This video disgusts me. First of all, the guy lies right off the bat and says he threw a weapon on the ground even though what he threw on the ground looked NOTHING like a weapon. Then when he asks if he is clear to engage he is asked if they have weapons and he says YES they have weapons in their hands(when they clearly do not). @nycgoldenboy you know they scout these guys for hours before engagement right? they dont just pick a random group of people and drop em with gunfire. they follow them from hideouts and then send the apache in for closer range monitoring. the video quality is bad, but from what i could tell he threw down an RPG. im not picking a fight or anything (im a vet myself) as for the wounded part, countless times ive seen videos where they have received orders that if there is movement then engage.

What was thrown in the field could have been many things a RPG maybe but maybe a hundred other things as well. That closer monitoring from the Apache is just worthless in this case. @nycgoldenboy There are a lot of problems with that post. (1) You see the profile of the weapon as it's being thrown, and it's pretty plainly an RPG 7. (2) There's no requirement that you be 100% of every target you engage; any use of artillery would be "just criminal" by your standards because you can never know exactly who it will hit. The "suspect" behavior was enough. (3) There is no legal issue with killing the wounded if they are still moving around and cannot be captured.
@quizybuck How can you be sure that is an RPG and not a rake or hoe? He is abandoning it in a field that appears to have crops. It was dropped carelessly, as if he didn't care where it was. If it was a weapon, it would have probably been hidden. If you have ever seen collateral murder on Wiki leaks, the camera man has a camera that sort of resembles an RPG so the Apache took him out, though he was innocent.
@quizybuck Also, US forces try to use Laser Guided Bombs as much as possible because too many civilians are often killed by artillery. Which does not help the situation at hand at all. If this was a conventional war, artillery could be used more liberally. But in an insurgency, where you don't know who the enemy is, its dangerous to use artillery because innocent people may be killed in the process.

@93pickalow Then again, we are not positive this is a night time engagement. As, with thermal vision, it is hard to tell whether it is day or night. Nor do we know, what year this incident happened. It could have been during the shoot to kill curfew, or after.
My opinion is that, there is a chance that this could have been an unwarranted use of force. However, I acknowledge that these farmers could also be insurgents. I lean ever so slightly to the former. But I am fairly split.

Here is an interesting perspective a friend gave me. What if these Iraqi's were abandoning their weapons because they didn't know what else to do with them? Its not like you can go up to an American position with weapons and expect to survive. You guys never saw the full report on this action...they were just simple farmers working their field. It wasn't a weapon but a replacement tractor part brought to the field and exactly where the tractor did stopped. You can see when the tractor has stopped , that the ground was just turned. It was a friendly fire incident. Do some research on it and you'll found out as I did.
@oscr112 They didn't know as a fact. They assumed that because the guy through something into the field during the night and then left it there, that it was a weapon. It could have been a weapon, it could have been a harmless object. The only people that know are now dead. Even if it was a weapon, the pilots still didn't know what the intention of throwing the weapons in the fields was. It didn't look like the Iraqis took much care in marking where the weapons were.

@oscr112 Perhaps the Iraqis were abandoning the weapons so that no one could use them. It is unknown and will remain forever unknown. What is known is that the Apache opened fire on unarmed men. In my opinion, it would have been better if the US had sent a ground team to search the area and question the Iraqis about it. Alas, whats done is done and there is no going back. But, hopefully the US has learned a lesson; that when they shoot first and ask questions later, it can anger civilians.

If memory serves, the first time I saw this video was about 5 or 6 years ago. This video disgusts me. First of all, the guy lies right off the bat and says he threw a weapon on the ground even though what he threw on the ground looked NOTHING like a weapon. Then when he asks if he is clear to engage he is asked if they have weapons and he says YES they have weapons in their hands(when they clearly do not). You can tell when he asks if he has permission to engage he is DYING to pull that trigger. I am ashamed to call these people fellow Americans and hope they rot in hell.

That this video is evidence in a crime. And before and comment about me start, I am an Army vet of 5 years (19k), with 2 tours. For 1 I could not tell if what was thrown into the field was a weapon it. Yes the behavior was suspect but even in war you must have restrain. 2 the pilots where not engage, so going around and picking off people cause you have hunches is just criminal. @nycgoldenboy you know they scout these guys for hours before engagement right? they dont just pick a random group of people and drop em with gunfire. they follow them from hideouts and then send the apache in for closer range monitoring. the video quality is bad, but from what i could tell he threw down an RPG. im not picking a fight or anything (im a vet myself) as for the wounded part, countless times ive seen videos where they have received orders that if there is movement then engage.

@nycgoldenboy There are a lot of problems with that post. (1) You see the profile of the weapon as it's being thrown, and it's pretty plainly an RPG 7. (2) There's no requirement that you be 100% of every target you engage; any use of artillery would be "just criminal" by your standards because you can never know exactly who it will hit. The "suspect" behavior was enough. (3) There is no legal issue with killing the wounded if they are still moving around and cannot be captured.

@quizybuck How can you be sure that is an RPG and not a rake or hoe? He is abandoning it in a field that appears to have crops. It was dropped carelessly, as if he didn't care where it was. If it was a weapon, it would have probably been hidden. If you have ever seen collateral murder on Wiki leaks, the camera man has a camera that sort of resembles an RPG so the Apache took him out, though he was innocent.

@quizybuck Also, US forces try to use Laser Guided Bombs as much as possible because too many civilians are often killed by artillery. Which does not help the situation at hand at all. If this was a conventional war, artillery could be used more liberally. But in an insurgency, where you don't know who the enemy is, its dangerous to use artillery because innocent people may be killed in the process.

@93pickalow Then again, we are not positive this is a night time engagement. As, with thermal vision, it is hard to tell whether it is day or night. Nor do we know, what year this incident happened. It could have been during the shoot to kill curfew, or after.
My opinion is that, there is a chance that this could have been an unwarranted use of force. However, I acknowledge that these farmers could also be insurgents. I lean ever so slightly to the former. But I am fairly split.

All that gets reported is more iraqi cilivians or Afghan civilians killed in an American attack.... you never hear about the ongoing attacks that the soldiers have to withstand until we are given the intel and permission to retaliate with a strategic strike. Here is an interesting perspective a friend gave me. What if these Iraqi's were abandoning their weapons because they didn't know what else to do with them? You guys never saw the full report on this action...they were just simple farmers working their field. It wasn't a weapon but a replacement tractor part brought to the field and exactly where the tractor did stopped. You can see when the tractor has stopped , that the ground was just turned. It was a friendly fire incident. Do some research on it and you'll found out as I did.

@oscr112 They didn't know as a fact. They assumed that because the guy through something into the field during the night and then left it there, that it was a weapon. It could have been a weapon, it could have been a harmless object. The only people that know are now dead. Even if it was a weapon, the pilots still didn't know what the intention of throwing the weapons in the fields was. It didn't look like the Iraqis took much care in marking where the weapons were.

@oscr112 Perhaps the Iraqis were abandoning the weapons so that no one could use them. It is unknown and will remain forever unknown. What is known is that the Apache opened fire on unarmed men. In my opinion, it would have been better if the US had sent a ground team to search the area and question the Iraqis about it. Alas, whats done is done and there is no going back. But, hopefully the US has learned a lesson; that when they shoot first and ask questions later, it can anger civilians.

If memory serves, the first time I saw this video was about 5 or 6 years ago. If you might remember back then, Americans(the real ones)were angrily getting familiar with terms like insurgents, IED's, ect. Marines were dying at the hands of sneaky, deceptive cowards. I also seem to remember a significantly higher quality video back then then this one, believe it or not. This comes back to what I said about body language.
