Like your set up but is the fish tank like ok for outdoor use? Like when its raining and there is mositure in the air. I have an outdoor approved low watt bulb set up.

@MotherLodeBeth Your set up sounds good. I never use that light anymore since I built the bigger coop. But as a fishtank light it is in a high moisture environment anyway. As long as it doesn't get a lot of water in the top of it, it will be ok.
hey one question how many chickens can a coop hold by every square foot? see im mexican and well tryin to put a chicken coop down here in mexico but i dont know how much i can put in a 12x20 chicken coop and the land is real humide so what material can i use any suggestion
I'll have to update my coops on my other channel RedneckResponder, I've got 12 hens now and get about 5 or 6 dozen a week. I sell them and can buy a months worth of food with just a week of eggs. The other 3 weeks are profit, about $60.00 a month. It's the only hobby I have that pays for its self.
You should see it now they have a 12x12 coup built on the side of the run and another 12x12 run built on the front of the new coup. I'll post a new video of it sometime.
I love the chicken tunnel and I will need somthing like that to let the chickens reach the garden area because I want them to help with bug control... Nice coop!!
A fan will help but make sure the birds cant peck at it. Do they have an area outside of the coop? If so make sure it has some shade. Mine made it thru 35 days over 95 degrees last year, they pant a lot and slow down lying eggs but seem fine. Always keep fresh water.
great vid!! i have chickens as well but im having a problem keeping the birds coop cool during the day any help??? I live in Utah and the birds are getting really hot and its hotter in the coop. It also has 2 vents in it.
With my coop I made sure that the front faced the prevailing wind direction for most of the year... put a window so that I can keep it open and the breeze keeps the coop cool even when its really hot... also I have a large sun roof in the coop that also keeps it warm but the window is enough to keep it from being really hot... but they do need to be alble to go out and water water water...
The fish tank light is for me to see and it hardly ever gets turned on. The chickens have a night light in the coop to ensure they get 14 hours of light a day so as to lay better and they like a little light at night to see anything happening in the coop. It makes them less nervous.
I like your coop and run setup, the tunnel is a cool idea. My request would be to slow the movement of the camera when you film, it's hard to focus on anything for me and it makes me dizzy! Not so much fast back and forth movement. Thanks for the clip!
I love the chicken tunnel! I have a coop in the barn that connects to an outdoor area, but if I want to expand (I think I will someday) the tunnel is a great idea! Thanks for sharing and good luck!
Yeah, really i kinda made it up as I went but I have a background in construction. I used alot of stuff I had lying around the only thing i bought was wire.
Why the light? Don't chickens need darkness too? Do you let the chickens in the yard to eat the bugs and weed seeds? Do you plan on eating any of the chickens?
The light in the run is just for looks. The chickens go into the coop at sunset every night where it is safe and secure. I have 7.5 watt light in the coop. Chickens lay better if they get about 14 hours of light a day.
Chickens don't need darkness and are less nervous with a little light all night. I let them out to rome the yard almost everyday but I have to watch them cause of stray dogs. I doubt I will eat any of these since they are our first ones and we named them, in the future I might get some meat birds.
I want to get some chickens in the future and I worry about becoming attached to them. Hopefully, if I know in the beginning I may eat them then it won't be so bad. Who knows though. Thanks for the info on the lights.
If you're really looking into it- The best beginner's book is by Gail Dammerow and called simply "raising chickens". It's everything you need to know. Look out though- raising chickens is addictive!
Thanks for the information I will look around for the book. I can imagine making food for yourself can be very addictive. I am looking more into natural organic chicken raising...which would be without the light. Even though the chickens lay more with an additional light it's not their natural cycle. I think all animals need natural sunlight and darkness. I also plan to pasture raise the chickens so they can forage for themselves part of the year.
Cool. My Aunt out in the county had some chickens when I was younger. She used to give us eggs all the time. We used to chase these suckers when we would visit, I guess we were a little mean.
I love the tunnel idea! But it is so low, how do you keep the snakes out?
ZiptieTheDog 3 weeks ago
@ZiptieTheDog Never had a problem with them. Just keep the eggs collected and if one comes by during the day my rooster kills them.

Why do you have the fish tank light in the run?
pepperanne14 9 months ago
@pepperanne14 Chickens like a little light at night and this one is low wattage. In the winter they need some light to help them lay better.
