if u aint feelin' it u aint playin'

  • 1:12 of my life I'll never get back.....playing in the pocket, doesnt mean you keep your hands in them....but then again, maybe its a good place for yours.....

  • The pocket is just playing tight. Being consistantly out of the pocket means you might want to stop playing drums. Take up stitching or try your hand at making misinforming youtube videos like this one.

  • this video couldnt be more wrong if it tried. expert village my arse!

  • WTF

AssholeVillage he thinks that he got that down.

Is not just the paper is your heart in that groove fuckin idiot.

  • "The pocket" in my mind is simply playing what is needed in the music and grooving. Nothing more and nothing less.

  • seriously can they not afford mics?

  • god damnit.

  • do they drive around and listen for drummers jamming in their basement and ust knock on the door and ask them to record some videos of them explaining bullshit the wrong way

  • That is not what the pocket is.

The pocket is just being right on the beat, not behind. It's really just grooving real hard. Dennis Chambers is a great example. Go look him up.

  • @jcottr01 fool, why bring colour into this

  • EXPERT VILLAGE SUCKS SO MUCH ASS!

  • When a drummer plays a groove that "is very solid and with a great feel...", this is referred to informally as being "in the pocket"; when a drummer "maintains this feel for an extended period of time, never wavering, this is often referred to as a deep pocket."

  • I'm trying to convince myself that the whole expertvillage channel is just a bad joke. I'm worried these people might actual think they're informative...

  • so bored....

  • 0:19 WTH IS HE HITTING THE SNARE WITH THE BOTTOM OF THE STICK?????

  • @MrJuzsztin yes...lost of drummers do...

  • this is the only vid from you i don't like :(

  • TUNE YOUR DRUMS

  • expert village is so noob

  • THATS A LIE...YES PURDIE ITS NOT BEHIND....SURE THERE'S A TECNICAL TERM NO FILLS JUST PLAY STRAIGHT UNTIL IT JUST COOKS LIKE A SOUP...THATS THE HOW U DESCRIBE IT...

  • RYTHM FAIL!!

  • LOL, expretvillage...

how to be a funk drummer?you think 'bout it!

  • whiners, build a bridge!

  • "Expert village" or "Amateurs who don't know what they're doing will pointlessly try to give vague explanations of shit that everybody knows"...

  • expertvillage can suck my phat dick...no groove, no style, not interesting, and NOT HELPFUL...

  • Ludwig Supraphonic 402

  • ExpertVillage = Sucks

FreeDrumLessons = Really taught me how to drum!

Just check out FDL, its so much better!

  • ExpertVillage = Sucks

FreeDrumLessons = Really taught me how to drum!

Just check out FDL, its so much better!

  • ok now I nealy get what he wants to explain,,, you have to play 4 16s-triples: one time the base, then a gost note on the snare, and after that two times the base again (the last base you count one)(you play that between 4 and 1 so that you count 4re te 1(you can use that pattern as a fill to power up your groove)) but to slow that down sounds for most there would play a bad beginner but I think thats wrong...

  • It's comforting to know that no matter how crappy my drumming is I can always come to expert village for tips to get worse.

  • @secondthoughtsband hahahaaaa you´re so right

  • why are you all so rude...

  • @dnbjedi. Because beginners will end up learning wrong things when viewing these 'lessons' by the so called 'experts' of frikkin' 'expertvillage'. Their videos suck and should have never been published on Youtube in the first place. I personally think they're are fooling everybody 'cause their level of sucking is way beyond a parallel universe.

  • That was very helpful. And by helpful, I mean that sucked.

  • It's spelled Bernard Purdie. Also, there's a hole in your pocket.

  • there's a huge leak in your pocket dude

  • hahaha nice "pocket" fool... i don't think failing to have tempo means that's the pocket... I think what you're trying to define is referred to as second line... not straight 16th subdivision and not completely swung. next

  • isn't that just slowing down? behind the beat would be just be the same tempo, but hitting the snare a little bit behind

  • @nbeausejour

    Thats Shuffle bro.

  • It's nice how he "explains" the pocket by telling you some records to go listen to. I think next time I'll just google "best funk drummers" and go from there. Thanks again expertvillage!

  • Horrible sound quality, the only thing i learned in this video is that they make really tiny bass drums. What was that, a 12"?

  • You got to be kidding me. You're the "expert" in this video I'm assuming? Your drumming abilities are really an insult to us even amateurs if you call your self an expert.

  • red hoottt chili pepperrsssssss

  • kevin grossman, shut up.

  • why expertvillage is always so bad haha, he's no expert...

  • The sound quality makes me cringe!

  • i learned the wrong definition to expert, and bernard purdie is just as good as it gets,,

  • guys: david garibaldi... then again chris dave. all good drummers, but yeah i guess most funky ass drummers are black... this only to say: this whole conversation is missing it's fulcral point, and I cannot overemphasize this:

XPERT VILLAGE FKIN BLOWS OMFG SRSLY...

dont they even see their drum lesson reviews ffs?

90% of ppl watching drum videos are drummers, such as myself (and I'm quite the crappy drummer), and I can tell by far that this sucks indeed...

xpert village, I encourage you to die.

  • @joaonvf freakin awesome hahaha well said

  • first of all, i dont think that a white guy should have a video on how to be a funk drummer

  • it doesnt matter wether there black or white. your a dipshit. its like trying to say that only black people can play slap cos they started it when clearly flea is a very get good white slap player

  • who do u think flea was inspired by? bootsy collins, a black guy. its like a fact that black people have alot more rhythm than white people. that doesnt there isnt an occasional white person with awesome rhythm such as flea, or chad smith the drummer for the chili peppers.

  • It doesnt matter who he is inspired by, thats not the point. The point is white & black people can teach what ever they are good at. Your comment is a bit racist, its the same as me saying- its like a fact that black people have a lot more criminal records then white people. oh btw im not saying this person is good. expert village blows

  • what the fuck is this guy talking about. he has no talent on playing the instrument he is tryin to teach us. it is just another fucking messed up expertvillage video. FUCK YOU EXPVILLAGE ! 0/5

  • hahaha sweetest comment ive heard in a long time!

  • the pocket is behind the beat? lol

  • what a complete load of bollocks.

This guy doesn't know what the hell he is talking about.

In the pocket, is just that. Everyone playing with the right swing and feel, whilst being tight as can be.

Why are there so many ill informed videos on here?

  • the only thing you did was to slow down the exact same groove...thats not pocket,dude.. lol what a fucker..

  • are you drunk??

  • Just another crappy video from "expert" village, some1 should really ban it from the internet.

  • are all the vids on e how 2 stars or lower lol

  • This Guy has clearly no Clue, what He´s talking about!!! Expert-Village my Ass!

The "POCKET" simply is the Ability of a Drummer, to make every Band-Member feel at Home in a Beat from the First Bar to the Last Bar! Sense of Time, Clear Backbeats, Great Communication between the Musicians...THAT IS "POCKET DRUMMING"

Nothing else! There is no special "Pocket-Groove" or "Pocket Feel". If you are a good Drummer...youre always "in the Pocket"! For more Info....pm me

  • self delusion is a wonderfull thing, If I had to work with this plonker I would give up.

  • it does help to have tight timing to get into the pocket..

  • is that a joke?

  • sorry, i thought this was "Expert" village.

  • BOOOOO!

  • idiot.

  • WTF

AssholeVillage he thinks that he got that down.

Is not just the paper is your heart in that groove fuckin idiot.

  • Amen Brother!

  • I just want to slap his parents,,,,!!

  • this is comedy!!!! I love all the comments when I watched this video and he slowed the tempo. I was like huh???maybe I have been playing the pocket wrong all this time..lol This made my yioutube search worthwhile hee-hee... great laugh

play that funky music...........in the pocket...lol...lol

  • all this did was slow down the tempo...

pocket is just how good your damn timing makes the song feel.

a groove can land ahead, on, OR behind the beat.

the only way you can learn this shit is with your ears and with time and experience.

    expert noob-age.

  • Pocket is knowing the one. you can play whatever u want from a straight beat to over the bar line fills so long as your one is locked. If you don't know what the one is you got some reading to do.

  • The whole "expert" village is a total crap and I hope someone will ban it from the internet...

  • this dude is clueless

  • As Ludwag511 said. Playing in the pocket just means playing without a bunch of fills and/or rolls. You just play straight forward and dont try to make the drums a lead instrument. You might do a little roll when the band hits "the bridge". Funk music is simple and stripped down. Thats why its fun. No distortion or solos on the guitars just straight ahead rythem chords. And the bass always plays "on the one" The first beat of the four count. I dont know what the hell this guy is talking about.

  • That's not really accurate at all. Every style of music has a pocket, and it's not a matter of not playing fills, it's a matter of keeping the exact groove and feel of the song. Dennis Chambers is a great example in the funk/fusion jazz arena. Antonio Sanchez for straight ahead jazz. Gavin Harrison is a wonderful example for Rock drumming. All of these guys play tons of fills and do solos, and they keep their fills and solos in the pocket the whole time. Please don't spread misinformation.

  • idiot.

  • fidock drums

  • slowing down 10 bpm from where the time is is NOT called the pocket. Its called getting FIRED!

  • yess. wat the hell is he doin,

  • Pocket = 2 and 4

  • the pocket simply means playin the beat TIGHT without to many fills or anything, just relaxin and everything is tight and well put together.

  • Wrong, as explained by Steve Kirby playing "in the pocket" is achieved by playing ever so slightly behind the beat but at the correct tempo.

  • Comment removed

  • youtube or google "nobody beats the biz" by biz markie .. learn how to replay that basic drum pattern and you will have it down to a science.

  • it doesnt mean to play slower.. almost every BLACK style music uses this style except we dont call it pocket. listen to "D.C GOGO drummers" on youtube. its in a black persons soul to have this feeling. even 2 month old black babys dance on this rhythm.

  • oh so the pocket means slow down. thanks expert village!

  • @drum333cory

Haha but he said "there is no technical explanation"... Yours cant have been a technical explanation then, but it could have saved me watching this video :p

  • the best instructional drumming video I is ever seen..

  • THE POCKET:

    it means to play slower.

    which you fail at

  • Fail

  • i got a pocket full of breaks moron !!

  • Expert Village should get someone with decent recording equipment.

  • and someone whos not clueless either

  • Dude your just slowing down...

  • the fucking pocket is different for every drummer, lol..cant explain it, want good pocket? listen to TOTO or Dennis Chambers!!!

  • he doesn´t tap tha point...

    very very bad video

  • But he's white. . ?

  • I don't think he's very good, but you're still a dick

  • lol

  • his race is irrelevant ... this guy would suck if he were black , white , or plaid

  • This guy dunno what he is talking about! Playing 'in the pocket' is simply the drummer hitting the bass drum in unison with the bassists lower/root notes and the snare on the higher notes etc. Not a dictionary definition but hey...

For a good example of playing 'in the pocket' search for Flea and Chad Smith jamming, or just listen to The Greeting Song by the Chili Peppers.

  • that is one horrible sounding drum kit...ugh. nasty. not very good pocket explanation either...sorry dudes, but expert villiage is shwag.

  • What is the Pocket : "Theres no explanation for the pocket, you just...just...just..."

Fuck that shit, man.I bust my ass off all day working hard giving drum lessons and you call yourself a teacher with that kind of videos...its must be a joke.

The expertvillage videos should be taken off youtube for misleading and showing the opposite way to go to begginer and even advanced drummers.

    What the hell!

  • yeah....dragging the beat is not in the pocket it's actually out of the pocket. in the pocket is when you're not rushing or dragging...you're in the pocket.

  • agreed!

  • he can shit in his own pocket.

  • heehee

  • WTF???? Instead of headbutting a sidewalk....he should wipe his ass with 20 grit sandpaper......and quit drumming

  • you should probably just quit drumming, this is not what the pocket is at all, i will agree that it is hard to define the pocket, but dragging the beast is just wrong, headbutt a sidewalk

  • Great quick demonstration of the pocket, I got the idea and thats the main thing lol. 4 stars

  • i hope ur being sarcastic

  • Little bit... lol He atleast needs other band members to explain this... but like it is said it can't really be explained I guess

  • this was shit

  • Sorry, man. Dragging the rhythm is not playing in the pocket. You should probably just play against a metronome to illustrate it. Or, play to a funk piece straight, then in the pocket.

  • i hope he didnt get paid for this video

  • you know not the secret of the pocket white man.

  • Expertvillage - they may be from a village, but not necessarily experts. If they happen to be good ( rarely ) the audio sucks anyway. Some of their stuff just outright sucks ass. Sorry village people but it's pretty sad stuff a lot of the time.

  • The pocket? Two words: Dennis Chambers.

  • My god...

  • i disagree with most of these comments . although u cant describe a pocket i agree the beats do sit behind the main beat espacially on 2 and 4.

  • u are a fool. the definitive explanation of what a pocket is - is playing with a groove and awesome feel that is locked in with the rest of the band that makes people dance. what u play here is god awful!! it is not a pocket, not a beat, nothing. it is not even in good time. notice i didnt even say "perfect time". bcs its way too far from that. whats wrong with u? posting garbage like this on utube? this is horrible and a disgrace to drumming. spend some time studying black drummers. ull learn

  • its youtube, grow up.

  • ...... ummm?

  • As Victor Wooten would say, "You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket!" You sir clearly have neither.

  • hahahaha

  • HUH ?????

  • cheeseball

  • Pocket has nothing to do with paying behind the beat... what an ass this kid is, well meaning but he doesn't have a clue in his own playing but listen to Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd for an example of pocket playing.

  • what in the hell is this guy talking about?? the "pocket" is not a lick, its the complete opposite. Its staying in the main groove of a song usually just using the snare, hi hat and kick. Also it applies to every genere of music not just funk.

  • i like the fact that you work for EXPERTvillage yet you have no idea what your talking about....ive given your details to a company that works with AOL video, there called Ameteaur Village....check em out.

  • a pocket just means you emphasize the phrase of the groove, usually the backbeats, with everything you play. even when u fill whoever is listening can tell exactly where the beat is. theres no real exact definition. some people do lag the snare hit to create a better backbeat but thats not nessisary to create a pocket. want to know what i mean, search STEVE JORDAN

  • A good backbeat has to ring out with Stank' on it..lots of Stank'. That perfectly placed backbeat or backbone lets everybody know where that pocket is... i dont know what this cat is talking about... in this emotionless video...yes jordan kicks butt! i wanna play his snare..

  • u have no idea what ur talking about

  • agreed. i dont believe this guy when he says he knows what a pocket is. where do you find ur "experts" ????

  • Wow his kit really sux....

  • lol, wow man, u try to hard.

  • really not a good drummer are you mate. lol get out of here

  • Well done ell1010. You're powers of observation and wit are second to none. I'm sure you have amazing social skills also. Do you play drums? Where are YOUR videos?....

  • At first I thought "This looks like

John McCain giving me a lesson on street life"

but he did a good job explaning the pocket, yet not mentioning James Brown who is the first in my opinion who mastered it and incorporated it into popular music.

"Take It To The Bridge" = perfect pocket.

  • I'm sure this guy is an adequate drummer. He should have just jammed a groove to demonstrate it. BTW, John Mc Cain survived five years in a POW camp. Let's see any street thug do that. None of that internet and cable TV dem inmates are used to, yome sane?

  • John McCain? , what a looser. wouldnt even vote to get the country out of the financial crises. People like him almost destroyed the country. Thank God for Barack.

  • He wasn't happy with the proposal and for good reason. It was Barney Frank and Chris Dodd who touched off this powderkeg and Clinton and Carter filled it. lol

  • BTW, James Brown sang and had capes thrown over him, but Clyde Stubblefield provided the pocket.

  • thats not pocket, you just slowed down.

you have one of the worst funk feels ive ever heard... no groove or 'pocket'

you explained supposively what a 'pocket' was and then said that it cant be defined.

    that was a useless lesson.

  • lol true, but then once he realized "oh shit what am I trying to do" then he got real and gave a good explination and used some deep references like Gil Scott Heron who really didn't play much in the pocket but he is down with it.

  • since we're talking about funk, there is nothing funky about that fireplace back there.

  • haha

  • You will never be a funk drummer son

  • Isn't a pocket like a groove? And a good groove will push and pull the beat around gently.

  • Pocket means perfect time/feel. That's it.
