The rule is, as long as you are moving towards the goalie, and if you move backwards (towards center ice) then it ends. I have never saw anything preventing you from turning around or skating backwards as long as you continue your moving motion towards the goalie.

Ok lets say thet the goalie is at the East end of the ice and the shooter start at the West side, as long as the shooter keeps moving east without stopping in one spot for too long or without moving back west, it does not matter if your back is to the goalie or not (at least for that short of time,Ii don't know about skating the whole way backwards).
