  • We released an online Japanese Dictionary that should be extremely easy for people to use. Features conjugation of verbs and adjectives as well as example sentences. :) In case you want a free online solution. Check our channel for more info.

  • At 1:10, Koichi turns on the swagg and turns his hat around. ahaha (yes I am easily amused)

  • Koichi I think that's a bad suggestion. Even if buying an iphone costs less than an electronic dictionary, you still need a contract with a phone company in order to get online to reach the app store. In total it's much more expensive than just to spent once on a good "gadget".

  • @finapon haven't you heard of wifi? in any case, still a suggestion which needs a little help as android is a much better option than iphone in terms of price, and choice of hardware.

  • if you are on android, try JED. It's free!

  • KOICHI

Check out Kotoba! for the iDevice. It's free, offline and offers an expansive vocabulary for multiple languages. There polite, impolite, te forms etc. And the words can be read in multiple ways (romaji, hirigana +kanji, hiragana -kanji etc.). What I love the most (and haven't seen in other apps) is practice sentences that help to show how the word is used.

  • whats with the rabbit on the blines?

  • Kotoba! The Free Dictionary. It's an iPhone app.

  • What are the prices in normal money (aka British sterling)? :P

  • For you with Android, aedict (free) is my favorite Japanese dictionary.

  • cool brother. I'm in the market for a dictionary,but I just

ordered a ipod touch. So,I'am gonna check it out! arigato!

  • If you don't want to spend the money for that app, you should check out KOTOBA. It uses the JDict project and is free. It's a wonderful app that has been extremely helpful for me living in Japan.

Oh, yeah, and you don't need an internet connection for it either.

  • @PickMyBran I didn't notice this comment here. But yeah I prefer 'Kotoba' over 'Japanese'.

  • If you don't want to spend the money for that app, you should check out KOTOBA. It uses the JDict project and is free. It's a wonderful app that has been extremely helpful for me living in Japan.

  • Good tip!

However I'd like to remind people that If you're studying - or going to study - Japanese at a university level (which should be considered if you're serious about the language itself), in reading exams and so on, you are generally allowed to have an electronic Japanese - English dictionary with you, however NOT an iphone.

    Hope this helps some people!

  • I have a Casio ExWord, (so does the Japanese Exchange Student we host) and it has been invaluable. I use it probably 25 times a day on average, well worth the money considering I bought it a year ago. My husband has a Droid with a couple of different language apps and we are continually "battling" to see who has the better product. Over the past year, every time, the electronic dictionary had quicker more concise results, more slang, and more examples than any app we have tried on the Droid.

  • watch,dont fish and drive!

  • unicorn!!! :D

  • Not a bad piece of advice and the "Japanese" program is, for sure, a life-saver, but the problem with it is when you want to check meanings, readings, and so forth quickly. This definitely depends on what kind of situation you're in and what kind of information you're looking for from your dictionary.

If you're going to full-out jump on the Apple bandwagon as it were, try out their "Dictionary" program that comes installed on every OS. It's awesome for the super-quick definitions and sentences.

  • why can't I find this app on iTunes store? :(

  • aahahahha do you have an electronic dictionary in ya pocket or are you just happy to see me ? :D:D:D:D:D

  • I got the same shirt =D

My favorite one of the kitties is the one smoking o.o

  • there is also the kotoba app,

and it is free, and shows alot of meanings, and stuff

    i like it very well : D

dont know a word, search it upp!

  • What happened to your black & white voice? :D

  • I wholeheartedly agree with the whole ipod dictionary thing. That's probably one of the best 20 bucks(give or take) I've ever spent on something related to my Japanese learning experience.

  • is that a japanese electronic dictionary in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

  • @Fairytearz Probably not, since you can't fit it in your pocket.

  • is it me or did is ur hat keep changing directions

  • Very interesting. Thanks son

  • im using Japanese right niow! lol

    cool

  • Wait wait -- $200 - 400 USD = $3.50 Canadian? I LOVE MY COUNTRY! :P

  • @Kyasaesan Yeah you wish lol it would be more for you 0:0

  • AH! I have that hat!!! :D I feel like we should be BFF's now.

  • 'kotoba' is also a good app... plus its free. it gives you the kanji and grammatical uses of most verbs so i find it extremely helpful.

  • Get Kotoba! It's free and completely awesome. Like you can find kanji by adding radicals in different ways. And it gives sample sentences. It is AWASAUAM!!!

  • I see you've crossed over too -_-

    Haha, jk!

    Or....AM I?

  • did you pan the hat thing, Koichi? ^^

  • lol luvin the way your hat moves around your head

  • Personally, I use Kotoba! on my iPod. It's free, you don't need the internet, you can save words, etc.

  • I AM happy to see you! :O

  • Hello, may I ask wich website is mentioned at 0:45..I'm sorry but can't catch it :-(

    Thank you in advance

    Greetings from italy

  • @Elia84ITApz White Rabbit Press

  • I still have your postcard from June 9th, 2008! You are epic good sir. ^_~

  • Are you sure that there's no cheap, electronic ,Japanese-English/English-Japanese dictionary available in the U.S.? They sell Spanish-English/English-Spanish electronic dictionaries at the local Rite Aid store, and although, I don't remember the price, I'm sure that it's between $15.00 & $30.00.

  • yer koichi my advice wait for a bit before you goto 4.0 and if you do jailbreak use blackrain , i have found it the best and easiest one to use and( geohot has a beta of 4.0,) i'm so happy :D when the full active version come out also if you do jailbreak it and you want to upgrade it do restore then upgrade to make sure there is nothing left of the jailbreak ,great video

  • Golden advice and equally excellent dictionary dancing!

I picked up that Japanese APP for my iPhone, however I can't seem to find the option to write in Kanji with your finger. What am I missing?

    ...joshua

  • I don't think there is a "best" denshijisho. It is really up to the user on what they think is important and then find one that suits their needs.

I have tried alternatives such as the DS & itouch, but I found them too slow, I could find words in my paperback dict. faster than it takes to turn on the device, load the app & search for the words. I'd also like to mention that you also need to charge these devices regularly, however I'm still on my first set of batt. with my elect dict.

  • BUT....which one works better

  • Dood you're so resourceful! Great idea :D

  • I had that app when It first came out! It was like $30 when I bought it.

  • LMAO. Or add a unicorn horn to someones head.

  • コウイチの日本語が恋しいよ

  • Very good recommendation Sir,lol about the unicorn part XD

  • Oh! There's also this app called iKanji that´s really helpful when it comes to... Learning kanji! You can find the kanji you wish to learn and put them in groups where you can study them and quiz/test them.

Right now I don't remember how much it costs, but I think it's worth check out.

  • you might find a cheaper one on EBAY or craiglist.

but anyhow you can also get the LAST.FM app. if you go to their website, you can find lots of japanese music, add it to yoru profile.

and then listen to it on your ipod touch/iphone. over wifi/3g

  • WOW! koichi has iphone! ............... "is that a japanese electronic dictionary in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" <----kinda really creepy tho.. LOL

  • Dude wtf we have the same ikea computer chair :) which is actually not that weird but hey. Gotta say something remotely interesting... ok it wasn't really interesting.

  • I love that rabbit in the background!

  • Wait, Koichi, are you going to leave us hanging like that without:

    1) explaining what on earth is that pink rabbity thing hanging on your window (that is also quite weirdly cute, too)?

    2) showing us the shots of your flapping your hands while presenting the electronic dictionaries without the added images (thus letting us see your facial expression while doing that)?

I was expecting a big climax that reveals these at the end but... nothing :(

  • Nintendo DS owners should consider a "game" called 「漢字そのまま楽引き辞典」.

Either purchase a copy on eBay, or download a ROM for your flashcart.

It has outstanding example sentences, and you can draw in kanji that you are unable to read.

It's the best Japanese dictionary I've used by far.

  • Shit i just started working at costco as a food sampler DX

  • my mother in law had one of those electronic dictionaries. lol she would type the word in japanese and it would translate it in english. i wish i was back home in osaka......i miss those days.....

  • I have both apps and they are extremly helpful. Especially smart.fm it's my favorite :P

  • Hello Koichi, I have a small question to ask that hopefully you will get to. I am learning Japanese by myself and I am trying to figure out what programs I need to go from start to finish. Now I have the written language covered. I really need your opinion on what I can use to learn Japanese start to finish. I have a budget of 100$ at the moment. Do you know what programs I should use?

(I am planning on speaking fluent Japanese in 3-4 years, studying 4 hours per day, wish me luck)

  • @XenHSA There's a number of programs, a lot of them scams, but here's two that I enjoy. The first is Koichi's own TextFugu. Descent price and good info. Another I site I recommend you check out is All Japanese all the Time. The guy who runs that site was fluent in 18 months.

  • @shounenbat510 Thanks, I have been using Livemocha and random free sites. I will check out the AJATT site, but I have been there before. I had trouble navigating however because most of the site is him trying to prove himself ;P

  • I also use kotoba for iPod touch -- amazing FREE dictionary!

  • I use kotoba for iPhone, a huge dictionary, it was FREE!

  • MY FRIEND HAS THAT SHIRT! :DDD

    she ♥s kitties :3

  • Koichi, knows what he is talking about, Japanese is the best app for the iPhone, I wish I could have it on my computer.

  • nooo !! don't run me out of my job hire someone to translate :'(

  • Is there a droid version, for us apple (and att) haters ?

  • The magical hat of wonderrrr~

    What do you feed it?

  • OMG lol i was gonna mention the japanese app as soon as i clicked on the video but i see you are smart like me hahaha

  • the textfugu add is the only add i wont exit out of.....i'll click on it then exit out of it :P- why? because i like to support my online textbook :D

  • @fightingirishaholic it's luckily I don't have to pay for ads on my own video, then! :)

  • i agree that an iphone is the best as far as resources are concerned, but if you're actually using an iphone as a cellphone, mp3 and ALSO a dictionary (not for a word every 10 years, but using it everyday) then the battery won't last o.o at least...mine didn't, that's why i changed to a normal cellphone, an ipod touch for music AND an electronic dictionary XD

  • mhh I need a japanese dictonary mostly in japan. but this will be expensive XD! I cant use my iphone in japan or use the tmobile internet in japan...way to expencive. Ineed a offline-e-dictonary.... T^T

  • Hopefully you aren't being sponsored...but you have good reasons to choose it even if you are.

  • @caffisc I wish I was sponsored by Apple. That would be a fanboy's dream.

  • I bet you jailbroke your iphone/touch tofugu :P

  • @iconfusedchineseguy nah, I wanted to try iOS4, so haven't done it yet for this version

  • Comment removed

  • does your hat change troughout the video?? D:

  • @lotusgirl002 what? You must have crazy eyes!

  • @tofugu omfg it does change! i didn't even realize until i watched it the 2nd time :0

  • @lotusgirl002 yeah it does. i noticed that to. lol

  • @lotusgirl002 haha i never noticed that until i watched the video for the second time

  • This american dude is funny.. a bit of an otaku but funny

  • @souyana haha, if you knew me, you'd know I'm no otaku. Huge geek, sure. :)

  • @souyana its all good

  • I don't know how to speak japanese.....

  • I have an iPhone and that app. Wiiie!

  • How many times did you take your hat on and off and change it?? =O

  • I'm Canadian and I lold- i love your videos :D

  • @Meibatsu Can I trade you my dollars?

  • @tofugu You can :)

  • have u seen the "Human Japanese" app? if not, u shpould check it out, it's really something!:D i think i payed 8$ or something... xD

BTW, this is not a ad xD

  • I don't know, I still prefer my electronic dictionary XD. I got my dictionary for about 10,000 yen, and it works really well (although it has no writing area for kanji). Anyway, when I'm teaching English classes to my ESL students, it's a lot better to have an electronic dictionary available, rather than keeping a phone on the desk during class in case we need it XD.

  • Casio X-word is the way too go, for serious students. Some of my classmates had it something like that on their i phones. i app is good but not as good as a denshijisho.

  • Seattle Supersonics....

    FTW! :D

  • @Kojiro23muto Supersonics so sad :(

  • I bet you secretly made that app and work for apple...

  • shouldn't have to get an iPhone to get a "cheap" dictionary. Considering I'm in the midwest, AT&T has terrible service out here. I have a Droid and I don't want or need an iPhone. Not exactly an all-around solution for everyone. Or even most people.

  • chinese is better u could speak to 1.2b ppl around the world

  • @arfinho0213 Eh.

  • i just got a canon wordtank 823 for 18,000 yen on amazon.co.jp! i love it! it has a backlight, chinese, kanji recognition, english menu and all these other cool things that i have still yet to take advantage of. i was also able to get it delivered the same day. retail for it is about 45,000. so it's kind of a bargain if you have ever walked into a denki shop and seen what the other prices are like.

  • *cough* advertising for apple *cough*

  • @1bol1 *cough* die *cough*

  • I have an iphone and I agree that the Japanese app is pretty awesome <3

You didn't mention the Nintendo DS! For those that have it, there is a DS game people can by that is pretty nifty. It's about $50 and you can write kanji on it too! For those that don't want an itouch/iphone it's a good alternative.

  • @bunnyish I have that game! My Japanese Caoch right?

I actually got it for $10, because the owner at our EB games is weird, and when he doesn't like a game he sells them really cheap.

xD Love the game though <3

  • @ZetraGild Hmm sounds fun! Actually what I have isn't a game but is a program of an electronic dictionary. It's mostly sold in Japan but some specialty game stores in the US have it and you can get it online. It's called Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten.

  • @bunnyish ooh, you know what! I think I've heard of that one. It was a while ago, I think it was the first program I was looking into getting off Amazon until Japanese coach came out.

  • tofugu.....secretly sponsored by apple =p

  • @Danoftouni I wish! haha.

  • I have the same hoodie as you and I'm very glad I bought it now :3

  • well I would like to comment on that, for example if you study japanese you need an electronic dictionary, since you are not under any cirkumstances allowed to use a phone during exams , tests etc. besides that, a real electronic dictionary is a lot faster.. but hell for me its a luxeryproblem, i have both.. :3

  • Go Mariners!

  • I've noticed that most Japanese electronic dictionaries are geared for Japanese learning English so it's difficult to figure out how to use the dictionary to if you don't already read Japanese.

  • LOL, thanks!

  • This probably my ADD side but I couldn't help but notice his hat moving around and switching throughout the video.

  • Dude, where´s your panda hat? we miss it

  • I use 「KOTOBA」, it's free and it's veeeery useful, if you find this useful thumbs up!

  • The DS has a few softwares like this too.

  • I'm totally getting that app.

I didn't know it was there so thanks!

  • What about Rosseta Stone I get it for free so just asking

  • I have TONS of apps for learning whatever haha Smart.fm is awesome :D

  • Yeah now I can put more crap on my iphone! Hahahaha....thx Koichi!

  • Why does your hat always change direction everytime you switch slips :/

  • I've thought about getting a Touch, but the max size is 64g. Frankly, I use ipods more for actually music. Too bad there are no j-apps for ipod classic 160g :/

  • @rss313 Are u insane?! x_x

  • <3 - 2:57

  • I think you're hat changed position about 17 times in that video , I think you might even of had a different one on at one point.

  • Good point there koichi,

now I have an excuse to buy an iphone.

  • I use the 'Kotoba!' app for the Iphone/Ipod. It's very useful and gets updates pretty often. No full translation feature but you can search for phrases. Most words have examples in english and Japanese. I love using it, and I think it has really helped me.

If that didn't get you interested, it's free. :)

  • "Is that a Japanese electronic dictionary in your pocket or did you just happen to see me?"

I just happened to see you. Thought you should know.

  • @silverprincess0001 it's "or are you just happy to see me...." meaning.....your response indicates you have a boner.

  • @psych0tic855 You are correct, kind sir. Or you know, one that I can imagine, at least.

  • Thanks for the info Koichi always helpful!!

  • I really want to buy text fugu.

  • @1977kadafi haha, hell no. I think I won that in a UFO machine.

  • What about the Nintendo DS?

  • @ThatGuyFromYouTueb OH YEAH! Do you my Japanese coach game?

I would recommend that if it's just for small things, I love the mini games and stuff ><

  • @nmaster13 Yeah, I have that. Personally, I'd love to see some kind of language learning somehow integrated into something as epic as Final Fantasy ... that would be brilliant.

  • @ThatGuyFromYouTueb As far as the NDS goes... there aren't a lot of options. although "Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten" is good. Or I suppose you could get the "My Japanese Coach" :{ but it would make me feel like a newwwwwb. lol soz if that wasn't helpful...

  • @sinistertetsuo "My Japanese Coach" starts with a sort of placement test, and starts you at the appropriate level. :-)

  • @ThatGuyFromYouTueb Oh I know, I have used it... but I didn't like it too much. Lol I actually got a 100% on the placement test on it. Its pretty simple stuff, hence is why I no longer use it. :P

  • This is very helpfull! Thankiess <3

  • omg a ad for textfugu came up during your vid xD thats so cute...ah shameless advertisement how i love you

  • @HiFiEffect YouTube has this cool feature that lets you create overlays for your own videos, so you won't see it anywhere else ;)

  • @tofugu just out of curiousity what is that pink rabbit in the background. it like glows in the camera XD

  • @HiFiEffect The Nova Rabbit... mascot for one of the worst English teaching programs in Japan!

  • I agree with this. Anyone serious about learning languages on their own should own an ipod touch/ipad or some form of audio visual device where you can constantly review material with yourself.

  • Jisho.org :x

  • haqha i love how when you would start a new step you would change someting like your hat or how your chair is positioned

  • Yay! Mariners! DO A REVIEW ON IT!!?!!

  • Kotoba!

  • kotoba! wa sugoi ne!

  • 3:11 epic

  • Haha, nice! I also use the "Japanese" app. I really like it. It gives me really great definitions of each word...though I get kinda upset sometimes when I try to learn something that has been conjugated and it wont give me a definition. OH well xD

  • I dont agree, nintendo ds is better to learn japanese because there is some japanese dictionaries on the nds, also my japanese coach game for learning

Unlike the ipod you get to play real games, not some basic flash games like on ipod

  • Do u Live In The USA Or Japan?

  • wow that joke was really creepy, perverted, but at the same time LOL.

  • the hat... @_@

  • LOL i like how your hat keeps changing positions throughout the video hahahahaha!!!

  • I use my iphone mainly for japanese apps =D hehe yeah, I think electronic dictionaries are kind obsolete and pretty expensive!!!

  • I can tell this video was made after 1:00PM Est because you have iOS 4 on your phone or maybe you have the developer build running on that bad boy? You also used Canadian dollars as a reference so that means you live in Canada??? Its says in your YouTube profile that you live in United States?????!?!?!? Why do you switch hats in different takes!:!!!!"!"!!!!!?!?!?????????????????????????

  • @RoyaleCafe Why do you complain so much ? XD

  • Kotoba is a good dictionary app for iPod Touch/iPhone, and it's free. It's really simple and there aren't many features, but it gets the job done if you just need one word. And you don't need an internet connection for it!
