Yeah, there is a black accent. And you have it too in my opinion. Black accents do vary depending on the region, but they're heavily influenced by the Southern accent in general (for historical reasons obviously). This is what science says too, check out the Wiki article called "African American Vernacular English".
white people don't have an accent. black people dont have an accent. americans have accents. and ghetto people have accents, have you ever heard lil wayne talk?
black accent? wtf does that mean black ppl from ny talk way different than blacks from atlanta or memphis. big difference same with chicago and la. The south has the most thickest form of ebonics all those ppl on the first 48 they barley pronouncin syylables
I'm black and I'm from Alabama. And I'm told that I do not have a black accent or a southern/country accent I even had a teacher call me a yank and one that called me a "Black Square" didn't bother me though. I thought it was funny.
it all depends on ur region...African Americans from taxes have taxes accent which is different from blacks in new york. it just depends on the region you grew up
hey..wazz up ..f**** peoples...u r an O.G...with dat black accent...do me a favor pleaseee..i wanna hear u rap ''goin' out like geez'' by mc eight......holla from Greece
A Good test is to travel to another English speaking Country. If You went to the Virgin Islands for example,You would definitely be noted as having an American accent(not Black!). A lot of black folks are just very creative, so it is no surprise if it is reflected in speech patterns.Caucasian,Asian,or Indian people that grow up in Jamaica have a Jamaican accent. So don't be surprised if you were to encounter someone white with a very strong Jamaican accent because they do exist!
It doesn't matter what color you are. It just depends how you were raised. You can be Chinese and talk completely american. Same with languages you can be Black or White and talk complete Chinese or any other language. All depends where you grew up.
cuz my job made me sound professional and i don't have a problem with that but if they knew where i was from they'd know that i can be just like homeboy from 40 year old virgin...nigga here now!
black people have two main accents, southern and you don't have to be from the south to have it and coastal accents(east and west) all that other shit is slang or laziness or ignorance and i'm not trying to clown. i'm 30 mins from Chi-town and i'm country sounding as fuck but it's like a different kind of country. black folks sho nuff do have an accent. and when we sound like white regular tv spokes people then they say we don't sound black. black people tell me i sound white and i laugh
You don't have an accent other than the average American Midwestern accent. I think they were trying to say that you don't speak slang. i hate my southern/country accent thats why i dont do voice tutorials. i know ppl will make fun. and people always assume that im racist because of it and because im from the south. why?
I've heard people say this before if you Google it you'll actually be surprised to see how many Caucasian people think we have accents. Some people actually had more logical questions one person mentioned that AA have a different TONE of voice from every other American whether proper or not you can often times distinct out a Black person from the TONE of voice. You for example they say you don't have a "Black Accent" but from the TONE of your voice & bass in it I could tell you're a Black male.

No disrespect, but are you really that confused about someone asking you that?! Whoever said that to you was obviously just generalizing the way "all" african americans speak (which is not right to do, in my opinion; however it isn't uncommon). Your english vernacular is different though, from what I'm accustomed to on the east coast, You speak like a Cali guy...not that there's anything wrong with that! lol
My mom recently told me that I don't talk like black person (I know great parenting skills) so now I've made it my job to find a tutorial to talk like a black person, after watching this video I showed this video to my mom and now she doesn't talk about my non-existent accent. Thanks! :)
Black people DO have an accent and if you deny it, you're only deceiving yourself. Similarly, some Hispanic people have an accent that is NOT a Spanish accent. These accents are learned from a circle of uneducated and unprofessional people who did not grow up talking to people in the middle or upper classes.
You don't need to sound like a random white person to be "accent free" since both blacks and whites have accents in their own country USA of birth.that's why regional dialects are there for.An accent has nothing to do with education.Barack Obama has been raised caucasian but to everyone he does sound black and still has no accent, hello he is american. Conclusion you are just one of the millions of idiots whose heads needs to smashed in because they talk nonsense.
I thought Barack's example would have dispelled this nonsense. It is a case by case review if your theory was true every adopted black child would have sounded like a random white person.Ever heard of children who grow up in the same household but have different speech patterns ? and sometimes accents ? I get by with 4 accents and I promess you I never cather to any specific race its entirely depends on the context.I only have a one problem I do sound "corporate" all the time
BLACK PEOPLEHAVE AN ACCENT.. IM A BLACK PERSON ON THE WEST SIDE OF CANADa and people say the same thing to me kinda just cduz their stereotypical and watch like compton movies n shii... but fuck em that lady is just retarded ahaha
yes, i do think that there is such a thing as a black accent, and I do not think it has anything to do with slang or ebonics. There is a definite tone in your voice, that when I shut my eyes and listen purely to your voice, I would definitely guess that you're black - it's most likely genetic.... Just as some people are genetically born with blue eyes, brown eyes, brown hair, blonde hair, there is a sound of the voice, and definitely a different pronunciation of words...
My nationality is Russian, And even I was said, that I have some tough speech in comparsion with Russians, who live in the capitol. So I think you should be only proud of your accent, which you have though, but it is not so expressed, imho. By the way, I like the way AfroAmerican people pronounce words most of all, you do it with style, that's one of things, that attracted me to study English in US variant, I find it more interesting. Btw, don't beat me for my bad english) Hello from Russia
I'm Russian and I heard how British, American people talk. And Black American People speak differently, maybe some of them don't even notice that... Like In Russia, people from Moscow speak one way, Krasnodar - another way, there are a lot of so-called Ukrainisms and the letter G sounds softer, people's from Caucas pronounciation is coarser and tough, e.g. Kabardians in KBR, where i do live for 22 years...
Of course there's a black accent. You call it's slang, which is partially true, but slang is what you say, an accent is how you say it. To take an example from your vid, calling a woman "shorty" is slang; Pronouncing it "shawtay" is an accent. The stereotypical black english in is a combination of slang and accent.
This is very interesting being as though I stumbled across this video. I'll to make it brief as possible though so for starters it's 2011 and people are still illiterate as can be. Secondly, being that I'm from the east coast it sounds like the further west you go people tend to sound more nerdy, gay, and proper sounding. I have a friend from Xbox who sounds similar to you and he's black as well. In general we as blacks do have a different tone of voice than most non-blacks.
However, the I agree with many others that stated a person's tone of voice has nothing to do with an accent. And, African American Vernacular has nothing to do with a persons sounding a certain way. Though, I believe ethnicity plays a part of a person's accent depending on location but that doesn't stop them from sounding like their neighbor who is of another race. Most people relate all "black accent" with slang and talking "southern". Wtf? lol
@omfgCantGetaUsername Yes. It's true of course we all have many relations to the south considering that was where our ancestors upbringing originated and many blacks carried the accent with them like they never left. Because so many other black people throughout the Mid-west had me thinking they were from the country as far Detroit, Chi-town etc. Just because someone says ya'll doesn't make 'em southern that's such a universal thing to say like over here in the northeast from non blacks too.
@omfgCantGetaUsername Some whites are so illiterate it's just sad they worst than some people growing up in the major big inner city conflicts. Some whites think saying "What's up dawg?" or saying "yo, dis, dat," with black speech but in Philly where I'm from the whites talk just that as well it has nothing to do with trying to hip like black people. Around Philly Italian, blacks, and some of the Polish/Irish hoods we drop R's but does that make us ghetto?
@omfgCantGetaUsername Up here most white people say yous/yaz and constantly use double negatives like "ain't no" just how many Puerto Ricans and us blacks talk the same over here too cus someone thought I was one. Just because we have an accent doesn't mean we don't know how to enunciate words correctly unless you dropped outta school. Lol. And you know how many southern white ppl that have speech impediments from the backwoods.
@omfgCantGetaUsername Sorry typos. I was trying to say in this paragraph that the way we talk here has nothing to do with any of the white ppl trying to be hip meaning (translating) like trying to be cool got it white ppl. Lol jk
everyone has an accent! you have an accent! Indians also have different sort of accents as america does. England having Cockney, Posh, Geordie, Scouse etc. Holland has a farmer accent, the intelligent way of Dutch, ghetto dutch etc. Everyone has an accent.
ok my thoughts are: there is a black accent. blacks kinda talk differently. it's a slang, you are right. but it sounds especially for non-native speakers like an own accent. but i think your accent is more white.
i didn't know there was a black accent either thought it was just slang, but i knew you weren't from the south cause down here we don't say you guys & its just certain words & the way you say them thats different . i could tell you where black too idk how bt for that person that asked y dont black folks use proper english i think its just how your comfortable tlkin nd used 2 talking then its hard 2 catch it when your saying something wrong and i think black folks always shorten & change stuff
Why don't most American blacks speak English properly? Constantly, I hear transliterations of "this", "that", "there", "get","ask","bathroom", etcetera, AS, "dis", "dat", "dare","git","ax","baffroom", etcetera.... Some amazing phrases are: "Sittin' up there" when referring to someone standing; "Conversate" for "Converse",etc... Are feckless English teachers constantly being assigned to predominately black schools? Are black Americans simply resistant to proper Grammar? What gives?
Yep. To the detriment of black people. I wonder...
There is a video on You Tube: "Mammy ...911" by glozell1.
Do "you" think this You Tube video is funny? GloZell Green has very few black fans ,but, she has thousands of white fans who love this type of shit. She is their beloved clown. Why? Because she uses a series of malaprops when speaking. Whites think GloZell's ebonics are hilarious. Do you? Check out the video and let me know.
why are you acting stupid of course their is a black accent ...its called southern with a grammatical shift which has come to be known as ebonics...you have it the southern drawl has apparently dissipated but is definitely still there and you have some of the ebonic pattern "this had happened" is a prime example. I do agree that people confuse slang with the black accent but i am not. the black american accent is real its a southern heritage with an insular aspect with a grammar shift (ebonic)
@elchasai my eyes closed i would and did definitely know that you were a black american speaking...coincidentally there is also a tonality inherent to the black american accent that is co-descendant with grammatical shift which has survived the trek of the insular vernacular from Africa through slavery and the eventual great migration patterns away from the southern united states. southern black americans and black americans from elsewhere can sometimes sound ver' similar unlike euro-americans
Complicated subject. In Texas where I live I can usually tell if someone on the phone is black or not by their accent when they are speaking proper English. Black men in general have a lower tone due to genetics I would guess. But a Texan guy wouldn't talk like a Brooklynite either. I would be able to tell you are black on the phone, even though you speak proper English.
No big deal, try having a Russian accent in Texas.
Interesting, explain why are far from being african? Be sure the way you speak, it's the american accent, and in africa there are different countries, and each country has it's own way to speak (accent) like in your country.
@MrStickman2011 Culturally, linguistically, geographically, politically, etc., etc., quite quite quite far from Africa and African (someone who is native to Africa, not racially connected to them).
its not called black accent, its called a "twang" in your voice..i heard that from someone else and it sounds better than saying black accent. You have a twang in your speech lol
having an accent means you prononce words differently. that's literally what it means. I dont need the uninformed opinions of people who don't understand the meaning of the words they use.
You are not a smart person, go consume- you are needed at walmart.
@Maameelle78 different cultures though. alot of Black kids raised with parents FROM Africa wont speak with a twang in their voice or act "hip hop-ish" unless theyre around other ppl that do. Infact the cultures are quite different and they look at each other differently...kinda like Europeans and Caucasians here..I've heard many Europeans talk trash on whites in America
Barack Obama does not speak ((BLACK))? What is the greatest stupidity that has. YEAH, I think it is the mindset of how [Black] people are opposed to how [Black] people really are. Because in truth, we are all people, human beings, & complex organisms with brains that produce thoughts. A psychological projection of a racial confusion than a speech production.
I think that there is a not a confusion over how in which a [BLACK] person speaks but over how the other person thinks. Seems like a stereotype of how they view [Black] people be than anything else. Do not let his racial confusion create further confusion within your thinking, mental well-being, & so forth.
I am hearing a lot of varying concepts from slang, jargon, lexicon & linguistic confusion. Being [Black] or regardless of being that genetic phenotype has no linkage to the way you speak. What does has a linkage are varying. People like to link where you were born to how you were raise.. well many factors can contribute to the matter in which a person speaks.
I am a linguistics student in my 3rd year. Accents is the left over sound draw from their speech. I think there has been a confusion over many aspects of speech/ communication. [BLACK]-- people do not speak in any sort of manner. Black people can speak in numerous manners ways and speech in however so they many choose. Maybe there has been a confusion over the understanding of accents to speech construction/ sound production.
You are wrong. The pronunciation is different, aka the ACCENT is different. Even if they are not from the south, many urban black people turn on their blaccent.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, then don't correct me.
"if you is from" ...learn grammar you stupid fuck and don't correct me ever again.
If You Think Black People Talk A Certain Way And White People Talk One Way Your Dumb Ass Fuck It All Depends On Where Your From... Its White People That Talk Slang And Ghetto And Theres Blacks That Talk Proper.
they mean like how yhu talk yhu talk different from a black person, maybe they
sayin yhu dnt talk wit slang like a black person they not really sayin' accent they juss sayin how yhu talk yhu feel me ? lol nd yhur voice is different from a black person yeaa so thts wht i think
Yeah, there's a difference between a race and an ethnicity... but certain races have a culture that comes along with that race sometimes, and thus an accent as well
A lot of black people have a 'blackcent' no matter where they are from
I think the person should of said you don't have the tone of voice like a black person. Because black people do talk differently than other non-blacks. But I do agree with you there is not such thing as a black accent.
well it really depends. im white, black, mexican and japanese and i really have a cali accient. i was born and raised in palm dale, cali. and we do not talk high pich or fast ha
A lot of black people have black accents. Yeah, they have their slang to, but they also say words differently. "southern" is an accent. Just because they say "ya'll" doesn't mean it's slang instead of an accent.
You are a very well spoken man. I didn't feel that you needed to explain yourself as a professional, corporate occupant. I'm glad to see a lack of ignorance in this video and throughout this entire comment board.
Yeah, there is a black accent. And you have it too in my opinion. Like In Russia, people from Moscow speak one way, Krasnodar - another way, there are a lot of so-called Ukrainisms and the letter G sounds softer, people's from Caucas pronounciation is coarser and tough, e.g. Kabardians in KBR, where i do live for 22 years...

Not trying to be racist, but there is a black accent, and he definitely does not have it

Obama doesn't have a black accent. You DO!
MrDiegoEn 3 months ago

In general we as blacks do have a different tone of voice than most non-blacks.
omfgCantGetaUsername 6 months ago
@omfgCantGetaUsername Continuing on....
Wtf? lol
omfgCantGetaUsername 6 months ago
@omfgCantGetaUsername Yes. It's true of course we all have many relations to the south considering that was where our ancestors upbringing originated and many blacks carried the accent with them like they never left. Because so many other black people throughout the Mid-west had me thinking they were from the country as far Detroit, Chi-town etc. Just because someone says ya'll doesn't make 'em southern that's such a universal thing to say like over here in the northeast from non blacks too.
omfgCantGetaUsername 6 months ago
@omfgCantGetaUsername Some whites are so illiterate it's just sad they worst than some people growing up in the major big inner city conflicts. Some whites think saying "What's up dawg?" or saying "yo, dis, dat," with black speech but in Philly where I'm from the whites talk just that as well it has nothing to do with trying to hip like black people. Around Philly Italian, blacks, and some of the Polish/Irish hoods we drop R's but does that make us ghetto?
omfgCantGetaUsername 6 months ago
@omfgCantGetaUsername Up here most white people say yous/yaz and constantly use double negatives like "ain't no" just how many Puerto Ricans and us blacks talk the same over here too cus someone thought I was one. Just because we have an accent doesn't mean we don't know how to enunciate words correctly unless you dropped outta school. Lol. And you know how many southern white ppl that have speech impediments from the backwoods.
omfgCantGetaUsername 6 months ago
@omfgCantGetaUsername Sorry typos. I was trying to say in this paragraph that the way we talk here has nothing to do with any of the white ppl trying to be hip meaning (translating) like trying to be cool got it white ppl. Lol jk
omfgCantGetaUsername 6 months ago
everyone has an accent! you have an accent! Indians also have different sort of accents as america does. England having Cockney, Posh, Geordie, Scouse etc. Holland has a farmer accent, the intelligent way of Dutch, ghetto dutch etc. Everyone has an accent.

ok my thoughts are: there is a black accent. blacks kinda talk differently. it's a slang, you are right. but it sounds especially for non-native speakers like an own accent. but i think your accent is more white.

i think its because blacks are southern descent and since they talk poorly and slang in the south. i think it just stuck generations later.

i didn't know there was a black accent either thought it was just slang, but i knew you weren't from the south cause down here we don't say you guys & its just certain words & the way you say them thats different . i could tell you where black too idk how bt for that person that asked y dont black folks use proper english i think its just how your comfortable tlkin nd used 2 talking then its hard 2 catch it when your saying something wrong and i think black folks always shorten & change stuff
rachelspates 6 months ago
Why don't most American blacks speak English properly? Constantly, I hear transliterations of "this", "that", "there", "get","ask","bathroom", etcetera, AS, "dis", "dat", "dare","git","ax","baffroom", etcetera.... Some amazing phrases are: "Sittin' up there" when referring to someone standing; "Conversate" for "Converse",etc... Are feckless English teachers constantly being assigned to predominately black schools? Are black Americans simply resistant to proper Grammar? What gives?
gammerstang2009 7 months ago
@gammerstang2009 proper english is spoken in Uk, the USA venglish is a slang that has just become popular

Do you? Check out the video and let me know.
gammerstang2009 6 months ago
Are you saying ,"accent" or "aksin"?
gammerstang2009 7 months ago
why are you acting stupid of course their is a black accent ...its called southern with a grammatical shift which has come to be known as ebonics...you have it the southern drawl has apparently dissipated but is definitely still there and you have some of the ebonic pattern "this had happened" is a prime example. I do agree that people confuse slang with the black accent but i am not. the black american accent is real its a southern heritage with an insular aspect with a grammar shift (ebonic)
elchasai 7 months ago

Barack Obama does not speak ((BLACK))? What is the greatest stupidity that has. YEAH, I think it is the mindset of how [Black] people are opposed to how [Black] people really are. Because in truth, we are all people, human beings, & complex organisms with brains that produce thoughts. A psychological projection of a racial confusion than a speech production.
kazakhstanmkj 7 months ago
I think that there is a not a confusion over how in which a [BLACK] person speaks but over how the other person thinks. Seems like a stereotype of how they view [Black] people be than anything else. Do not let his racial confusion create further confusion within your thinking, mental well-being, & so forth.
kazakhstanmkj 7 months ago
I am hearing a lot of varying concepts from slang, jargon, lexicon & linguistic confusion. Being [Black] or regardless of being that genetic phenotype has no linkage to the way you speak. What does has a linkage are varying. People like to link where you were born to how you were raise.. well many factors can contribute to the matter in which a person speaks.
kazakhstanmkj 7 months ago
Hi,
I am a linguistics student in my 3rd year. Accents is the left over sound draw from their speech. I think there has been a confusion over many aspects of speech/ communication. [BLACK]-- people do not speak in any sort of manner. Black people can speak in numerous manners ways and speech in however so they many choose. Maybe there has been a confusion over the understanding of accents to speech construction/ sound production.
kazakhstanmkj 7 months ago
@nigelholland3
I'm not talking about slang.
You are wrong. The pronunciation is different, aka the ACCENT is different. Even if they are not from the south, many urban black people turn on their blaccent.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, then don't correct me.
