that's Betty! they did a experiment with her and another new caledonia crow named abel in oxford. they gave them a straight wire and a hooked wire. when abel took away the hooked one betty just made that one

This isn't evolution in action. Evolution doesn't exist outside of a text book. These crows (and all animals) have limited problem solving mechanisms already in place. No mutations occurred, or natural selection, so it's not possible for it to be evolution. By design, the proper cerebro-functions were put in place so that all animals had at least some capabilities beyond instinctual. Adaptation is not evolution, it's just adaptation. It requires a trigger, nothing more.

When such a pattern repeats itself, those without this advantage are gradually weeded out of the gene pool, thus evolution.

Evolution is not a mutation, neither it is a sudden change. It is merely one attribute of an animal being favoured in nature for survival and thus passed to their offspring.

These birds are indeed very intelligent, there are some where I live and I saw two of them mimicking the nut breaking technique pioneered by the Japanese crows (vid on youtube). Both were sitting over a traffic light and throwing nuts down where a car would crush them then proceed to grab the nuts when there was no traffic. Very impressive

@eligeti89 People underestimate the intellect of birds. Parrots, crows, and magpies are some of the most intelligent birds on the planet. Crows also purposely drop nuts that they can't crack open, on a street, so a car can crush the shell, which would allow the crow to get to the inside of it.
