i heard his sons middle name is h. which would make sense considering that i also heard that this song is about how he was abused by his father and has urges to do the same onto his son and wife but cant because he loves them and it kills him
This is why I love Tool. Everyone here is trying to understand Maynard's lyrics and discuss it, while people who watch Moves Like Jagger are a bunch of grown men commenting on the lead singers dick.
In early December of 2002, I found out I was going to be a father. Late that same December, my father passed away. The next July, my son was born........That's what this song is about. The song is about a new father overwhelmed by his emotions for his son while considering a past that has made him jaded and bitter.
I hate when people try to make their favorite genre seem like it's the elite. I love Tool with a passion, but its a shame that people can't just accept everyone's different musical taste. I love Green Day, too. One of the best shows I've been to. A lot of Tool fans are narrow minded and very quick to judge people who like anything but Tool and APC. ehh.. just annoying. Oh, and this song is my favorite.
@coreyhhh Are you on crack??? Tool and APC are my favorite bands but there are soooooo many other types of genres I like. I dont know anyone who just likes those two bands. If anyone is being narrow minded it is you my dear.
@MeganLeyba Well you obviously misread my comment. I said that I hate it when people try to make their favorite genre seem like the best. Not when people say every other band sucks, but tool. And I didn't say ALL of the Tool fans do that. I said A LOT of fans. And trust me, there are a lot of people who do. And to answer the former, No, I am not on crack. Please don't rush to think I'm trying to be an ass or dis other bands. If anything you should be agreeing with me my dear. But oh well.
@coreyhhh I have to agree...it is called a cult following. But with that said, just enjoy the music, and don't argue with self-proclaimed music snobs. You'll never win;);)
If you think this songs is just about ONE thing, you need to think a bit deeper. Tool intentionally structures their lyrics so that anyone can interpret them in a way they seem fit. This song is a perfect example: the lyrics portray a very general sense of trying to break away from something and still feeling connected to it, even after "the snake is drowned." Now that something can actually be a drug addiction, a relationship; or in Maynard's case, how his son changed him for the better.
ImaSuperBeing. Regarding your OWS reply. Your right. We should boycott but that seems a little unrealistic at this stage. Occupying Wall Street is just an attempt for us to get the message out. Granted I've been getting a lot of "fuck you" and "go back to your mothers basement" but I'll take that. At least people are talking. The truth is, we aren't after ppls hard earned money or to crush capitalism. Thanks.
tool never ceases to amaze me. ive heard this song so many times along with all of their songs... but i can always approach them with a different idea in mind and then they take that idea i have and expand it to levels that blow me away. for me tool is as much visual as they are music. i never have their art work in mind when i listen to them... i am always in my own visual art fantasy in my mind.
honestly i wish i could have twice as much room to comment right now."use it wisely"... fuckfart
@MajorasMaskPro are you dumb... bass is the foundation of the music you here and gives the power to music and you to call it your ass scratcher... eat a dick....
@TecHoAriaT It was a joke if you didn't get that. Music is diverse, but really I don't want to hear what you do and don't like. It's a matter of opinion, its not that greenday is a bad band, but most of the people that do like them get sucked into this soft rock/ boyband rock fad and don't like the heavier stuff like Tool and other bands like it. Don't call me ignorant for stating what most others can agree with
@MattPictures13 Yeah I always get pissed off when other Green Day Fans and other TooL fans fight with each other. I mean, Greeny Day was some of the first music I ever liked to listen to atall, but they're not TooL by a longshot.
@mdunct what the fuck we gonna do in wall street? you want to support a revolution stop buying your food at the super market and grow it. bam. thats trillions of dollers from health care and the corrupt ass food industry that wouldnt be funding their stupid ass war.
This song hits like a 10 ton truck. If you've ever had a chance to be in this situation, to have these feelings, listening to this is purifying... but sorta painful at the same.
The songs about whatever the fuck you want it to be, tool is a band that makes songs for you to make your own, to use as a TOOL to make the message yurself, stop telling me what the songs sre about because it's watever you want it to be :P
As if any TOOL song is about just one subject, I think you can safely assume the natural analogy it's intended to appear as would be drug use. Example, Stinkfist on the surface looks like anal fisting. However, there's more to it. Same with this song I think.... I've read that H is the middle initial of Maynar'd son Devo. Perhaps this is about the battle between juggling family life and desiring to be with your kids and being on the road touring all the time?
the songs name is "H" what else do you need? and he makes it sound like a relationship with a girl. well whats a female hero called. a heroin lol. lyrics in stinkfist "i dont WANT it, i just NEED it to live to breath to know im alive" and also he starts with "finger deep within the boarderline", then wrist then elbow. just like a growing addiction. he made a song named "opium" not that it has anything to do with heroin. but obviously the drug was on his mind its about religion blinding people.
@shapesaddto9 Fuck that shit. My faith in Christ does not blind me, it gives me eyes to see the light. it was herion that blinded my ass thinking everything was fine when i was high. That shit comes from satan himself. I used to love tool but now i see how fuckin evil they are. CHRIST IS MY SAVIOR NOW NOT HERION.
@TheGodofweak Call me retarded but i pray that you see the light and the truth one day. i pray God reveals Himself to you and shows you his love and grace. its not up to me to judge you. Jesus is my living God He is the way the truth and the light. may God be with you
@LawDawg64 Oh my goodness your right I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT ! only thing, Jesus said that your a retard, and god said he is sending you to hell for your sins... sorry bro
@LawDawg64 No offense dude i dont know what conversation u were havin with this guy and i am also a christian but i dont think that utube is the place for religious debate or really a good place to push your religion. if someone doesnt agree with your beliefs just leave them alone and talk about something else. were all people and we should all get along.
@xAlanMaverickx none taken i get where your comin from but i didnt tell anyone to repent or they were goin to hell. i just voiced my opinion and i prayed for the guy. shoot me. i aint pushin nothing on no one. they can do what they please. its not the first time ive had someone tell me im dumb for my beliefs. im entitled to my opinion yo.
At the part where he says "I could have cried then, I should have cried then", that whole section, if I'm really focused on the song when listening to that it can bring me to tears. The emotion is just so intense.
im not saying any one is wrong but iv always thought of it as heroin "i am to connected to slip away" and then the way he talks about the snake, i feel like the snake is heroin. but i do agree with pkw0112
I don't know if you know this but Maynards son's middle name is H, think song is about his birth and how it changed him. The lyrics about dying and not minding is about his genetics being passed on so he is okay with death because a part of him will live on. This song was explained years ago on a defunct website called innuendo cornicopia which was dedicated to explaining the band's lyrics.
@clokwerk1945 and also h. is the periodic sign for hydrogen, the first element, that which forged the furnace of the first suns of the universe which then "gave birth" to the other elements because it is during their "death" or super nova in the extreme heat all the heavier elements were created...
The song's Meaning - someone asked and I am not going to go through the lame comments to see if anyone posted it: "the song is about being very close to someone who is tearing you apart, someone you can't bring yourself to leave, but someone who will destroy you because you can't leave them. It is the price you pay for being close to them; they aren't doing it on purpose: "considerately"
I like the symphony of vocals, mixed with the symbolic lyrics, and perfectly orchestrated music to top it all off. You have a perfect song. This music brings out thoughts and memories that are so precious to me. As long as I'm livin and blood runs warm in these veins "Tool" is my music of choice. I sleep Tool, breathe Tool, and eat Tool....
@jakewareham Then upload a corrected version of the video or stop being agressive and insulting him. God how much i hate those agressive wimps on the internet...
THANKS to the uploader for your very nice work with the lyrics :)
You can listen to this song 1,000 times and still not understand the genius of it. It's not only the lyrics....Listen to the drum parts towards the end. TOOL is as unique as a band will ever get. They are unmatched, unequaled and completely changed the way I look at music.
yea anyone who has ever been addicted to any kind of opiate knows the sheer hell of trying to get off it once you are physically dependant on it. It also changes your view about what reality and your self. ID wants more, reality says its wrong, and your ego wracks you with guilt and inferiority Althought i kicked 2 years ago the thought of what withdrawl feels like still makes my skin tingle and for a second i remember how it felt. DONT DO OPIATES KIDS THEY TURN EVEN THE BEST PEOPLE INTO SCUM
@seenoevil760 good for you for being strong enough to kick it. Know a few people who can't, but try. I just quit smoking but I can't not smoke when I'm drinking..... And I'm probably an alchoholic. Actually, no probably about it. I used to drink every day, so right now I am quiting my two biggest vises and having a hell of a time but I'm sure I can do it. Addictions are terrible but they can be overcome. And nothing good in life is easy
@noinsanity76 if not about H then what? thuogh these lyrics arent exactly correct the message to me still seems pretty clear. Ive been a long time tool fan and have never interpretted this song ant other way.

DONT DO OPIATES KIDS THEY TURN EVEN THE BEST PEOPLE INTO SCUM
seenoevil760 7 months ago
@seenoevil760 good for you for being strong enough to kick it. Know a few people who can't, but try. I just quit smoking but I can't not smoke when I'm drinking..... And I'm probably an alchoholic. Actually, no probably about it. I used to drink every day, so right now I am quiting my two biggest vises and having a hell of a time but I'm sure I can do it. Addictions are terrible but they can be overcome. And nothing good in life is easy
