Remember what hes doing is harder than having the lyrics in your head already , he took these lyrics and had to make a hit from them ,and he made many ,its much harder hes a genius . think about it .
While Elton was torquing his nasal passages with coke, Bernie wrote with Alice Cooper, on his From the Inside album. Its actually pretty obvious when you listen to a song like Nurse Rosetta whos writing the lyrics.
@TheAssmutt I am not saying he is as good as Mozart, I wouldn't know enough about that. I was just figuratively speaking his music will last as long as their's has. We can never appreciate enough the genius we have, that is within our lifetime.
see this guy is the real deal- he is playing real gospel and he doesnt have to prove it to anyone- any one else would have put some black choir-for-hire in cheesy choir outfits to prove that it is a gospel song- he has some white people singing. it sounds like authentic black gospel and that is all there is to it-
this is my understanding: elton wrote music and performed the songs, bernie wrote the lyrics. together they were great, who cares if they had sex with each other.
ELTON definiteley had the voice....but it was BERNIE TAUPIN that was the lyrical genius. please give credit were it is due. elton would not have been successful without bernie taupin.

bernie taupin was elton's lover and composer during their early days. all these wonderful songs were compose with bernie. in the late 80's and early 90's. elton was good , but was not as great as when he was with bernie. after many years of separation...they are now still friends and have collaorated on some new great hits. go to wikipedia or google the name BERNIE TAUPIN and read up on this. thanks for the great questions..
Bernie and Elton were never lovers, but Bernie did write lyrics for a great majority of Elton's songs. There was only a very brief period in the early 80s when he was NOT Elton's lyricist; and I believe that only one or two of Elton's studio albums does not have any John/Taupin compositions at all. During this time Elton wrote with Gary Osborne and a few other lyricists, including Tim Rice (with whom he later wrote The Lion King and Aida).
i have to disagree, i think the late 70's and early 80's was Elton's peak. we got alot of good songs like Ego. but dont get me wrong, his first songs were almost as amazing, and this was one of the first songs but elton i heard, and i've loved it ever since
Hearing this song, from 1972...reminds me....of when I was in junior high school at the time....Elton was the biggest thing in the those days....he was a big deal to the back end Baby Boomers!
Fantastic! Thank you! Do you have more from this show? I love his look in this one. This is a beautiful song, performed by an amazing singer with a awesome voice!

He has more hair now than when he was 21? You would think with all the dosh he has he would buy a rug worthy of his status One where you couldnt tell Shit if i had his dosh i would buy a syrup for every day of the week (SEAMLESS) But differant colours
Actually those same 'hippies' you mentioned are the same session singers who backed Elton on the original recording of this song. If they ruined it on this recording, what do you think they did on the original?
aretha does a good job with it, toa degree, but the way she holds out her notes just ruins the feel that Elton gives it, he's straightforward witht he lyrics and has a driving tone and rhytm throughout the hwole song and Aretha doesn't get me goign the same, Elton does this as a pop song not a soul song and it was meant to remain as pop
This was a rare time for Elton that we will never see again. He was nearly a starving artist when this first came out. Like all the great artists and composers their best work was when they were in tune to the world and suffering with the world. If that ain't real soul, what is?
It's so disappointing that the "Rocket Man" has almost no archive footage, and the "Dream Ticket" box set didn't either. This concert is in my top 5 wish list.
i love this song being performed by elton but Aretha´s cover is SIMPLY THE BLAST! she totally overtops elton with just the first notes! Add some SOUL to everything and things turn into gold!
Okay, here's the thing. They didn't put that many classical musicians together in front of an audience for one song, so this was an entire concert. And they didn't just turn the camera on for this one song and then turn it off for the rest of the night. So the question is, where is the rest of this footage and why wasn't it made available to EJ fans at some point over the past 35 years?
Not bad gospel for a fellow atheist! Haha keep rocking elton, and keep freethinking!

He looks every bit of a classical pianist. Elton is Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart of our time.

@JoeD60 Not really. But he's not a bad pianist, nonetheless.

Indeed. I seem to recall that more than a few folks thought Elton *was* black when they first heard him.

Well, that IS Elton, but of course, he was awesome during the first half of the 70´s.

Right, that first half was close to perfection and rarely recognized, except for some fellow musicians, including John Lennon.

But it 'lends' itself to a soul arrangement and that's why Aretha covered it! A great song can do this.
