@Lycanthrokeith 1. only the cracked ones disappear. They're sometimes used in Romhacks to make "Grapple Doors", because they can only be destroyed by grappling onto them. you don't even have to stay grappled to them; grappling them once starts a timer after which they break.
@Lycanthrokeith 2. you can hurt every boss in the game except Crocomire (and Kraid, when his mouth is closed) with Power Bombs, but PB's damage rating is somewhere in between a missile and a super missile. they can hit twice - but only on normal enemies, since bosses have invincibility frames to prevent that from happening.
@khaoliang Makes sense. I usually try using things like that in games as damage avoidance more than boss damage infliction. Seems like, if timed right, it would negate all the fire and make that middle part easier. Just guessing, though, since I've never played this game (I know, for shame).
@Lycanthrokeith I recall that I once tried to do just what you suggested, destroying his shots with a Power Bomb. I am not sure exactly what happened when I did that, but I recall that it didn't work. If I recall right, Phantoon's shots wouldn't "die" to a single Power Bomb. You also can't spam Power Bombs (you _have_ to wait until the Bomb has completely exploded), so the timing for this method would just be awkward, which is probably the reason why I found it improbable.
@IidoTheFox Really? That's interesting. I was referring to the fact that in Zero Mission the pirate mothership was the last area and that apparently the same ship as the wracked ship... Though the layout is completely different, so...
You know he only does the thing where he goes to the top of the screen and uses spiral flame crap when you hit him with super missiles. Using normal missiles skips that part.
@KilloZapit that is not completely correct. It is true that it is actually much easier to kill him with normal missiles, although it takes more time than using Super Missiles on him, but even with missiles, you can get him to do his "Danmaku"-attack. The thing is that it isn't exactly activated by a Super missile, but by going over a certain amount of damage in a short amount of time. If you hit him with about three to four missiles in quick succession, he will screech and do his shit as well.
@KilloZapit he only disappears after he has taken enough damage to make him screech, which announces his Danmaku-Attack; otherwise, he is timerbased. Thus, he will fade immediately after a Super missile hit. If you use normal missiles, it is quite possible to hit him multiple times, and when you're close to him, you can fire more rapidly because the missiles detonate immediately. I often was able to shoot up to 4 missiles in his eye, which is when I found out that you better stop after three.
@khaoliang It's funny because I saw a reverse boss run vid the other day where someone used the plasma beam on him and it did massive damage but he didn't react. Is it only for missiles, or does the plasma beam's extra ripping damage not count for that?
@KilloZapit that might very well be the case. The game seems to differentiate between Beam damage and Explosion damage, since some enemies like Fake Kraid are more vulnerable to missiles. I guess the programmers made Phantoon react to explosion damage only. If you want to know more, read this: metroid-database (dot) com (slash) sm (slash) smdamage (dot) txt
That's kinda hard to do because the gravity suit is on the wrecked ship, and to get on the wrecked ship you pretty much need the hook unless you have mastered the noble art of Shinesparking or bomb jumping >_>
@Anzariel On my first run...I got to the ship by going through all of Maridia. ...I thought it was the only way to it, I had no idea you could easily access it before going through Maridia. I fucking hated Maridia ever since, even WITH the gravity suit. Horrid memories...
@Mother3Fan12 not a problem,he's new to the series and the game is quite easy.

1:13 - Do all those grapple points break after a certain time, or just the cracked ones?
14:46 - Prior to, y'know, wrecking it.
Is the Wrecked Ship boss vulnerable to Super Bombs? Seems like they'd take out all the fire and easily hit him when he's solid.
