@WarrenAch Hmmmmm, okay. But then, why is it that intracranial bleeds or even small tumors can provoke seizures but applying pressure or probing the brain doesn't? Sorry, just picking at your brain =P Thanks for answering!
Also, what type of anesthesia do you use?? Some craniotomies are awake, no?
@dhamyanthi The blood in the brain is kind of normal...there's no intern hemoragy so it's not dangerous,if there is an excess the surgeon's assistant can remove it with suction. For anesthesia,it all depends on the case, since i'm not an Anesthesiologist i don't know lots of things about it.Yes some Craniotomy procedures are made awake, they usually put a liquid near your spinal cord,so you won't feel anything while being awake.Doing it awake costs less blood and the surgery is done more quickly.
@dhamyanthi It depends on the situation, some "'more simple"" cases are done while the patient is sleeping, while some complexe cases(i.e.the person can't stand general anesthesia because of heart failure rate.)Then it's done awake.
@WarrenAch 1) What exactly is "brain mapping?" How do you go about planning where to open up the patient? I mean, I've heard about pituitary tumors removed thorugh the nose which makes sense given their location...2) What's the craziest thing you've seen in neurosurgery?
Now, isn't this cyst caused by a parasite? Possibly echinococcosis infection? That is to crazy, I did not know that it would be like that. Or let alone look like an egg from an alien movie. crazy!
Because they have to make an incision at the right spot then sow the important tissues back together? I'm pretty sure inexperienced people will just kill the person by slicing everything until they see a cool bubble.
This is seriously the weirdest thing I think I have ever seen come out of a human body. It looks like an alien egg sack or something! Pus I can handle, but this weird, bluish ball that looks like a silicon breast implant? Nope, it's freaky. What's actually in the cyst? Is it cerebro-spinal fluid or what?
A tumor is begins with a body cell multiplying itself without the body controling it. The particular cell that started all this was blue. The color can also be caused by certain fluids in the tumor tissue.
Thats sick some paintients have to be surgered awake or the doctors couldnt tel him to move his hand to see if his ok so it must feel pretty bad to be sawed awake
huge props to the surgeons that have the balls to do that...they have the stomach to not throw up, much less remain calm with someone's life in their very delicate hands.
Kulan is right, many doctors will ask if the patient has a special request to be played during surgery. Many studies have shown even under anesthesia you may still be auditory aware of your environment.
it is a cyst.. a fluid encapsulated in a membranous structure.. this cyst is called hydatid cyst (look into wiki for more information)cause by infestation of Echinococcus granulosus.. a type of tape worm..

Question: Isn't there a risk of seizures when you perform neurosurgery?? I mean, doesn't all that poking around the brain irritate the cortex??
dhamyanthi 1 year ago
@dhamyanthi It's not instantly dangerous if you poke inside the brain, just don't cut anything out and the person will be fine.
The right dose of anesthesia is also a key factor on person's survival in surgery.
Yes there are risks, but surgeons make tests on the patient before doing surgery, which will decrease all forms of risks.
WarrenAch 1 year ago

WarrenAch 1 year ago
@WarrenAch Wow. I can't imagine being awake during a craniotomy. What's a "simple case."
dhamyanthi 1 year ago
@dhamyanthi A simple case is a case that doesn't require extreme efforts from the staff.Minor non cancerous tumours are simple cases.
