this is such a wonderful contribution to Utyub! I am listening to it and watching it again and again, and am so delighted about it! tonight hope to get tickets to a concert performance of Cosi, in Tel Aviv, conducted by the great Avner Biron, and next week I am lecturing about the hidden complexity of the 'social' message of Cosi". thanks elias from eli.
I get chills every time I hear this excerpt. There is something very moving and capturing about this piece. I remember the first time I heard this, I think I scared a few fellow commuters, as I was flailing around quite excessively.
Without wishing to sound like a character in Peter Schaffer's play Amadeus I have to say this is delightful, allowing a fresh perspective from my loved if ancient Bohm, Schwarzkopf, Ludwig, Taddei on EMI. Thankyou for posting.
@elias12186 This one is actually my favorite Mozart opera. The beautiful, out-of-this-world music and ensemble writing more than makes up for the incredibly stupid plot!
@elias12186 one of these days some of you guys could spend some time explaining me what is so special in Mozart's music. I remind when I was little I liked his music, but since I've made acquaintance with more modern music (I mean from Beethoven on, specially from the early years of the 20th century), Mozart's music only seems like metrically and melodically perfect music. And it frequently annoys me :\
@LordMgls . there's nothing that could be said here that would improve on the statements by his peers and progeny. wagner, chopin, tchaikovsky, rossini, etc etc, take your pick really. if you don't appreciate no big deal. personally i've never seen the appeal in the works of verdi and puccini.
@badbit I can't even rank one over the other, in my eyes figaro is the most consist masterpiece ever written, while don giovanni at it's finest moments has no equal.
i think the first goes to DG, for its complete combination of metaphor, erotica, sarcasm, fable, terror, above all, fate, everything you need know about drama. i used to love Figaro the most, but recently, i rediscovered the sheer beauty of Cosi, Figaro is a heart-warming play, beautiful of course. but Cosi is very delicate and the most sensual beautiful one among the Da Ponte Triology, This is only an opinion of my personal taste. Thank you, our dear friend, Elias12186
@Josefk40 The overture is really a marvel...glad you like it. For my money, this is equivalent in quality to Don Giovanni and Nozze. Just my opinion. I believe its current lesser reputation is due in part to the fact that it was neglected in former times because of what was considered risque subject matter. Many thanks to elias12186 for making this incredible performance available here! I am very grateful!
MANY THANKS! Best live opera performance I've ever seen (and heard) on television! I wish this gets released on DVD sometime. Been trying to find it since '96.
Very good, lively start to this performance - can't wait to see the rest of it. It makes me sad to see Jerry Hadley though, especially on such good form. :(
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG i've been waiting forever to hear this- Carol Vaness is one of my Favs!!! I got to meet her last yr and she was THE nicest person..
I played Oboe in HS and in college!! I was lucky enough, even though I was not a Music Major to play 1st {and only} oboe for this opera!!!!!

Sometimes I think it even finer than the other two operas! The music is certainly the best of the three.

I agree with elias12186 that this is a great opera. So many spine tingling moments
in Mozart, but in the overture, from 0:19-31. Wow.

the playfulness at 1:26 to 1:30 makes me smile so muchh.. Mozart = best opera writer everr

Maestro Levine isn't a great conductor for symphonies and other orchestral works.
But he is one of the greatest opera conductors after the WWII.
His MET sound is colorful & dramatic.
I can't believe he wasn't chosen as a music director of the Wiener Staatsoper in 2002.

Its the 3rd best Mozart opera! Which makes it the 3rd best opera ever written!

Sure; the opera is wonderful but the performance was not so great, except some parts

@elias12186 which of his opera rank the first and second?

@dlwangxiaohu
1) Figaro
2) Don G.

@elias12186 I would reverse that order, but close enough.

@elias12186 Skip all the tenor passages in Don G. and the order is reversed, though ;)

Where does Flute figure in your list? I personally place Cosi behind Flute, (and also behind Clemenza and Idomeneo) still like it, though.

@elias12186 il barbier or le nozze?
kipkerriesoep 2 weeks ago
@elias12186 I must say I prefer the Magic Flute. So my ranking would be:
1. The Magic Flute
2. Cosi fan tutte
3. Don Giovanni
4. Figaro's Wedding
Well, that's how I think, but of course, they are all great and can't actually be compared!
