I know I'm thinking too much. It's just that I'm so into Voyage again now that the final 13 episodes are coming out. I'm chewed it slowly and savoring every bite. Over the Christmas holidays, I'm going to play all 110 episodes back to back. The wife will just have to deal with it!
@65kowalski Put the wife inside the metal cylinder in suspended animation with Robert Duval in "The Invaders" episode until you've played the last episode.
I hate to nitpick these episodes, I still love them and this was one of the best. But if Karyl (Ames' "guinea pig" for his eternal youth experiment) was "really 200 years old," how did she remain on this vale long enough to meet up with Ames and receive his "vito-synthesis" formula. These logical absurdities occurred more frequently in Seasons 3 & 4
@65kowalski You're thinking too much! Just relax and enjoy the show. (I agree - there are plenty of absurdities in Voyage. But somehow I never thought of this one.)
Ewww, Robert Loggia played an arrogant MFer in this episode. Maybe had there been a 5th season, Irwin would have gotten Loggia's Grant Ames, John Casavettes' Everett Lang and the guy who played Dr. Weber in Season 2's "The Sky is on Fire" together for an episode tabbed "Arrogant A-Holes Attack!"
Richard Basehart looks a lot younger in season 2 than in season 4. Fighting those monsters every week took its toll. (Fighting the script writers probably didn't help, either.)
@TooleMan87 I wonder how many injuries they had on that set due to "roman candles" and sparklers of one sort or another falling on the actors. You can see burning pyrotechnics on shirts in some of those promos. Ever wonder why sound effects would insert clicking into the background of sync sound shots of live bridge dialogue. They didn't; the effect is caused by rotary relays that operate the multitudes of panel lights. I worked with these and they're noisy. This was pre- solid state switching.
@joshweiss01 I read once that Basehart demanded a dry-run of an explosion scene, so when they set off the charge it took out half the bridge. Basehart went to lunch humming "There's no business like show business."
@TooleMan87 That's a great story, very funny and visual. Perhaps one day a feature will be made about the behind the scenes of Irwin Allen S.F. shows, most likely concentrating on "Voyage". As a kid I saved an issue of TV Guide, Jan. '65 maybe, about a tv journalist that was given a tour of the seaview set and when he offered the observation that "these submarine sets sure are interesting", he received in response disgruntled mutterings! I wonder what the bill looked like to repair the bridge?
This episode features the most brutal fight scene in the history of the show...when our scientist escapes using the chamber he beats a crewman with his weight-belt...incredibly no ribs are crushed by this (!!) but its pretty rough stuff!!
That's an idea, Tooleman. Better yet, I'll stuff her into one of Dr. Turner's cylinders (from "Fires of Death.") That way, she'll come out golden(!)
