No remake or re-imagining can ever compete with this film. But you'd have to be a little less "mainstream" to appreciate all of the legends in this movie, and all the incredibly witty dialogue and innuendo. That's why it's a "cult" film. And positively brilliant.
I never seen the trailer of original movie before. It sure takes me back to 1989 when I first saw Hairspray on cable. I love the movie ever since then. I also saw the broadway musical twice. I say Devine, John Travolta, and Harvey Fierstein (who played Enda in the broadway musical) gave the best performance in playing Edna Trublad.
I have to see the old one, but I don't why everyone is dissing John Travolta in the new Hairspray--- Hillarious! I loved him in it and with Christopher Walkin. Also love the music in new one. Looks like the old one is grittier and might be more authentic, however.
this movie was and still is awsome it shouldve never have been remade in my opinon and yes i saw the remake not all of it only to the part when travolta sings and it bored me
i think the ratio is 50/50. even though i think this movie is suckish, and the new one's better. but some like classic more and some like the new one more. So it's 50/50!
I know. No disrespect to John Travolta - he's an awesome actor, who can do anything - but Divine was made for the dual role (you know he also played a male role - in a suit - of a commissioner, I think - in the original Hairspray.
Yeah. I know he's an awsome actor in a bunch of good films (like Grease, Saturday Night Fever, and Pulp Fiction), but the musical Hairspray, I told myself "I would want to see him in a comedy, but not as a female role."
My family and I are not a big fan of Hairspray but my mom and I prefer the old version because the music is 60s music. I like the songs in the new one, but they don't sound like sixties music, they sound like modern music.
I like this one more than the new one. In my opinion this one is waaaaaaaaaaay better. It has original music of the 60's not new music. I don't like the new one. They focused more on Tracey's mother. This one is 100 times better. They used the 60's music, which I think that matters the most. The new one has some horrible music, in my opinion, because it doesn't go for what the kids in baltimore were fighting for. Music had a lot to do w/what was happening in the 60's.
I don't understand how people hate the original but love the new one. You DO realize that without the original, there wouldn't have been a new one? >:(
yeah thats true. but people who were born later on probably think the newer version is more appealing. Ok i've never seen the original, but i reckon, from the look of it, i nowuld like it as much as i love the new one :)
Well, accually, the 2007 movie is not a remake. The 2007 movie was based off the musical that was based on the original movie. In the original, there was no singing. But, when they made the musical movie, John Waters (who directed the original movie) decided to write a sequel to it.

Me too. John Travolta tried, but there's no way he could match Divine as the mom!!!

I don't agree... I personally hate Divine! John did such a better job!

I also agree. I could see Divine as the mom. But, John Travolta, I couldn't see him in a dress as a female role.
