@napischu I don't think you'd be able to. A huge part of keeping a bike up is in inertia. I think it would be like balancing a bike that isn't moving.
When are they going to pull this off with running? I really need to couple this technology with 3d goggles or 3d contact lens displays, and somehow a way to emulate something like Mirror's Edge? Like how does one simulate a pull-up? Maybe a full-bodied suit that has joint locks n stuff... but what about elevation? Maybe the treadmill can move up and down. Gah, have to do all this before I die!
@theguyi26 with a big enuff room and some very complex robotics you could do it. for example a 2x4 beam represents an elevated ledge to grab and climb onto as you climb on it, it would lower back to the floor and since you cant see it in reality due to the 3-d visor it might be possible to create a sense illusion. but in that system you can really emulate everything, creating your own "Ready Room" if you will.
Well this is certainly an amazing solution to the holodeck problem. Seems we may actually see something like holodecks in our lifetimes. Course maybe just in theme-parks or arcades.
Still, normal walking involves momentum and the physics of an object in motion. So not sure how this would feel in use.
I'd love to see how this interacts with virtual reality! And what about multiplayer? Maybe link 2 separate floors interacting in the same virtual reality, like an online game? heh
I think this has far more useful applications than video games. Think of how well manipulative robots can be if the response time from the man walking to a computer receiving updated directional data is so good. You can essentially control a self-reloading tank on a battlefield w/o lag time. Precision firing & response with only a machine to lose in combat.
Now mind you, the video does evidence a half a sec lag time in responses sent/received. But I wouldn't be surprised if it could be improved.
@JGK150 The lag is intentional, with out it the person would not accelerate at all when they turn, which is extremely disorienting for a body accustomed to leaning in to accelerations to keep balance. They could get rid of it but than it would feel like walking on ice, and the driver would need a ton of practice to keep from face planting. The rate at which you can comfortably CHANGE speeds determines the size of the floor.
@Zebonka they also called it five years ago too, but then they made it happen. you called it five years ago, but then spent your time bitching about stuff on youtube. that's the difference.
Woah man seriously, it's not my fault if your tampon went in the wrong hole.
I was just saying - a multi-directional treadmill is an obvious solution to some of the problems of a VR simulation ... why it took so long for a video of it to show up is frankly beyond me.
Incredible. I can only begin to imagine the possibilities of this technology. I can see this being integrated into a single room of a house dedicated to gaming or even just for exercise.
Imagine taking a stroll across the great wall of China without leaving your house, or taking a tour of the Australian outback without worrying about getting lost or stranded.
This is the first step towards true virtual reality.
Does anyone know where the platform is coming from? I'm trying to imagine a conveyer belt of some sort, but I don't know how that would work in two dimensions (if I'm using that term correctly). Brilliant device!
sweet i can finally have that one room like in star trek i think it was called the hologram room or some thing i hope u know what i mean this will be awsome
Now special forces from every military branch can practice shooting targets tactically all day long without ever using logistics or spending money except on the electric bill.
I would have liked to see how the machine reacts to a person side stepping, or rather walking backwards. and if that all works, some advanced moves like running or leaping.
You could definitely set up some projection screens around that and put your location in for the camera location on pretty much any 3d map and have it respond to how far you walk in different directions/how far you walk. You guys already did all of the hard parts.
this is great. only problem i see right away though is what is the person wanted to walk in a straight path and turn their head to see something in another direction.
@Elimy88 That can easily be resolved by 2 separate apparatuses. One fixed to the torso or hips and one fixed to the head. The head would dictate direction of the camera and the torso would dictate direction of the player.
Sup Everyone All make this fast and simple i wont wasnt no one's time

@faruh123 a square does have more area to walk around with. plus this is a prototype, so they are making it easy to work with; if you think about it, it is easier to do computing when dealing with four-sided objects, than with a no sided object.
i thought about this one time (floor going against direction of movement for virtual reality headset),but even in my imagination seemed imposible.... amazing what science can achieve...
@iurak6868 It looks like the floor is controlled by the movement of the guy's helmet. Notice all those points sticking out of the guy's helmet? My guess those are for the camera to track.
Simple enough solution even if it does look silly. Wouldn't it make more sense just to make the floor touch sensitive? Hmmm.... But that would be more expensive, wouldn't it?
Combine this with that holographic technology out of Tokyo university, and we have ourselves a holodeck gentlemen... now we need phasers.... and bald captians.....
That is awesome! Imagine having that for some video games and a virtual reality head set. I wonder if it allows for running or if that's the next step they're working on.

to aide balance, the entire assembly could tilt.
To counteract or simulate the normal inertia created while walking, to make it feel more natural. You'll probably trip over less.
But tilting such a large apparatus is not easy feat.
