Hi, i just got a longhorn steer and i have no idea how to train him he is just a weanling so i have to wait a while before i can start him but he has had a blanket all over him even hanging off his head ( he was scared of birds and just about every thing that moved ) so he is not stranger to the blanket and he is halter broke but i have no idea how to train him to ride once he is older and tips would be great!! Thanks ! PS: I love mystery he is so cute !!!
@SnakesAndCupcakes The first time you get on him, I wouldn't spend too long on his back. Just get him used to someone on his back and getting off and on. It will feel different to him with the saddle on. With my steer I made a small pen, sat on him, and then gradually made the pen bigger the better he did and before too long he was riding in the whole pen. He's never bucked with me when I was training him. I don't ride with a saddle, my steer is hard to fit cuz he is so wide, so I ride bareback.
It looks like you have done a good job with him!!!! What is a good age to start riding a steer? We got a calf a couple weeks ago and I would love to train him to ride when he is old enough!!
It depends on how big he is, but most steers are started around 2 years. Premier Longhorns in Stillwater, OK, specializes in riding steers. If you are in the market for one I would go to them. Excellent steers. They also have a riding bull.
Narr soo cute, can you jump cows? Not like profesh obvs but I just really wanna turn up at a horse show where all the lil posh brats on their ponies are on a cow and do like a clear round on it haha! If you can't jump em screw it i'll just turn up on one anyway and watch!!! :P
We always used to ride cows when we were younger!! They were Holsteins and my grandpa said horses were "hay burners" like every dairy cow farmer. So the closest thing on the farm to horses were cows so we rode them. Our grandpa turned to beef cattle now but he kept our one riding cow Marcy, sadly she died last winter at the age of 10 :( But cute video!!!!!!
Interesting, just another low life that has no business being on youtube. If you can't be calm and accept other peoples ideas and common thoughts then get the fuck off the site.
wow, really, so you are telling me that i should accept the fact that you are a stupid cunt faced animal killer. well sorry no, i won't. go get a life
1. You're pathetic. 2. I have never killed an animal just eaten them. 3. Get over your self. and last but not least 4. Cry me a river and go drowned in it.
i like my steak medium rare...... i raise my own stock and i know what happens to them before they go to the buchers they have a good life..... they get good grain, they get good grass, they get fresh water. so shut up!
I think it's cool. Very unusual to see and would bet you and your buddy - the steer- will be the talk of the town. I'm getting 2 for our property/pet. Just think cows are sweet if raised young with humans, so we may try this when the age is right. Thank you for sharing.
What I'm curious about is how comfortable they are to ride, because they don't seem like they'd be (though I don't know anything about cows.) Also, are you actually using a bit? It's kinda hard to tell from the video.
Thanks, they are very comfortable to ride, at least mine is,I'd imagine some are and some are not..just like horses.Yup, I'm using a bit,you can see his mouth moving like he's chewing in the video, but it's kinda hard to see the bit. Maybe later this year, I will be sticking a nose bit in his nose.Since a bovines mouth isn't designed like a horse and they can't chew their cud very well, you can use a halter as a bridle, if they respect it,but my steer had a bit rough beginning and needs a nose bit.
I don't remember you showing us this video! But he is looking good!! you two are progressing so much! he is so cute!! He looks like he doesn't mind being ridden, actually enjoying it. Shelley
you know that's a cow?

Interesting how his markings and conformation came out. I was about to ask if he were a Dutch Belted.

@FilmerOfBobcats
I've had others ask if he was Dutch Belted or a Belted Galloway.

Yup.
kccmm1 3 years ago
looks like funn! Is he bony??? cause cows are usually more bony then some horses.
nikkyx2 3 years ago
He isn't bony at all. The more tamer cows are usually fatter than others who aren't as tame, dunno why, but they are. :)
kccmm1 3 years ago
Oh, I see. I really want to get one to ride! Are they hard to break?
tgeneaqha 3 years ago
No, they are pretty easy. Just takes time.
