I think that sintel might see the dragon soon after the end of the movie. she might either be struck with grief that she took this young dragons father away from it, and not want it, for it reminds her of what she has done. or, feel sorry for its loss, and help it, like she helped scales. I think she at least notices it, if you look at 2:38, she is looking at scales kid. so obviously they meet. what happens next... idk.
It seems that while professional studios get worse and worse, the indie movies get better. And when the indie studios become professional, they lose whatever it was that made them good. They do it not for profits but because they want to. And that is what makes them great. When they do it for profit, they don't love the project, and without love the project is nothing.
Why does everyone think it's sad? I think it's a lovely song and it sounds a bit like "Cruel Moon" by Arca (YouTube it). Both songs have almost the same lyrics. The Sintel movie is best. Bravo Blender!

An old bum and thief scraping for food, guilt ridden for forsaking her little dragon and left to only imagining the horrible things that were or were not being done to him. At least now she knows, and Scales knows she didnt forsake him. She's stronger than before, she gained a friend and shelter with the old man, and she's got a second chance with Scale's little cub. If anything is clear, is that Sintel is no coward. "Killing herself" would let Scales down, abandon a baby dragon and piss on her brave long journey.
Most movies today are not nearly at captivating and passionate as this story was and this was only 15 minutes. For such a short time I was really attached to the story and this song is perfect!

@SwornReaper She got a bit older too, she looks starved, exhausted, bruised and very dirty. The cave is dark and the only light source is of a blueish color. Besides, you can see when she rescues Scales in the beginning that he recognizes her by smell and he didn't have time to smell her before because he was protecting his offspring from what he perceived to be an armed assailant.
This was a really good animation. I loved it, but I kind of disliked the ending, it was a good ending, new, in the middle of all these crappy "and they lived happy ever after" or something... But still I did not expect the dragon to die... It was really sad. And I have to say, this song is amazing!
