  • And he does it fast so he doesn't have a chance to look at any of the others.

  • @mikef179 Check out Derren's The Devil's Picturebook. He explains this trick in detail.

You're wrong by the way =P

  • 1:35 As he spreads the cards the first time he points at the one he wants him to choose.

  • @mikef179 wrong

  • 'Shut up. FUCK OFF' Lol Stephen's vocabulary failed him a bit there

  • @MusicalBeds: This trick is called Smoke and it is explained in Browns book Pure Effect, and also on the internet

  • link: magic.secrets-explained[dot]com/derren-brown/smoke

  • @ZeMagicT

    Thats a cool site, thanks.

  • They probably had some hot buttsex after this.

  • @brogin OOooh hot but sex :P

  • SHUT UP,FUCK OFF

Derren: Thank you very much LOL

  • "Shut up. Fuck off."

D: I'll never look at LittleBigPlanet the same way again.

  • People should just enjoy the trick, instead of explaining it.

  • It is very entertaining to see them on screen together. I would like to see Derren Brown on QI. He is fast, witty, educated and his sceptical outlook should help him a great deal.

  • 6 people who doesn't smoke disliked it ^.^

  • how can anyone not love stephen fry?

  • Rigged Deck. Side 1: 8 cards, cycling, Side 2: All cards except the 8 cards from side 1. Determine which card (among 8) using probing questions. (In this video, either Brown got lucky or it was edited). Cigarette box contains a real cigarette and the 8 cards with ends burned.

  • Daaayyuuum, that was a fast switch. HE'S SO COOL :D

  • Two of my favorite englishman..... together at last.. :D

  • He explains this trick in Devils Picture Book, its a rigged deck with a rigged cigarrets case... Really cool trick if anyone really wants to know how its done il upload a video :D

  • @negvey yeah people will watch. I sure would like to know how its done.

  • @alexzracer2008 You're wish came true here is a video of how it's done

    /watch?v=Y6XFrrYs-dE

  • @negvey I tried this link, and it's just the same video of the trick happening. Can you post a video of how the trick is done?

  • @papagena1 Youtube took out the Video, he uses a deck where one side is showing one type of cards and the other shows the other side of card thats why he flips the deck...

  • @papagena1 It can be found in "The Devils Picture Book"

  • For any trick where the magician guesses a card that the subject picks, and then the card is missing, it is a forced pick. The impressive part is in HOW the subject gets forced to pick the card they did. They have the illusion of choice, but that is all it is. An illusion. How did Derren make him pick KD? I don't know, but it is a trick and nothing more, and Deren himself will not suggest otherwise. He is a master showman, and that is what's most important.

  • @dumbnetworks I don't see any problem....

  • @dumbnetworks and they're also both Faggots

  • I love stephen's reaction. Long live stephen fry the man is a champion.

  • Stephens reaction is priceless. XD

  • Does anyone know what kind of fan Derren uses at the conclusion of the trick, it looks like he pulls the cards up a little.

  • I cant quite see it well but it seems The first card in the pile (if that's how it's spelled) is a dimond and then he suggest the number three when talking to him, any more clues?

    ◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘

    ◘Att.Dpaz2009◘

    ◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘

  • @Dpaz2009 Im thinking the red table cloth aswell as saying "burn" with candles and cigarretes imply a red car aswell as stephens comment at the end

  • Right before the trick, Derren suggests the 3 of hearts (a red card) then he says don't pick the 3 of hearts. This suggested to Fry that he pick a red card but not a heart. At 1:28, Derren makes a diamond shape with his hands right in front of Fry's face. At 1:29 he makes a crown gesture. Also, they are sitting at a square or diamond shaped table.

  • @xxmike805xx

no its not the method.. but good thinking

  • @xxmike805xx gotta agree with this

  • Is it just me or does he say teenager "kings"?

Also @chrisreddie, that's spot on! thanks for explaining

  • @thykapow im pretty sure he says teenager and kings too

  • Darren is looking at Stephen in the very beggining like he wants to eat him with a spoon ;D

  • @stojadinovicp, that comment actually made me lol, "with a spoon" god that's hilarious. kudos!

  • @aJDfMDl: I please to aim ;)

  • And... even if we solve the mystery of when he switched the cigarette for the rolled-up card, how the hell did he know which card Stephen had chosen? And how did he happen to have that one rolled up into a cigarette? Did he prime him to choose the king of diamonds somehow?

  • ****SPOILER****

Tables are red diamonds. The subconcious mind picks up on the card that's not there. The Rolled up card never had to be switched in, because Fry was so distracted by the trick that he didn't notice that Brown was smoking a rolled card.

  • Watch 2:20. When the camera pans to the overhead shot and Derren starts to fan out the deck on the table, he drops the cigarette and pulls the rolled card from his pocket. But how the hell he knew it had to be the king of diamonds is beyond me.

  • does anyone know what the music in this video is? the Circus-kind-of trick

  • I usually don't like steven, but I must admit, "I just want to burn him at the stake and watch his witches heart bubble" made me lol

  • @andyf2280

I don't really think he's the best comedian, but he is one of the best human beings i've ever listened to.

  • @skyerune I find him a pompous bore.

He was however magnificent as General Melchett in BlackAdder, I do have to admit.

  • @andyf2280

I don't find him pompous, since he has the intelligence to pull of the overly enunciated and elaborate way of speaking, but I can understand why one would think that. I'm also familiar with much of his work, which, I think, helped me form my opinion.

  • @andyf2280 as "Lord Nelson" as well... *wipes eyes.. it's still funny

  • @andyf2280 Derren has that quote in his testimonials on his website. Right at the top.

  • he was truly throttled. rightfully so, awesome trick . Stephen and derren are so awesome!

  • 2:20 you see him dropping the cig and switching

  • spot on. nice catch, but wait where was the rolled-up-card-cigarette that he switched to?

  • @DonJusty Still a good switch

  • @DonJusty Sigh, u still don't get it eh? *facepalm* It's not about the trick itself, but about the "jouney". Telling a story. Even if u know the entire trick: it's amazing how he performs it.

  • wow now that's what I call sleight of hand

  • damn! I like the slight of hand where he switches the cigarettes! First time I've actually seen it happen.

  • This is the first time a prereorded card-trick has worked on me, and I'm flabbergasted! I've been a fan or Derren Brown for a few years, but never felt like the actual victim of his deception before. wow!

  • hehehe, he's smoking, smoking... oh, I'll just flick the ash off this ciga...and BAM! now he's smoking a card! Ridiculously awesome!

  • 1:03 - Derren is gorgeous.

  • I know how this trick is done. Wow, it is an AMAZING method. It is very smart.

  • AHAHAHhA

  • This effect is published in Derren Brown's book, Pure Effect, which is unfortunately out of print now.

  • Care to share it? :P

  • 2:18 watch his right hand.. he switches his cigarette with the card

  • I just noticed that. Thats great slight of hand

  • i never get these. i was thinking "5 of spade"

Darren would go bankrupt on me

  • I think it is harder to make it work on us whose mother language is not English

  • no,its not harder

  • not really. as long as you can understand simple english its enough for this trick.

  • I got King of Diamonds :)

  • @MrFlyingfrogs i actually guessed king of diamonds too but for some reason i thought it was black before darren showed it

  • meh... read up on NLP.. and look at all his other vids on here... after explaining the example of the 3 of hearts(.. he says "please DONT.. now go for the 3 of hearts".. emphasizing D.. Diamonds.... words of lighting up.. burning.. bright, red.. emphasizing the color red... ill let u find the rest :)

    ciao

  • "Watch his wicthesheart bubble":)

  • I forgot to mention Brown's warmup with the smoke. Another gesture before even finishing 'light up'. Just watch the video and if you don't understand what I'm going on about try and watch for yourself.

  • I'm not 100% sure but I'm quite strongly suggesting that he showed the King of diamonds after he pulled the deck out. It remained in the packet. He always threw in three hand gestures when talking about the 3 of hearts. Notice that the gesture was nothing like a 3 of hearts but rather his fingers suggested a large number, red and a crown on his head. These are used to recall the image already seen in the card pack before any choice is allowed.

  • ok...

    HOW??!!

  • Woody Allen was actually a good athlete. Apparently he was always first pick.

  • It's just a thought...Maybe the little talk he had with Stephen just before the trick prompted him as to which card he might choose (like a psychological thing, "Which card is going to strike this particular character first?") No idea how he got the card out of the pack, though. I wish I could do this trick!

  • I know the method. No pre-show is required.

  • I didn't mean a pre-show, I meant the talk that's featured in the clip. I don't know, Derren just had this small, satisfied smile on his face at 1:10, like he'd learned something from Stephen's remarks. But if it's not that, then what the hell is it???

  • The smile is not a significant indicator. The method is simple and could be performed by anyone (everything before the cigarette switch).

  • 2:19 I can't believe how slick the switch-off was between the cigarette and the card!

  • Whenever I see him or hear him speak I just want to hug him. I would love to meet him.

  • me too! (i hope we are talking about stephen fry) if i could choose to meet anyone in the world it would be him, closely followed by alan alda

  • Who? Stephen fry? While he was filming Stephen Fry in America he ate at a restaurant in Southern Utah where I was working. I was blessed with the good fortune to serve him drinks.

  • That is really astonishingly cool. I must admit to jealousy

  • hmm..true, because you didn't see it burning, else there would be smoke. and lol thanks :P

  • 1:42 he turns the deck 180 degrees, that's why the king of diamonds 'disappeared'.

  • The cards are spread but are fixed to have king of diamonds more prominent than others. Fry picks the prominent card.

Brown switches decks at 1:48 as he squirms. Fry distracted because of the staring eye to eye.

At 2:20 he ditches the lit cigarette for the card.

Multiple cards can be made prominent in the fanned deck, but it means you need to be more tricky with asking them what card it was. And you then need multiple decks to switch to depending on what they say.

  • wrong

any card can be seen,no prominent cards

    no deck switching

    its much more clever

  • lol you dont know a shit about this trick!

  • actually, he explained this in 'the derren brown lecture'. there was no king of diamonds. he used an nlp type suggestion to put the image of the KoD in his head and then proceeded. he uses this suggestion in the majority of things he does, in his book he also talks about false memories and why they make for such good effects in magic, which is shown here as fry is sure he saw that card

  • wtf are you talking about? that s just completely wrong

-he didnt explain this in his lecture

    -he doesn't use any suggestion

-he doesn't use suggestion ist the majority of things he does

    -fry did see the KoD

  • mind power deck - for all who want 2 perform it..

  • It is NOT brainwave

  • GUYS LOOK AT 2:20 you can see him throwing the cigg down and picking up the card (looking like a cigg). That's how he used the sleight of hand technique

  • he drops the real cigarette at 2:20 lol.. so smooth

  • Brilliant!Absolutely superb!

  • I do not get it, even when you are telling it, so it doesn´t really spoil it for me :-).

I love the compliment Mr. Fry gives to the magician on the end :-D, very decent, innit?!! :-)

  • great trick even better is i kno almost exactly how its done =) want to kno cause i will tell you.

first he tells him to pick a card "like" 3 of hearts and then puts right hand up the left hand up then taps the top of his head like a crown on a king also tells him to "burn'" it into his head which makes him want red then tells him of course to NOT pick the 3 of hearts there for sublimaly tell him not to pick any hearts when he sees the king of hearts he rejects it at as heart makes it a diamon

  • but what if it was interpreted like...what color are burnt things? Black. I agree with you about the crown though. It's hard to imagine something so subtle would have such an impact.

  • the force of colour and suit is partly due to the fact that all of the table clothes are red and diamond shape. everything in that room is there for a reason. the serviettes that are folded a specific way etc

  • he actually explains in detail himself how he does it in his book, and in his instruction videoes of card tricks.. think it was called the smoke trick or something..

  • Nope.

    Answer (in magician languange):

    Brainwave D. ;)

  • erm...sorry to spoil it for u..but u are completely wrong.

if u wana know hows its done gime a buzz :P

heres a hint, theres no mentalism at all in this trick.

he revealed it on the devils picture book

  • yeah , i watched that tutorial on the "devils picture book" , and that was more simple that i thought of.

  • haha yup...pretty genius huh?

some idiot flamed me sayin i ddnt know e method -.-

  • Yeah . some people think they know everything about card tricks. Most of the tricks he performs on that DVD/VHS looks simple but involves some sneaky moves

  • i couldnt agree more xD

  • haha i love stephen fry's reactions

  • look at darrens right hand at 2:19 he drops the real cigg and replaces it with a already burnt card...

  • He did something psychological indeed. I was thinking about the king of diamonds as well.

  • Is that the guy from V for Vendetta

  • Yes

  • i happen to know exactly how its done, as i perform this all the time,

all the comments I've seen so far are pretty off.

However, being a magician and not a fag that reveals tricks, dont ask me how its done.

derren brown is still one of my idols.

  • he explains it in one of his videos, it is an amazing trick

  • Comment removed

  • buy it? I already know how it is done.

  • Comment removed

  • Just by reading this , i can tell that u don't know how to do it , "being a magician" ??? It's not about magic at all, maybe the last part but not how he knew that was his card. There some other methods involved

  • Dude, not all of Derren Browns tricks are psychological, some of them do involve some magic

this one is a trick, theres nothing psychological about it.

  • Uhh, he guessed the card that was in Fry's mind, of course it was psychological. The only illusion was when he used sleight of hand trick to replace his cigarette with the rolled up card

  • most of derren browns tricks are psychological, i believe that, but this one isn't

i can honestly say it, because i perform this trick all the time.

i dont do a version of it, im positive i do the exact same trick.

theres a bit of editing in this vid too, without revealing too much.

  • how's it done?

  • watch at 2.18 derrens hand. at the top left of the screen you can see him drop the smoke and palm the card.

  • my opinion( and maybe i am wrong) is that the trick is more simple than putting cards in some sort of order: he takes out the a card and so when a man looks the spreaded deck, subconciously he thinks a card that he didn't find in the deck.of course he did not had the time to search look all this deck but i think his subsconcious found the missing card and traslated to his concious as the card he put in his mind.

  • i know how he did this. you don't need the deck of cards (it's a distraction; a prop). Burn him at a stake!!! LMAO haha. ahh gotta love the english lol.

  • Why bother to figure it out? It's a great effect, and Derren is one of the best cardmagicians I've ever seen.

    Just enjoy it!

  • Simple explanation. He spreads out the cards, putting the king of diamonds in the middle. When spread out, almost all cards seen are of black suit, and packed so close to each other, but there is only red one somewhere in the middle and nicely spread out from others. Of course, your mind will pick that up. Also notice that, when Derren spreads out the cards, he kind of makes the guy to find himself in a hurry to choose the card. So Basically the guy does not get enough time to choose.

  • thats not how its done

  • When the close-up of the deck is shown the Kh is not surrounded by black, the 6 surrounding cards are 3 black and 3 red. More than likely Darren had cued him to choose this card which is also why he would need a quick selection for the subconscious to have control. the diamond could be cued by the red diamond shaped tables and the fact that he made a supressing cue of hearts from his example. Not sure how he cued the K though, perhaps previous to the start of the clip.

  • i think stephen fry says it all and i wish people would also think like this..." i dont want to know how he does it "

thats the whole point of f.... entertainment..

  • can anybody tell in which point he did light up the card?

  • he lighted up a cigarette. At one point, when the camera was recording from above (2:21), he switched the cigarette to the card.

  • Could you please switch embedded on again? -I mean,if you don't mind? It's so much easier to share the joy then...

For the rest: I LOVE THIS. SERIOUSLY. LOVE THIS.

  • my guess...

when hes giving the example out of 3 of hearts. he does a diamond kinda shape with his hands. then points to his head and says "repeat it in your HEAD". so its gonna be a card with a head on it. not sure how he made him pick king though

  • 2:19 to 2:21 you see him drop the cig and get the card he had in his hand... still knew he was guna pick king of diamonds though

  • My brain can't deal with this video - two of my favourite people in the world in one video, brilliant :D

    xx

  • "I'll look away as you do it so I don't catch a glimpse at where you might be looKING"

  • hahahaha that might be a stretch.

  • this is the first time I've seen this trick performed and I'm so glad. However its not the first time I've heard of it, its a very old trick indeed. I have a news print that sells this trick for $.25 it was published 1934, I only have the one page of it as I riped it off the wall of an old home I bought a few years ago. It described the trick in detial, after searching for the company and failing I gave up trying to find anything more on this very unique trick, although I've figured it out...

  • care to share?

  • no but this trick is eplained in other videos... its actually a very old trick that isn't performed by many people but it is in fact much older than deren brown... still a great job on his part though

  • do you know what the trick is called?

  • unfortunately no. I first seen it in a very old news clipping... it described the trick to the letter... they wanted 25 cents for the trick... they had no phone number just a mailing address that was no longer valid. publish date was 1929... deren was the first person I actually seen perform it though...

  • ah,I see. well after doing some searching, it seems Derren Brown actually reveals the trick himself in one of his books.unfortunately it's like $300-400!

  • well, actually, this particular version of the trick is NOT older than Derren Brown. The version gtq is thinking of is called 'cigarette to card' or some varient thereof. Derren Brown introduced the mind reading element himself. I actually have that book you are talking about, and as someone who really wanted to know that trick myself I would be happy to share it with you if you message me. Only if you actually perform though, otherwise its just spoiling a good effect! :P

  • what book is it?

  • pure effect. dont get it unless ur really serious about it because it costs a fortune! most of it is advanced card tricks anyway so i wouldnt bother with it unless u are a competent card magician

  • thanks. i dont think ill get it. im no good

  • and when he slides the king of diamonds from the deck in to his sleeve, he tells Stephen " look at me" to draw his attention away from his hands. This is the most brilliant card trick I have ever seen. WOW

  • actually he does make that suggestion with his hand his making the diamonds shape with his hand , his emphasysing BIG 3, BIG heart, so his suggesting it should be red, big, not a heart, and he even points at his head when he says, imagine it in your head, his suggesting a crown, so you're brain MUST pick out the king of diamonds

  • whatch it very very carefully he changes the switches the cigarette for the card at 2.20 when the camera is filming them from above, the king of diamonds was actually up his sleeve, he quickly drops it into his hand from his sleeve, and he lights it probably while stephen fry is looking at the cards on the table looking for the king of diamonds, but we can't see it because the camera is not filming Derren at that momment.

  • you can see him switch the card for the cigertte at 2:02 mark, but how does he burn it ?

  • dude i saw that 2:02 card change too but the thing is 1)he has to guess King of diamond 2)take the diamond King from the deck so he does not see,and then change the cigarette.great trick

  • nope... try again (lol) its a very clever trick.

  • yes it is, Im not sure how he gets the king of diamonds out of the deck but he IS switching the cigarette for the card at 2.20 thats obvious you just need to look really carefully at his hand.

  • yes yes yes I know THAT but he doesn't get it out of the deck, unless hes changed the trick (which I don't think he has lol), ha ha hes misdirected everyone that watches this - see, all the timing, EVERY single word and action has been made for this trick... get his dvd, or read pure effect ;)

  • exactly, in fact it was also a high chance that somebody would have picked the queen of diamonds or jack of diamonds, he probably had those three cards pre-rolled into smokes before this trick even started.

  • okay - im sure you all know the ace of spades is at the top at the beginning? - watch the bit were he spreads all the cards out.

he didn't use suggestion, he used misdirection, he doesn't need to use suggestion.

and imagine if he did use suggestion and he got it wrong! he would have to get another person who is oh so clever and repeat it till it works.

  • he ficked the cigaret and it turned in to the card

  • THEEEE BEST TRICK I HAVE EVEEEERRR SEEEEN.absolutely mindblowing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You can see derren switch the cigarette and the card at the 2:20 mark

  • lol nice catch

  • Nicely spotted. That's some swift slighting.

  • two legends in one room. awesome, love this trick as well. I have it in one of derrens books but would never dream of ever performing it as i could not do it the just derren does.
