A powerful theme in the movie seems to be a sense of relief in the destruction of society. I used to have dreams that the world had 'ended' and I was moving through post apocalyptic style landscape, kind of like that Stephen King book about the plague. Those dreams always made me feel really positive, like the things that had held me back were gone, and later I discovered that dreams of the end of the world symbolise new beginnings.
i must not have paid attention to the very beginning because the final scene did not bring me to the opening scene.I found and article review that explained the movies end and tying into the opening scene.they both die ,not just the girl
Quote from Roger Ebert....."Edwards is brilliant at evoking the awe and beauty he has been building toward, and at last we fully realize the film's ambitious arc. I think the lesson may be: Life has its reasons. Motives are pretty universal. Monsters are in the eye of the beholder."
I was bored stiff until the end of this film, then when i seen those octopus mating or whatever they were doin,I was with that guy, amazed,in awe, what a soundtrack tho eh?
In a way I found the two charectors to be strangely nieve with their tourist style detachment to the dangerous aliens they were seeing. They seemed oblivious to the fact that as the wall couldn't keep them out of America, that meant that they aliens would inevitably spill over and then destroy society as we know it. Perhaps it was a movie about civilizations ultimate insignificance, or how nice it would be if the government, army and corporations just fucked off for a bit??
@fredericsnooks666 I see what you mean with there naive tourist detachment... I got that too. But in my opinion it just shows that there are different ways of seeing things, things are different for different people, situations etc.. irrespective of the outcome. Like if 2 people walk through a mine field 1 person is scared, the other oblivious.. They are both walking through a mine field the out come for both of them is the same regardless. Difference would be if the scared person decided not to
@fredericsnooks666 I wouldn't say they were naive, more in awe of the creatures. I never felt like America was at danger, or civilisation was doomed. Whenever I watch monsters it takes my breath away, to me it's just a film about the beauty and unrelenting power of life. It highlights how out of control we all really are, just passengers lucky to be here and how we should respect that. Not sure thats what gareth edwards wanted from it, but I love it for that reason.
@fredericsnooks666 i dont feel like it was a tourist style when they were looking at the "monsters." through out the whole movie the male character is focused on taking pictures and mentioned how he wanted to get a picture of a alive one. Instead of going for his camera at this scene he just stares in awe of the creatures. Thats why i dont think they were naive or touristy, they were just in awe of nature.
@NoufDogg :yeah, after all that, she dies!! I showed this film to a Latvian friend of mine, and he thought it was totally boring, just people wandering around talking shit. I said, "what about the emotional impact of realising that she dies at the end?" and he shrugged and said, "shit happens!" - go figure.......
@fredericsnooks666 I find it really disheartening when people don't "get it". This film has so many different underlying themes - watching the movie was a very profound experience for me. Unfortunately, people are more used to eye-candy substituting a plot and dialogue and they don't have to think so much. o_O
@fredericsnooks666 Oh bro... you make latvians look like total tards xD
Tho movie was great, I have seen it several times and somehow in the end " ..I feel like i could cry... but I don't know if it would be happy cry or sad cry. " And the music is so great damn... its numbing and amplyfieing emotion at same time. And two seconds after he asks " You practiced lauthing!?" I fell in love... She's so perfect.
@fredericsnooks666 I'm not sure that she died per se. She's unconscious but he leaves carrying her in his arms (presumably to escape the coming ordinance and/or to get her some help). What I'm saying is I don't think the scene establishes that she's actually dead. It's still a bitter ending, but I guess I like to see it with a bit of hope.
Right up until the last 10 minutes or so I wasn't that crazy about the film, thought it was very well made but that is was just covering ground that other films had done more succesfully.
The ending was breathtaking. Simply perfect. Made the whole thing for me.
If there more songs this beautiful and awe-inspiring,we wouldn't need nearly as many drugs.However,in this day and age we rarely hear or see such things,so it may still be advantageous to have those drugs on hand. ; }
This movies was so cool. The end, the scene shown with the two beings meeting, I think really showcases the meaning of the movie. If you've seen it then you'll know what I mean.
I like the movie not because of this stunning music but the combination is very good, this movie is not an action movie but its more a reflective movie, the humans versus all the other species on earth and the way we destroy the planet.
i think this film is not so good without Jon Hopkins' music.. Actually it's not good with music either but music feels me as if i'm in film.. i'm deeply impressed..
Best movie score Ive heard in a very long time. So melodic. I could listen to this all day.

Watched it literally just now, and was blown away. It was so good.
I was texting at the beginning so wasn't taking much notice, but still realised at the end it was them.
Honestly, I don't think a film has ever quite touched me like this one.
It was so real. The chemistry makes sense because theyre actually husband and wife, but the film makes you just connect to the characters so much.
So sad.

I wasn't until I watched it a second time that I realised it was Andy and Sam in the Humvee at the very start. And everyone just ignores him. Argh!
