...come to think of it. I remember sitting next to a kid on our airplane who had been doing charity work there. Oy, my memories failing me. But we seriously chatted for like the whole flight. He was from Ireland and was telling me stories about the work he and his group of friends were doing over their school break. I wonder if he was with your organization... Impossible to tell now, I suppose. Still, small world.

Its so wonderful to see people working hard and accomplishing so much.

I was only in Zambia for like three hours (we drove through to get to a little airport--though not the one you all flew into, I don't think) last year. But I have these really vivid mental images of that brief time; it was very unique from the other countries we visited (truth b told, even tho geographically close to each other--every country felt vastly different from the next).

Anyway, how could anyone thumbs down this?

@eidothea Please also consider, that sticking a camera in someones face who is not from your own culture could be counterproductive, especially considering in some tribes in parts of Africa there is a belief that taking a child's photo traps the child's soul inside of the camera. Many times the people are skiddish, so I would rather see a video like this, than anything else. Sure its nice, but you have to consider cultural stuff too....

@cpmower Yes, but really, if that was the case then Worldvision, as a reputable organisation, would have informed volunteers of the cultural particularities that they must be aware of and respect. Having now seen other Worldvision vlogs, I don't think that's the case. And even if it was, it seems as if there are locals who would be more than happy to be filmed and tell others of their lives.

Anyway, I'm not judging this video, I'm merely interested in finding out more.

@cpmower Aside from the skiddish thing, when some people there see cameras and all of that, they see $. I have been to Kenya, and Ethiopia with another organization, they advise us of this. Worldvision, which is just as big, if not bigger than who I went with, does the same I am sure. By Shawna sharing her thoughts/feelings and views on what happened I believe we get a better view through HER eyes. A video doesn't do it justice, you simply must SEE what she and her friends saw.

@cpmower It is simply a VLOG, not a documentary, or a highlight video. If you want to see that, there is PLENTY of those out there. Because a VLOG by it's sheer definition, is a video log, a "diary" so-to-speak about what she saw.

@Nanalew Please don't see it like that, and it isn't so much as judgement but rather thirst for knowledge and understanding on how development works on the ground. You have to bear in mind that your a lot of your audience haven't been to Africa. You are right there, right now and you can actually inspire others to be involve in something like that, if only you can just show us more. Please see this for what it is: constructive criticism.

People have the right to hate the US, and seeing that theyre not bombing our hospitals or govt buildings, theyre not an issue. Sure, there are problems in the US, but there is no perfect society. World Vision also donates school supplies to children in the US, and the majority of US can easily afford to sponsor a kid ($35). Starved kids are worth worrying about.
