Actually, it's mostly based on the Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel, a baroque composer. Which in turn is where parts of the soviet anthem derives form :P

Not sure where you are getting your information from. As far as I know "Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart" was released in 1978, whereas "Go West" was released in 1979.
