All I remember about this track was the number of people pouring out trying to beat the rush. Getting stepped on etc. I seem to recall the Sunday performance was better.
Shame Page was not at his best. It was noticeable.
page is wasted here excellent just like the live aid version funniest thing ive ever seen also check out eric clapton playing with goerge harrison on while my guitar gently weeps at the concert for bangledesh hes wasted aswell its funny
I was at knebworth festival it was a brill day, even though there was mistakes we love 'em because their have brought so much pleasure to our lives over the years x
You're all talking about Page and no one has noticed that Plant has changed the meaning of the song... It was supposed to be a song of hope, well, this version is a song of despair. He hates every word of it, but he has to sing it because it is their greatest hit. The forced smile at 3:43 is painful and that blank stare in his eyes at the end is so hopeless. He was supposed to be warm and cheerful, but now he's sarcastic. Artistically it's great and sincere, but it's painful too...
@miki03soimu Spot on,page said Plant would only sing it in rehearsehals if it was played as a fast reggae number!Plant says its a sanctimonious song.Plant or Page should do a proper documentary or Autobiography about zep in their heyday.
@sysrq120 Robert Plant saying Stairway is sanctimonious is kind of funny. Sometimes Robert is the epitome of sanctimony. If Frank Zappa can play this song with heart and emotion Robert can damn well sing it too. He can say all he wants but he was still wearing it. Do I sound partial?
Stairway to Heaven comes on and you slow dance real close with some sweet girl you just asked but don't really know.
As easy as a slow-dance may seam, you're so carefull to not "fall out of step". Nervous, you can't see anything but those sparkles of light from that glittering disco ball.
Eventually the music gets to you and you relax. You feel your partner pressing her head closer to your chest. Drums kick in, guitar wales away, time stands still.
@ademacl152 I was there as well - 18 and my life was about to change big style - never forget that day......Do you remember LZ promised another gig in Manchester at the end and when the Stage side screens showed the full moon as the band sang this !
I WAS THERE , STARTED THE DAY WITH CHAS AND DAVE AND ENDED WITH THIS. ONE OF THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE. ALSO KEITH RICHARDS RONNIE WOOD BEFORE LED ZEP .AMAZING WISH I WAS 17 AGAIN THEN
In 2007, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin reunited (along with John Bonham's son, Jason) for the Ahmet Ertegün Tribute Concert at The O2 Arena in London. The band was honoured with the "Best Live Act" prize for their one-off reunion at MOJO Awards 2008, where they were declared the "greatest rock and roll band of all time."
As it should have been! You have bands with songs, you have bands with personality, this band ROCKED! BEEN THERE SEEN IT!
@championofhardrock i think they didnt really see this a special song anymore and i can imagine that if the whole world playing your song 24/7 and you must play this song because it was populair you dont really make a great show about it anymore but if you look at achilles last stand sick again or whole lotta love that are truly perfect and epic versions of the song!
@bushokjew00t yea that's true i guess, you can see that the earlier versions are much better ;P and they didnt make music for commercial reasons anyway, thats why i like m.
@vdubmikey1 you thought it was good?? it seems most people feel otherwise, after over the hills a guy shouts "jiimmy you suck" and before trampled underfoot in a audience cource bootleg one person says "they're not very good are they" and another person says "no theyre not".
are you sure it was this concert and not the one a week before?
I will probably never tire of watching Plant at Knebworth. Not only did he look like a million bucks, but his showmanship had evolved by this point. Truly one of the greatest frontmen of rock & roll of all time.
@5:17 James Patrick Page looked like he could walk on water and raise the dead. This song embodies all that was Led Zeppelin. There were blues. There was rock. There was soul. And there was Zeppelin; the best musicians at what they did. People will always complain Bonzo's death was the end of Zeppelin. I don't think so. What makes THEM special is that they really were the best, period.......bar none!
people have to picking on jimmy here, so he was on heroin, anybody would be not bad on guitar but rush or miss notes. yeah he was addicted but he is still the same guy in the yardbirds, madison square garden, or earl's court. plus this is live, jimmy improvises a lot. in my opinion, jimmy will be the greatest guitarist forever. even when he was 25 or 60 or any age
@102ledzepfan dude you are right, he is the best guitarplayer in the world and the best riffmaker, i mean nobody ( or almost nobody ) is improvising for an audieance like this ones, i mean he is ALWAYS improvising a bit not even 1 solo is the same. just amazing, page is the best ever no doubt about it
@102ledzepfan With all due respect to Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton ( everyone's choices fro the best guitarists) and the Beatles and Rolling Stones ( both great bands) Led zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever and Page is way underrated as a guitarists ever
it was the end of a very long and crazy show, he was tired, shot, drunk etc. He rushed threw the entire song. Interesting solo to say the least, plus its not easy to play on the guitar. Either way, the first night ( the 4th) had the good solo, this is the 11th, which they were having problems with sound all night becuz they left the equipment out from the 4th. That being said, heres the excellent stairway from knebworth, much better solo and entire song youtube . com / watch?v=mpsHl7e36lw
what happened with jimmy page in this performance?, the guitar solo was horrible comparing with another stairway to heaven guitar solos, anyway he is one of the best
@PLACEBOgarbage ... (1) he was having issues with heroin at the time. (2) the sound guys suck here they should have been pummled by Peter Grant. (3) they were under-rehersed.
I hope you are joking, there is no way anyone can criticise Led Zeppelin as a group, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham . There are many guitarist and they all have there own sound, They all have a sound that is always present and to say Page is not good means that you just do not have a good ear for music.
I didnt say page is not goog...for me he is the best....but that doesent mean every s every solo is great...this is the worst....way to fast, no intresting licks, no finger control, too short (because he skipt difficult parts of his solo)....Jimi always tried to prevent the puplishment of this video-material, cause he is a perfectionist...
this without doubt, I was at both and I was totally blown away both times, by the way Sheer Heart Attack... I also saw Freddie, Brian, John and Roger live singing your name sake twice. Phew RIP Freddie We still miss you so much. xxx
@Diddilydeedot yes that is true, but man the performance of sheer heart attack at hammersmith odeon 1979 kicked fucking ass, so does this perfomance of stairway
FYI anyone who says Jimmy's a bad guitarist, you're looking at the wrong videos! He is so obviously stoned here. Only the Zeppelin fans don't give a sod because we love Jimmy. Everyone who disagrees, do yourselves a favour and watch Stairway from Earls Court in 1975 or Madison Square Garden in 1973 =)
@JimmyPageNikkiW13, i totally agree with you about Page, Plant, and Bonham but in my opinion the best keyboardist was Ray Manzarek and the best bassist was John Entwistle
@JimmyPageNikkiW13 Just lost alot of respect for yourself there, There is no way Noel Gallagher is better than plant, yeah he's a good singer, but he has nowhere near the Range, passion, volume and versatility Plant's voice has, Noel could only ever sing for the genre he does, Plant can do anythin from Rock to Classic
@rickheyes0 at thats moment but, im rediscovering Led Zeppelin cuz i recently fell in love with Oasis i know sad......but still there both amazing singers
does anyone know what the fuck "Stairway to Heaven" is supposed to be about? I read in "I'm With The Band" that "Stairway to Heaven" is about Pamela Des Barres...does anyone believe that?
@sjk6101983 I've read in various sources that "Stairway to Heaven" is supposed to be a veiled attack on materialism, sort of poking fun at the idea that you can't buy a "stairway" to heaven, and that money can't buy everything. I don't know if the band intended the song to be the monster hit that it was.
Yeah I was there.... But they did 2 gigs at Knebworth on two successive weeks. I assume they did this both weeks - is the other one on You Tube? That long ago I can't remember if this was the one I saw. Blew me away at the time, though.
His solo in this performance was not as memorable as the ones in MSG or at Earls Court, your right PLACEOBgarbage, but does it matter, it's not like you could do better.
@bfv102290 THAT IS TOTALLY TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jimmy page can kickvany guitarists ass, even if he's 2,000 years old or on heroin or both
This was the first "proper" gig I ever saw. I was 15. It totally blew my mind. Now, with 30 years of guitar playing behind me, I watch Page playing and think ....WTF?!
Hey would ya'll mind checkin out my videos? They are all original songs.Especially the song FEEL, itry to sound like Brian Johnson.PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS TY!!!!!!!!!!!!
i kinda know why they're playing dam fast.. try listening to this song every day and playing it.. when i first learned this on guitar, i quickly got tired of it after having many people ask me to play it..
you can all say what you want... good, bad, or indifferent , but i can say" I WAS THERE" and it was a great show from a great band and all 200,000 of us loved it
Why so fast?

does anyone know what the fuck "Stairway to Heaven" is supposed to be about? I read in "I'm With The Band" that "Stairway to Heaven" is about Pamela Des Barres...does anyone believe that?
sjk6101983 1 year ago
@sjk6101983 I've read in various sources that "Stairway to Heaven" is supposed to be a veiled attack on materialism, sort of poking fun at the idea that you can't buy a "stairway" to heaven, and that money can't buy everything. I don't know if the band intended the song to be the monster hit that it was.

Yeah I was there.... But they did 2 gigs at Knebworth on two successive weeks. I assume they did this both weeks - is the other one on You Tube? That long ago I can't remember if this was the one I saw. Blew me away at the time, though.
And yes - I am old.

@janquen the other one is on youtube and it is considerably better so thats prob the 1 you saw

His solo in this performance was not as memorable as the ones in MSG or at Earls Court, your right PLACEOBgarbage, but does it matter, it's not like you could do better.

This was the first "proper" gig I ever saw. I was 15. It totally blew my mind. Now, with 30 years of guitar playing behind me, I watch Page playing and think ....WTF?!

@xxFortunadoxx to be fair one of the 83 shows was better than this
Matthew9444 1 year ago
Hopefully you're not referring to the one with Clapton and Beck. Because that was tragically bad.
xxFortunadoxx 1 year ago
all the 83 ones had them but i felt the one in RAH was better than this once the solo really got started
