Thank so much for this video! I'm a new knitter and I want to make the Rikke Hat from Ravelry.....It calls for this cast on....this is the easiest video to understand!! Others were saying go thru the bottom X..What????????? Yours is super easy!!!
Thank you so much for putting your hands in front of a black drop. It makes everything so much clearer. Those of us that don't have a LYS nearby or the opportunity for quality instruction are more grateful than you can know.
Brilliant! I've been knitting casually for several decades, but German twist is new to me. I love the way you explain this, and I love the way you demonstrate it step by step. I look forward to watching your other videos.
I also watched a bunch of other videos in total confusion until I saw this one. You broke it down perfectly and actually explained what has happening with the yarn. It's easy to get lost in all the fancy hand gestures. Thank you!
I just started learning to make socks, wouldn't this cast on make the edge more bulkier? I'm up to the heel part of my socks, but now I have to go find a video to do the heels and the toes, but I think doing toe up socks might be easier in the end, but I find it so interesting that there are so many ways to cast on!
If I did a German cast on for ribbing on sweaters, do you think the edging will hold it's shape better, or would it be too stretchy? Thanks so much ~ Dora :)
This is a wonderful cast-on for socks, it makes the edge slightly thicker (not a problem). It would also be a good cast-on for sweaters, giving a more defined cast-on edge with somewhat less stretch than long-tail cast-on. Yes, there are many cast-ons, all with their own special qualities: see my Knitting Essentials DVDs for more on this.
You can knit socks either way, up or down: do what you find most comfortable! See my book Cool Socks Warm Feet for the many ways to knit a sock.

I found this cast on to be very interesting, I like the fact that it gives it a thicker look.
Your explanation is right on! Thank you so much, I think this will work for me.
