Listening through the Powers Of Ten album makes me shed a tear every time. What an immense force in the musical world. And seeing his interviews and reading about how much of a great man he was, makes me sad. Why do the greats have to be taken away. :'(

@Staplesz I remember reading that he used the stock pickups that came on that Charvel. On one of his REH videos he said he didn't like high output pickups.

Everybody comparing guitarists needs to relax and just respect all of these guitar gods for who they are. That's like comparing paintings or something, it's subjective and everyone likes different shit.
Did anyone else catch that perfect slide up the entire neck at 2:26-2:27? His extreme speed is hard enough to get, but his perfect dynamics just fuck my head up. If that was his one and only perfect slide, it would be something else... but no, he can pull those out of his ass in the middle of a improvisation. Gah Shawn, you make me eat shit again! That's some tasty shit, though...
Fuck it, here's my all-time five (for today): Hendrix, Shawn Lane, Django, Jimmy Page, Pete Cosey (listen to him on Miles Davis' Agharta, and Dark Magus).
Well, you can what you want with your . love/hate/adore list. Personally i scrapped that ages ago. Your find alot of players get better as they realease more or have a best album/ vice versa, so that love/hate/wank over bullocks is never fair. Just a like / dislike does the job.
I'm loving all the discussion caused by the comment by Kingding6, but I'm suprised nobody's mentioned Frank Marino, he isn't that technical but he's a badass. Also Mick Barr and Chris Arp are incredible, but I find their music very difficult to listen to sometimes.
@Kingding6 im ok with Lifeson being in that 2nd tier, u gotta respect ur heroes, but why would u put him and Gilbert OVER Petrucci and Vai? i mean dont get me wrong Gilbert is amazing but hes not exactly a virtuoso like Vai or Petrucci theyre all insane shredders but Gilbert is 99% hard rock and metal where Vai and Petrucci will delve into more fusion-y stuff
@Dethsquirrel As you can see I wrote this a year ago and my views have changed. I'm still keeping Lifeson ahead, just cause I love Rush. Right now, I think Gilbert is roughly equal to Vai musically, and Petrucci is a notch or two higher, mostly due to his stuff with LTE. Of course, all fantastic musicians!
all of you debating this don't even get it...shawn lane isn't even a guitarist HE IS A MUSICIAN and an amazingly talented one....we will all miss him and at the same time live within his huge shadow
i'm just totally tearing-up watching this, beautiful! Such a strong composition, and a little ol' Mac Classic running everything bar the superb drums it seems. =)
what is great about Shawn is that he is a musician that is a shread guitarist that isnt metal...I am a huge metalhead and its hard to keep playing the same boring sweeps and legato licks and this just inspires me so much RIP shawn
This is such an emotional piece of music. If you really listen to it indepth you will grasp the awesome parts of the song. Oh man 1:31 to 2:00 omg that is so sexy
one of the things I like about some of Shawn's songs is that he's not playing or soloing alot of times over distorted rhythm guitars...he plays and solos over keys, strings, bass, and horns, and it makes his smooth distortion very distinctive...Try it guys!
For me itsS Lane, Govan, and G. Howe, and a new cat named Steffen Schackinger. Then everyone else and I do really like them all,But those 4 are my favorite.
its funny we have the same guitar idols.. ahaha i guess you love that fusion .. although one thing that is not in your list who is one of my favorite is Gambale
@Kingding6 this is the top 10 hendrix mclaughlin holdsworth metheny beck satriani vai prince egberto paco you could throw scott henderson and george benson in there instead of prince and egberto, but prince gives you chills like no other, and egberto covers such a vast realm of guitar playing that is never mentioned, he's worth having on there. jimmy page is 11th. gilbert has no soul to speak of. that is all that counts. lifeson has no chance. govan is the best purely technical player today.
@Kingding6 I know that comment is hella old, and you might've heard this before, but I say you gotta throw EJ in with the top three haha. But I could be biased.
@Kingding6 I saw him at a clinic, so like I said it may be pretty biased for me to say haha. Although I felt like he did things that really should not possible in real life, my friends and I had never seen that side of him too often.
@Kingding6 i think govan has even surpassed lane. but lane did leave us too early. i love them both. good list but i disagree with lifeson. and just so everyone knows, ron thal is pretty much as good as govan. govan even claims ron thal is better. and hes by far the best tapper. hes creative and another vigier player like lane. check him out
@ShredFever92 Can't agree with you view that Govan has surpassed Lane, all opinion on that one. I just through lifeson in there caused i love Rush, obv hes nowhere near as technical as any of the other players listed. Thal is fantastic, but imo hes def not as good as Govan, GG may have said hes better just to be modest, Thal has said multiple times that GG is the most talented guitarist hes ever seen.
@ExtremeBogom I have absolutley no problem in conceding that putting holdsworth and Gilbert are obv not at the same leval. Holdsworth is clearly more advanced and that was a mistake. I write this 8 months ago, and my opinions have changed slightly.
@funnyguy1321 No not at all, my Shawn Lane experiance generally goes somthing akin to this: Watch video-get inspired-pick up guitar-find out I still suck-watch more shawn Lane.
@Kingding6 Ahah, that's exactly the same thing for me. I'm like "need inspiration" then I listen to Shawn Lane then say "yeahh i got lots of ideas ! " then I pick up the guitar then "wtf, why can"'t I put these ideas on my fretboard ??"
@Kingding6 I'd like to nominate Greg Howe for your 'Players so good that when you hear them you put down your guitar and cry for a good 10 minutes' section ;-) For anybody not familiar with him, take a listen to 'Stringed Sanity' and prepare to simultaneously cry and crap yourself in wonderment at one of the greatest solos ever. Wonderfully emotional and heart-felt player too, great groove, phrasing....everything.
@Kingding6 I wish people would stop putting players in niveaus such as you do. How many times does people need to know that all of these players are totally different artists?!
@Kingding6 i think you picked the best of the best. lane and govan. two different styles.
one soars with incredible speed and beauty. the other great knowledge and street smarts, taste and speed.
both convey emotion. shawn makes you want to cry with joy and amazement. guthrie makes you want to
laugh at his virtuosity. i thnk we can relate to guthrie because it's possible we could play like that some day. shawn was and is untouchable.yeah i know i hear them complaining already.
@Kingding6 and then you take a deep breath and listen again only to cry for another ten minutes and so on... :)
soulfulness , accuracy, passion, virtuosity, imagination, creativity, shawn made the guitar beg for mercy and for more at the same time. we all need heros to keep us driven and dreaming and he will remain an inspiration for generations.
The fact that shawn's music is not just guitar oriented is sweet as hell. I love guitar but sometimes other instruments sound better for a certain job. In other words, music comes before guitar, when it comes to his pieces.
i cant believe anyone would talk smack about shawn lane no one else has a perfect blend of emotion and technique like he does. Ive played guitar for 10 years now and have heard all the arguments sorry but hands down lane in my mind will always prevail as the best.
I mean, he covered a Weather Report song and played in a band with members of Shakti how much more diverse can you get?? I'm sorry but your just bias, and misinformed gigglebooster. So either listen to more of Shawn's vastly diverse music before judging, or just shut up and stop listening to him and got back to your Steve Vai bullshit.
I love Shawn lane dude don't get me wrong, but i reckon steve vai is also awesome, they all have different voices. If two people had the same voice then i would be in the position to chose the superior, but in this case the test is not fair because there are just too many variables..
Yeah, this gigglebooster guy is an ignorant douche. Shawn lane is known by most guitarists including buckethead and satriani as the apex of technical facility he could do it all, and in my opinion with way better feel than any other shred guitarist. The only reason he gets classed with those guys is because he uses that technique, but he also experimented with Hindu and Arabic scales and modes, also odd-time signatures none of those other shred guitarists do that.
Like myshawnlanevideos has even said himself, he gets lane covers sent to him all the time. Are you shawn Lane fanboys honestly trying to tell me that Lanes stuff would be harder to cover than any other guitarists work? You're all retarded, fernando myata would in my opinion be the hardest guitarist to cover, not because he has the most emotion or feel, but because he utilizes techniques that shawn never did and would take sheer guitar guitar mastery. seriously, does shawns cock taste that good?
And I would have to disaggree again. I also feel that speed is a factor that's good but not the most important one. Guthrie govan is amazing though but I would say that buckethead and even satriani are techinically better than Lane. As far as playing with soul and emotion though? Countless other guitarists can play with more feel than him.
You know that legato is hammer ons and pull offs right? that's where he was a freak, watch rusty cooley alt pick though or sweep, not that i like the guy but he does it much faster than Lane ever did. And Lanes stuff is not much harder than petruccis in general. The song acid rain from petrucci is harder than pretty much every Lane song I could think of playing.
yeah your're right that legato is basically hammer ons and pull offs... It is just that you make it sound like Lane's technique was no big deal and... that's what pisses people off ... because the guy really had amazing MUSICAL talent ... c'mon dude let's end this already... i don't really give a f*** about guys who can shred faster than Lane... Guthrie Govan is the only guy I listened to so far who can hold a candle to Lane's technique and musicality....
Really, you're definately just spamming here, either that or just insanely ignorant.
Please get your facts right before 'spamming' them here.
Your arguments about Buckethead tapping faster than Shawn, or Rusty sweeping faster than Shawn are ridiculous, because Shawn didn't ever focus either on those techniques, though he could do them, he decided early on to persue his own technique he invented instead (one note per string hammer-ons out of nowhere) to get his own sound.
I don't care which guitarists anyone preferrs to listen to, but what bugs me is that every so often, someone will come along spamming the vids of one guitarist, trying to give scientific explanations to why the fans are wrong to like guy A, because guy B is so much better at doing this or that.
Shawn may 'just happen' to be the fastest 'accurate' picker i've heard (without simply doing the 'spasmic arm vibration' technique), but all i care is that when he plays, it sounds nice in my ears.
You explained that very well WJ, people come up to me all the time and and tell me speed is not the only thing and that i listen to music because of it's technical difficulty but no i it sounds good to me i like a lot of music but Shawn's does it best for me.
people can talk about technique all day but i just like the way it sounds.
@lovekurt Hi Q... hope all is well!! :-D ...I'm not actualy sure which bit you are agreeing with, lol... because it's hard to tell exactly which post you are replying to with this new YouTube layout in the last few weeks, which i can't stand.
@MyShawnLaneVideos this is the reason why i dont upload video's of me playing as soon as i get better than one guy than i meet another on the internet who plays with insanely rediculous precision, there was a video of him play 19 notes a second, a rare breed of feeling and technicality combined, to bad more people didnt know him when he was alive...he's better than most of the more recognized musicians now in days.
@lovekurt i heard it was done to cut down on all the haters out there and the ensuing dialogue...i must admit I feel better about my fellow human reading top rated comments first. What does suck is not being able to see the ratings.
I agree with you. The wonderful thing about him is that he has perfected both technique and melodic ability, so he can choose when to do what. That is a freedom that few guitarists ever achieve, and that is what sets him apart from most of the other ones in his category I think.
The tremolo and use of bends are the most delicate parts of his playing, I think. It's where you can really see his personality shine. They are quite subtle, but reflect what a nice, gentle man he was.
So even though his faster licks are very impressive, I'm more facinated by the tiny details. He was incredible.
I'll give him that they both had really nice tones, and that May's was probably the better of the two, but Lane makes up for the tone with tons of dynamics that truly make his sound his own. May's guitar supplied most of his sound -- The wood he made his guitar with was 200 years old I believe.
shawn lane, yes he can shred but he doesnt shred blindly. A lot of my fellow friends thought he just a shredder, no way dude. He's a shredder with an attifude. His phrasing were not confined with boundaries, see how beautiful his pieces are, I wish his albums were more easier to get in my country. But hey no pain no gain. I hope i manage to play at least even in the little amount of his capability. Shawn Lane big fans for life.

@TheGerthax because I don't feel buckethead is in the same league as Govan and Lane

@proteoid I agree man, tbh there are so many players that derserve that title.

@Kingding6 I wish people would stop putting players in niveaus such as you do. How many times does people need to know that all of these players are totally different artists?!
TuneToNote24 11 months ago
@Kingding6 i think you picked the best of the best. lane and govan. two different styles.
one soars with incredible speed and beauty. the other great knowledge and street smarts, taste and speed.
both convey emotion. shawn makes you want to cry with joy and amazement. guthrie makes you want to
laugh at his virtuosity. i thnk we can relate to guthrie because it's possible we could play like that some day. shawn was and is untouchable.yeah i know i hear them complaining already.
gmasterg13 10 months ago
@Kingding6 and then you take a deep breath and listen again only to cry for another ten minutes and so on... :)
soulfulness , accuracy, passion, virtuosity, imagination, creativity, shawn made the guitar beg for mercy and for more at the same time. we all need heros to keep us driven and dreaming and he will remain an inspiration for generations.

Why all these stupid arguments??? I love Shawn Lane and Steve Vai, both are geniuses in their own right. Why not just enjoy?
wheresmaaki 2 years ago 2
The fact that shawn's music is not just guitar oriented is sweet as hell. I love guitar but sometimes other instruments sound better for a certain job. In other words, music comes before guitar, when it comes to his pieces.

Today i just descovered shawn lane this is now a great day. shawn is amazing the drummer is sick as well!!
TheYeasteatingwalrus 2 years ago 3
i cant believe anyone would talk smack about shawn lane no one else has a perfect blend of emotion and technique like he does. Ive played guitar for 10 years now and have heard all the arguments sorry but hands down lane in my mind will always prevail as the best.
sidious2275 2 years ago 2
I mean, he covered a Weather Report song and played in a band with members of Shakti how much more diverse can you get?? I'm sorry but your just bias, and misinformed gigglebooster. So either listen to more of Shawn's vastly diverse music before judging, or just shut up and stop listening to him and got back to your Steve Vai bullshit.
StringTheoryMusic409 2 years ago
I love Shawn lane dude don't get me wrong, but i reckon steve vai is also awesome, they all have different voices. If two people had the same voice then i would be in the position to chose the superior, but in this case the test is not fair because there are just too many variables..
mercilessfreak 2 years ago

It's silly to insult people for no reason.
Noone is insulting you for your musical preferences because theres nothing wrong with them.
Can't we all just get along?

Gigglebooster 2 years ago
yeah your're right that legato is basically hammer ons and pull offs... It is just that you make it sound like Lane's technique was no big deal and... that's what pisses people off ... because the guy really had amazing MUSICAL talent ... c'mon dude let's end this already... i don't really give a f*** about guys who can shred faster than Lane... Guthrie Govan is the only guy I listened to so far who can hold a candle to Lane's technique and musicality....
maurobeardy 2 years ago
@Gigglebooster
MyShawnLaneVideos 2 years ago
I don't care which guitarists anyone preferrs to listen to, but what bugs me is that every so often, someone will come along spamming the vids of one guitarist, trying to give scientific explanations to why the fans are wrong to like guy A, because guy B is so much better at doing this or that.
Shawn may 'just happen' to be the fastest 'accurate' picker i've heard (without simply doing the 'spasmic arm vibration' technique), but all i care is that when he plays, it sounds nice in my ears.
MyShawnLaneVideos 2 years ago 49
You explained that very well WJ, people come up to me all the time and and tell me speed is not the only thing and that i listen to music because of it's technical difficulty but no i it sounds good to me i like a lot of music but Shawn's does it best for me.
people can talk about technique all day but i just like the way it sounds.

I know its remarkable.Dont get me wrong I love being blown away with his"monster" technical ability but I actually much prefer his slow playing
1madaboutguitar 2 years ago 4
I agree with you. The wonderful thing about him is that he has perfected both technique and melodic ability, so he can choose when to do what. That is a freedom that few guitarists ever achieve, and that is what sets him apart from most of the other ones in his category I think.
AmundLauritzen 2 years ago 7
Much agreed
1madaboutguitar 2 years ago 2
The tremolo and use of bends are the most delicate parts of his playing, I think. It's where you can really see his personality shine. They are quite subtle, but reflect what a nice, gentle man he was.
So even though his faster licks are very impressive, I'm more facinated by the tiny details. He was incredible.
RIP.

for me:
1.Brian May
2.Shawn Lane
Vitas555Solos 2 years ago
Are you ok ? Brain May,,,, I guess you dont play guitar.Brain May is like a child compared to Lane.Shesh !
zappaelcrappa 2 years ago 2
I'll give him that they both had really nice tones, and that May's was probably the better of the two, but Lane makes up for the tone with tons of dynamics that truly make his sound his own. May's guitar supplied most of his sound -- The wood he made his guitar with was 200 years old I believe.
BrianGuitarShred 2 years ago
get out! really shit!
charvel2121 2 years ago
Yeah May had built his own guitar i believe not sure of the wood but MAY be your right :)
zappaelcrappa 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure it's really ancient within the 200 year time. It was from an old fireplace.

so youre saing that may's got better tone XD hes got the most amazing tone and on top of that the gratest fingers and heart in the world
ericssonro 2 years ago
May does have better tone I think but that's just my opinion. He can't touch Lane's playing.

I can't believe that's a solid-state amplifier. It's got the best guitar sound I've ever heard.

ya Shawn's stuff is hard to find in Canada to. id probably have to drive my ass to Toronto to find a used CD
ZeitGeistGlobal 2 years ago
shawn lane, yes he can shred but he doesnt shred blindly. Shawn Lane big fans for life.
thanemuzika 2 years ago
I know there's no such thing as 'the right notes' but Shawn just always seems to play them!

Know what you're saying, it's that which is most impressive, aside from his beautiful phrasing, the genius composing and incredible speed .
make every note count!
