The South Texas cotton season has these crop dusters operating from dawn 'til dusk. 30 minutes for these pilots was. I also did some of the maintinence. I always found time to nap when the aircraft were at one of the other airfield operations. This pilot could have asked someone for assistance. This guy was dumb for trying to do this without the proper help. Or, if the lady knew how to hold the yoke back, adjust the throttle, and hold the brakes, this would have been a non-event.
As a teen, I had a job I had a job running one of the airport operations, I pretty much wore most of the hats. I would sit in the Ag Cats, and hold the brakes while manipulating the throttle, while the pilot would hand prop the aircraft. I finally told the boss that we should replace those batteries. I would then show up a little earlier, preflight, start, gas up, and load the hoppers of the planes, allowing the pilots a 30 minutes of extra rest.
This video should be required viewing for anyone studying for their PPL. Those who have been a pilot for any length of time know that sooner or later, we all screw up. I know that I have and lived to talk about. That poor guy must have felt terribly embarrased. No doubt he learned the hard way. It's just too bad that it happened in front of his girlfriend and that she got caught in the middle of it.
@psygn0sis I knew it was an old Cessna 140. Most of them are beer cans now. I like the last tail dragger Cessna's I never thought to look up the Reg ID from this plane.
@sonofjabba According to the NTSB website it was involved in another crash in 2000, which sounded serious enough to finish it off. IIRC the aircraft was built in 1947.
Now THIS is Da Stuph! I've swung 'er off a few times, but NEVER without someone who knew what they were doing in the left seat, one hand on the throttles, other one on the mags, and toes curled over the brakes down there on the pedals. At LEAST tie it down and chock up if you're gonna try this. Propping off is an art- you have to swing your free leg so that if you lose yr. balance, you fall AWAY from that circular guillotine. It's never easy. You gotta watch the old guys do it first. .
Dicussion.

Talk about a lesson in humility.
