  • because its the invisible jiu-jitsu

  • I studied Karate, Boxing, Judo, and Helio Gracie Jiujitsu and I can tell you that my effectiveness in real combative situations starts with my boxing, judo, and karate-do but rarely ends with them, unless I attack, It's 25% of the time finishing that way, and of that, much is by a chance strike, which leaves Gracie Jiujitsu with a 75% ability to finish the fight. How many fights have you finished and how? If it doesn't have a weight to it then how can it be heavy?

  • Awesome! This is one of the best Gracie Videos I've ever seen. Hope to see more!

  • @MasterNinja1990. Your wrong. Self defense BJJ incorporates alot of strikes. Sport BJJ doesnt. Watch the old BJJ Self defense videos with Helio, Carlos, Rickson, Royler, Royce etc. Know your topic before sounding like an idiot.

  • This is so bullshit. From the beginning BBJ did not even have strikes or kicks, or any other self defense moves for that mather. When BBJ started to become popular in the late 90tis it was all and only sport gay huging on the ground! Its not before now when the real martial arts started to point out that BBj was no real self defense art, as they put those techniques in there. So dam low!!

  • @MasterNinja1990 Wow your an idiot, you cant even type BJJ right, Grappling is very effective for the street, the strikes have been in there and thats why its called Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the sport version, and this video is older than you or those "real martial artists" you speak of, and what martial artists you speaking of? the ones that challenged them daily and lost or the ones in the first UFC with no rules and no gloves? yeah do your research before you talk

  • Thats comes of as so funny to me. I have been practising martial arts for 10years, almost every day. Under that time I have been in 12 diffrent martial arts styles. I have been in real self defense situations many times before. One time even against an attacker armed with a knife. I teach self defense to both women and men, young and old. So my man I think I know what I am talking about.

  • And also, yes there are some few grapple techniques that can be effective in a self defense situation. I once used one of my own to defend myself from an attacker with a technique that I learned from the SAS. However...grappling is not really so effective in most situations. Your main objective is to defend and then get away. Not to gay wrestle on the ground like a monkey. Thats why most techniques in Karate is striking and kicking techniques. Undo we do have a few locks and throws.

  • @MasterNinja1990 So you were in the military and studied 12 different styles of martial arts for 10 years. Nothing wrong with having some pride in where you are from and what you have learned. I would have thought that being part of one of the most prestigious military units and having a background in martial arts would have taught one be respectful to others. Also the homophobic comments are uncalled for.

  • *sigh* I wish my BJJ school has additional focus/emphasis on self defence applications as it is shown here.

My school is all just ground grappling from the point of view of competition. Not much into how to apply in a fight or self defence situation.

  • no- these techniques werent peculiar to gracie jiu jitsu- they were just the techniques that seemed to work against larger, stronger opponents

honestly- i dont know why people seem to think Aikido doesnt work either- basically all trained in the same manner just different techniques.... i know for a fact they both work in the right circumstances... for a fact- i dont care what anyone says...

i have experienced both scenarios... truthfully

  • @denverstapleton there is a lot of overlap in techniques of brazilian/gracie jiu jitsu, judo, aikido and japanese jujutsu I have practiced in all of them and stuck with gracie jiujitsu, but I think what it comes down to is the way the techniques are practiced, the philosophy and the particular gym you practice at. aikido techniques definately works- as in the techniques hurt, but I prefer the way gracie/bjj is being practiced at my particular gym, full speed but lot of emphasis on self defense

  • no- these techniques werent peculiar to gracie jiu jitsu- they were just the techniques that seemed to work against larger, stronger opponents

  • Love this, thank you very much for creating this and sharing it.

  • i love Bjj. well the original...

  • great vid

  • Really great video, well done!

  • I like the song!

  • parabens, otimo video!

  • Awesome display of Jiu-Jitsu!

  • What's the move at 6:02 called?

  • @TheGrimRifferX It is a kind of arm lock. One of many possible variations.

  • One of my favorites. One day hope to have the skill and knowledge to make my own video.

  • The only reason Gracie Jiu-Jitsu ever lost in the octagon is because the practitioner slowed the art form down for camera. GO HARD ALWAYS!

  • Fucking beautiful!!

  • now a day trainers dont teach bjj from a self defense perspective, they dont teach these technique

    great video

  • One more thing to the detractors of the Gracies...you should be thanking them everyday for bringing submission training into the spotlight. Another thing all the striking that combats BJJ takes YEARS to perfect...6 months of BJJ in a good school puts you in the top 1% of guys walking around town. BTW I am a Jeet Kune Do guy studied Judo and BJJ, wrestled in school and bounced for 12 years. Anyone that doubts the contributions of the Gracie family should take a deeper look.

  • Excellent video men !! Very educational to an intermediate. Thank you.

  • These guys are AWESOME. The real deal. I could do about 4 techniques until I needed to get a double gulp from 7-11. These guys do this ALL DAY. Crazy cardio. Crazy technique. Incredible martial artists.

  • who is your instructor? im curious

  • Can't see anything new here that it's not already in judo

  • @edmocama You are so full of bs!

  • @edmocama Bless you for such a perfect comment. Helio is not Kano. BJJ's would erase Kano from history if they could.

  • welcome to my world, the world of BJJ

  • Fantastic, I always love the grappling in martial arts

  • Comment removed

  • can any body tell the music name please

  • So now every time fights go to the ground it's because of GRACIES. LoL.

  • very good video folks. crisp technique, from what i've read, Helio was upset that the art had gone more known in the way of sports (like Judo) than for self defense. most schools i've seen have maybe a handful of SD techs, and the rest is for competition. defending yourself is much diff psychologically, physically than stepping into a ring. thumbs up dudes

  • 6 wreslters watched this

  • @cgyfan34 haha. wow dude, that makes no sense.

  • @cgyfan34 LMAO!

  • A great demonstration video, both for technique and art (soundtrack, editing...). 5*

  • Awesome video

  • yeh, nothing brazilian about these techniques. I just call it Jiu Jitsu all around, it's all the same concept.

  • I dont know if i agree bjj created mma. it dominated it in the beginning thats for sure. I always question whether bruce lee started mma or was it the gracies. I have no clue. i jerk off to jc penny catalogs so dont take my word.

  • @heidtmanmail well considering madara (the man who taught the gracies classical Jiu-jitsu/ Judo) was going around the world competing in no holds bared matches it predates both of bruce lee and the gracies. also the gracies didn't start it in brazil either, but they took part in vale tudo. I'm not sure where it first began either though.

  • @tojiro12 yeah i dunno. who are any of us to try and figure this out. it might have even started in gladiator times.

  • @heidtmanmail

You guys are cracking me up. As far as I understand it grappling was practiced by the Romans but what we know today as Jujitsu was formed from Shaolin Kung Fu (Eagle Claw style or Chin-Na) that was taught to the Japanese. The Samurai then developed that into their empty hand style and further developed it into what we know today as Jujitsu. Then the Brazilians obviously added some more groundwork.

  • @Tarc5150 It was already perfected in other parts of the world but the Gracies successfully marketed it. It's now been branded Gracie. LoL.

  • @cyberhmoob

I couldn't agree with you more. Absouletly the best marketing job by any martial artist group I've ever seen. With that said I still find a lot of value in true BJJ or GJJ which is why I studied it for a few years. However I did get bored with it relatively quick. Cauliflower ear, rolling with a big sweatty man on top of me for 45 minutes each class, lost my interest. I prefer the Japanese Daizen Ryu just a more complete art but lots of value in GJJ ground techniques.

  • you have no clue my friend

  • @cyberhmoob it's not a static art which has reached it's final level. it's still developing every day!

  • @PastaMilo Let me guess, the GRACIE family is developing it? Perhaps the next level is a tongue lock or anal bar. LoL. All I can say the only folks buying into the BJJ BS is mostly USA. Most Asian countries already have fully developed JJ. Look what happened to the GRACIE when they took their BEST to Japan. They got destroyed "FAST" everytime. Google or Youtube Sakuraba vs Gracie. That's just 1 guy. There are many other guys around the Asian countries who's mastered how to destroy BJJ.

  • @cyberhmoob As far as individual styles go, BJJ is the most effective martial art ever developed. Had the Gracies not showed the world, most people would still believe in the old myth that a "reverse punch could kill." Regarding Sakuraba; he learned BJJ from Sergio Penha before he fought the Gracies. The only way to defeat BJJ is to use BJJ - everyone knows this today in the world of martial arts. Just trying to keep it real.

  • @JJ2006Ice You know that's not true at all. The reason BJJ survives in competition is mainly due to rules & leverage but even so it still has many weaknesses and people who know BJJ can easily use another discipline to defeat BJJ. BJJ is not a real world skill you can use against anyone out side of NO RULEs fight.Look at how WanderLei, Anderson Silva, Sakuraba, Mirko, & many other guys combat BJJ. They easily evade takedowns and kick, knee, elbow the living daylights out of their BJJ competitor.

  • @cyberhmoob You've just proven my point: the only way fighters can survive is by learning BJJ and using it against other BJJ fighters. BTW all the fighters you've named are BJJ fighters. Crocop trains under Fabricio Werdum, Silva is a BJJ Black Belt under Carlson Gracie Jr. lineage, Wanderlei is a BJJ black belt, Saku under Penha. ALL have trained in BJJ! So where's your logic?

  • @JJ2006Ice You don't mean using "it". You mean knowing how weak it is and destroying "it" with another discipline & that is exactly what the world is doing:P JJ has many flaws and I'll defend my opinion on that it survives in competition via rules. This is why Gracie family got crushed in Japan many times. Those rules do not support BJJ the way UFC does.

  • @cyberhmoob I need to comment on this. You have got it dead right, lots of people do defeat practitioners of BJJ but the true form of GRACIE Jiu Jitsu was developed for the street, this is well documented and people need to understand that BJJ was developed for sport and rules, Gracie JJ was not. with regards to Mirko and all the other fighters you have mentioned YEAH they did beat a Gracie but the Gracies have never said they were unbeatable and have never had great stand up skills. get it.

  • @Tarc5150 Pffft. Eagle claw kung-fu is NOT BJJ. There's no proof of this and anyone who believes kung-fu is the source of all martail arts is drinking too much kool-aid. Maeda (Conte Koma) taught Carlos Gracie a mixture of wrestling, jiu-jitsu and no-holds-barred fighting techniques he picked up during his travels. The Gracies were under his tutelage for no more than 4 years. The next decades saw them refining and re-inventing what we know today as BJJ or Gracie JJ.... kung-fu is BJJ??? WTF?

  • @JJ2006Ice

If you read my message. I wrote as far as I understand it. I don't claim to be an expert. However, Maeda taught Judo this is very well doucumented. In fact, Carlos Gracie originally called Grace Jiu Jitsu 'Brazilian Judo'. I was told that directly from Carlos Machado at the IMB Academy and read it in interviews. If I'm wrong so be it. As for Kung Fu's role it also very well documented that they were practising grappling long before Jujitsu was even a thought, so were the greeks.

  • @Tarc5150 At the time judo and JJ were synonymous so I'm not surprised. However, Maeda joined the Kodokan with a background in newaza (which was then not part of the Kodokan syllabus). Furthermore, he wasn't a traditionalist and added whatever techniques he acquired. But regarding kung-fu and grappling - ALL martial arts have some form of grappling, that doesn't mean they're related. Kung-fu just likes to take credit for all other martial arts because it can't compete.

  • @JJ2006Ice

Well history texts show otherwise. You can look it up all you like. Japanese people hate to hear it but really they are all just Chinese immigrants, even wikipedia supports this. Sun Tzu wrote about Martial Arts including grappling in 350BC, the first know texts of Japanese Life date aroun 100 AD. Jujitsu was not practiced by the Samurai till the 5th century. The basis of almost every every technique in Jujo or Jujitsu can be traced to China. It's a fact and not really arguable.

  • @Tarc5150

Excuse me I meant 15th century for the Samurai

  • @Tarc5150

LOL...that seems true indeed. And as a chinese, kung fu has its credits from India...just not sure which art. haha

  • @JJ2006Ice

Oh and best of luck in your training. BJJ is a fantastic martial art. I hope you enjoy it.

  • real martial arts I like it , I like it nice crisp tecniques

  • True samurais

  • Love this!!!

  • Fantastic video! I wish people put more emphasis on defese persao instead "the game" jugao. thank you very much.

  • u guys move great. congrats.

  • in 4:50 you did wrong!!

you got to take that arm that is free, or your oponent will break your face!!!

    LOL!!!

  • bem interessante

  • Very very nice video, when I see it I want directly start to grapple,I´m a BJJ beginner, but couldnt you get in a Triangle Choke at 4:52 ?

sorry for my bad english :D

  • When BJJ turns to self defence he resembles a broken down style of Japanese Jujutsu

  • @dudesrock2

i think thats exactly the point. a simpler version of j jiu jitsu

  • @dudesrock2 - I believe that 'BJJ' is an American term. I have friends from Brazil that say in Brazil, Jiu Jitsu is simply 'Jiu Jitsu' like in any other country, with no claim of it being invented in Brazil.

  • @henh32

afcourse, for the brazilians itsa just jiu jitsu. also for the japanese. the rest of the world uses bjj and jjj to describe them and keep them apart

  • I totally loved the video! It made me want to put on my gi and start training despite it being 5:00 am! 5 stars!

  • great!!!!!!

  • great!!

  • To be able to tell any man that he cannot defeat you is to wield true power - Saulo Ribeiro (on Helio Gracie)

  • Loved this video...great demonstrations! Thank you for sharing guys :)

  • This is clearly one of the BEST demonstration videos I've ever seen!!! Great techniques!!!

  • Yea too many people turn it into a sport and forget about the self defence aspect.

  • Great vid, BJJ is very good for self defense too.

  • awesome video

  • 5 stars...!!

    great vid

  • Great Video!!!

  • Great vid!!! Five stars!!

  • very good combo,good moves.

    thanks for the post

  • Muito legal mesmo irmaos!!! Me surpreenderam com o trabalho de 80 tecnicas do Jiu Jitsu raiz! Parabens pelos seus legados tambem! Viva Helio em nossos coracoes! Forte abraco!

  • recpect

  • wow!! GREAT VID!!!

  • Solid!

  • GREAT video. You guys rock!

  • to bad alot of bjj schools dont teach these techniques anymore becuase everybodys so obsessed with the sport and mma jiu jitsu.

  • true..

  • one of the good video's on YouTube !

I like that they did the old school style jiu-jitsu self defense video, instead of complex ground and sport jiu-jistu stuff. It reminded me of the early Gracie video's. All simple moves anyone can do.

  • i enjoyed the real fight simulations around 2:39

  • beautiful sentece at 0:12

  • thanx for this beautiful video!!

  • the true bjj started coming in at 4:50

  • @iNoobCA No no, true bjj was the entire video. Old school, very well done.

  • the wholee video was BJJ except most people dont know about the take downs of BJJ which was most of the early part of the video. i assure you it was all traditional BJJ

  • @iNoobCA no thats actually just the sport side of it.

  • Magnifique travail

  • Great video. I posted this link on our Dojo's FB group. I'm a female BJJ martial artist competing in my second tournament in a month. Can't wait!

  • @EnchantedOrchids How did you do in your second tournament????

  • @zachier13 I did great. My next one is in a few weeks. Almost a blue belt. I'm working hard. Check out Kimberli Smith, she's good, and fun to watch in real life at the tournaments. She's only 15 or 16 now.

  • @EnchantedOrchids i've checked out Kimberley Smith..good match! So you're still working hard for the next tournament? RSPCT! When are we getting to see your matches???

  • @EnchantedOrchids is not a sport for females sorry

  • Great tribute vid -and great technique guys.

  • Good stuff guys, great video

  • phil this is some great stuff bro

  • Learn Gracie jiu jitsu, GJJ not BJJ.

  • They are the same, if you are talking about the self-defense techniques. In Brazil, everyone calls it Jiu-jitsu. BJJ is what those outside Brazil call it and, Gracie Jiu-jitsu is a marketing term used by Rorion. Every good Brazilian instructor can teach the self-defense techniques, but most are interested in the sporting aspect, so they concentrate on that.

  • @MrPotatoesLatkie Well put, i'm just implying that it's better to learn from a school that starts out teaching the beginner self defence techniques instead of launching them straight into the fitness/sport aspects which too many schools do.

  • I would not recommend armbarring after the takedown because you endup on your back, i would recommend putting one knee on his head and the other on his ribs(your basically kneeling on him) whilst controling his arm(you can still lock it that way), this way your in a safe position and have a clear field of view for any incoming threats.

  • Jiu jitsu is used in the aussie military but only to the extent until the soldier gets a weapon system.

  • I'd feel sooo bad for whoever decided to pick a fight wit these dudes lol

  • BJJ is the part sport version of Gracie jiu jitsu while Gracie jiu jitsu is more focused on grappling for the street.

  • Yeah it true all GJJ Dojos are for self defence, but not all BJJ dojos are for sport,I meen to be a "Certified GJJ instructor" you have to complete a seminar at the HQ in Torrance,CA. So just because its a a school says BJ,dont look down upon it. My instructor is from Brazil and has his BB from Royce, but its still a BJ school because he didnt take the seminar.

  • Nice video... But the kicks?!

    Terrible kicks...

  • dont say that dude...they know how to hit and where to hit...viva la helio gracie!

  • @kizukigaia Kicks? These guys would kick your ass thats all that matters..

  • Defense for those bad kicks is very easy. Even a child could do it. It is not necessary be a martial artist to defense those kicks. Think about this, man.

  • What's your point? This vid is about what an awesome self defense system BJJ is.

  • My point is: To know how effective a martial art can be, you need to defense yourself against good attacks.

  • define a GOOD attack lol these are designed to defend against a comon street attack its not like your gonna get jumped by shogun rua for gods sake hahaha

  • @ironlou1 Even if a UFC fighter does attack you in these fashions you can still defend yourself in these ways.

  • Seriously, a beautiful tribute. You guys did a great job. And a very phat soundtrack as well. What's the name of this sound?

  • Very well done !!!!!! Old school JIU JITSU

  • Just to add, ALL of these self defense shown in the video are text book and EXACTLY to a T what I learned when taking BJJ yet GJJ is different ? No offense but it sounds like you've probably never studied the art nor have been a GJJ/BJJ practitioner.

  • the Gracie's themselves have said they are different...is that not good enough? lol

  • Nice demo video btw !! Very clean technique !! Classic BJJ

  • 2:41 The classic way I've seen many early Gracie use to close the distance into the clinch.

  • nice to see the real Gracie Jiujitsu rather than the generic BJJ. simple takedowns and finishes on the ground rather than rolling with each other.

  • Kempobrad are you retarded ? GJJ and BJJ are the same shit basically.. Even if you train in a GJJ academy you still get a lot of mat "rolling" time.. That is the essence of BJJ/GJJ is that you get to put your theory and practiced techinques to use against a fully resisting opponent.. This is why I feel BJJ is different from Karate for example is that you test your skill against a non conforming opponent rather than karate with theorized technics with no live training..

  • tell that to the Gracie's. Royce himself has said there is a difference, as has Helio. the point is most generic schools that i've seen at least simply do groundfighting and nothing else. and no i'm not retarded, are you? since when does karate have no live training? lol

  • Okay Kemp how is there a difference? The positions techniques are THE SAME.. Triangle choke, armbar, self defense, rear naked chokes ? It is the same shit... Karate does not practice live (non kata)training or Randori at full force, its more point system training. BJJ you roll ) at full force with no pre determined set of moves, thats the difference in training. BJJ/GJJ for S.D is the same concept. You should read the history of the art it will open your eyes more on the evolution of BJJ

  • I have read the history. if you want to look at it that way...bjj is (as has been said before) Basically Just Judo...right? don't believe me take Royce and Helio's word on it. not all karate is bs point sparring man. live training doesn't necessarily have to be FULL FORCE all of the time. look at kyokushin and other traditional karate tournaments in japan and you'll see it's not all prearranged tip tap sparring.

  • From what I know, and I am not entirely sure, but I beleive Helio was concerned that competition BJJ was steering the competetive art toward control rather than submission. (people stalling in side control to win a match). I beleive the new GJJ federation competition rules allow for a longer (limitless?) time, ensuring that submission contiues to be the prime focus of competition.

I do not beleive there is any difference in the arts BJJ/GJJ used to make those submissions.

  • cooooool

    :D

  • 5 stars!

  • sweet rocking the animal gi

  • This is fantastic

  • awesome stuff.. so important to review the self defense part of BJJ.. thanks!

  • When He Gets Him In The Head Lock And He Rolls Him Off Wut Would Happen If The Guy Kept His Grip?

  • Thanx to the Migliarese brothers on putting a good video of the Maetial Arts Gracie Jiu-Jitsu ( Brazilian jiu-jitsu) founded by Helio Gracie. Thanx to the Gracie family for sharing this easy and fun to learn art and for putting the seed in the USA know as the UFC/MMA.

  • tyebo87, please ask your TKD instructor what the difference is between small circle and large circle. See what he says and do let me know.

  • ok point taken. the techniques im seeing are modified from the ones that i have learnt. ill admit that i didnt see it because i dont no enough about gracie jujitsu to compare it with japanese jujitsu. one of the black belts in my TKD class is a balck belt in jap jujitsu aswell and after showing him the video he put me straight. at least i learnt somthing from all of this! cheers

  • Thanks for your honesty and sincerity Tyebo87.

I cross trained in various arts for 16+yrs including with Royce and Rickson and I can tell ya even they have slightly varying techniques from each other. Having started my JJ in Japanese, I learned big differences early from the Gracie JJ.

Best wishes to all martial arts lovers, and special thanks to Jiu Jitsu Matrix for this video.

  • really its the training method from judo that makes it different than koryu jujutsu which is kata based. other than that the "techniques" themselves are pretty similar to jujutsu.

  • theres quite a few of these techniques in this video that we get taught in my TKD class aswell. but trained the same way that is shown above aswell and not actually in sparring like in GJJ. a good judo school will also teach you basic striking aswell. all depends on the schools focus, sport or self defence.

  • and btw..JKD is very cool as well =]

    Bruce lee is a monster

  • i dont mean to sound dis respectfull BJJ is a great ring fighting art maybe one of the best and im sure that it has many uses for self defence. but people put it up on this pedestal of being the greatest art in the world and are blind to its weaknesses ( which all arts have) its main weakness is focus on ground fighting as an effective means to self defence. jeet kune do BTW is not a martial art its a philosophy its just a combination of different arts thats like saying MMA is a martial art !

  • I think this video show very well how the art is NOT only based on ground fighting. traditionally Gracie Jiu Jitsu is quite a complete self defense system including basic striking and even ways to avoid the ground. A good GJJ self defense demo, like this one, shows many moves that avoid the ground totally. Its a shame that because of the hype of MMA, GJJ is only shown as a sport, and many instructors teach it as such...damn shame

  • i totally agree with you there pal im pretty sure that the GJJ that helio used was actually quite a complete and good method of self defence. but the majority of schools will teach GJJ with more of a sport influence as opposed to a self defence one and will primarily focus on sport sparring. Taekwondo is actually the same ans look at that. originally TKD included punches kicks, knees, elbows, throws and joint locks aswell as chokes. but now most schools only teach the sport kicking side of it.

  • you can still find TKD schools that teach the throws and chokes etc but a good one is hard to find. i should think that GJJ will fall into the same trap as TKD did and become far to sport orientated as it grows increasingly popular. its a shame but it happens to all martial arts.

  • guillotinex17 you couldn't be further from the truth. GJJ/BJJ teaches dick for striking.. Most teaching is ground fighting and how to close the distance, how to get your opponent on the ground (in a your terrain) Comments like yours makes me doubt you've trained GJJ/BJJ at all. After training BJJ for 8 mths my first instinct would be to take someone to the ground rather than standing up.. I'd be like a karate guy trying to take some 1 to the ground. doesn't make sense in that martial art.

  • So... you'd be like a karate guy trying to take someone to the ground? Bjj is simply Japaneese Judo orignated in Okinawa Japan taught to (Carlos Gracie, primairly "the founder".) By Esai Maeda a Japanese immigrant that taught the techniques to Carlos in Brazil as a (Thank you for hospitality) Helio Gracie prohibited from practicing the techniques due to his small physique learned from years of watching his brothers practice and "developed" what is known today as Gracie Jiu jitsu.

  • awsome video.

I love the song in the begining and end

    anyone know what it is?

  • great vid showing the techniques and what are the songs names?

  • damn this shits hella cool :) wish i could do alla that

  • The difference betwen this sistem of jiu-jitsu for real fighting and the tournament competition jiu-jitsu is HUGE. God bless Grand Master Helio Gracie for sharing his techniques with the world, and let´s be thankfull for the instructors that are still teaching this perfect sistem!!!

  • The Jiu-Jitsu that Grand Master Helio Gracie created was intended for self defense; that is real fighting with no rules, no time limits and no weight classes. It´s the sistem that gives the little guy a chance of surviving against (and eventually defeating) a bigger, stronger oponent, and that is why it emphasyses defense over ofense, because that´s what you should do against someone a lot bigger than you.

  • what like when frank mir getts battered by brock lesnar? what your seeing above is pretty much japanese jujitsu which was created for self defence. brazialian jujitsu was made for sport dont get the too confused. the best techniques for fighting bigger guys are the jap jujitsu ones which involve kicking to the balls and biting and gouging eyes, not rolling around on the floor with sombody whos much stronger than you.

  • Frank Mir practices sport jiu-jitsu; no wonder he got battered by Lesnar. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was NOT created for sport, Grand Master Helio adapted the techniques of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu to his slim and frail body. He modified the techniques to depend on leverage and timing, oposite to the traditional japanese jiu-jitsu that relied on strenght and speed. He tested his techniques on no holds barred fights (vale-tudo) against any comers, regardles of weight diference.

  • Helio Gracie Jiu-Jitsu became famous because of the vale-tudo fights; he created an art for self defense. He never intended it to be a tournament sport with rules, points and weight classes...
