What's totally awesome about this opening sequence was that the people who formed GAINAX did it more or less on a shoestring budget--an animation sequence that is truly far ahead of its time (pun very intended given the song used!).
@TurboTom3000 Daicon is a japanese Science Fiction convention that occasionally gets held in Osaka. Daicon III was the opening ceremony animation for the third Daicon Convention, this was for the fourth.

This is just as much a classic to me as EarthBound.

I watch this everyweek, everytime I draw since 4 years now, and I still drop a little tear at 4:30.
This is so beautifull. No f***** cgi, only drawing and passion. Passion. This is what most animes lack nowadays

The beginning of the legendary epicness of an all encompassing halo of emotions crafted in just one single short film animation from Gainax.

Masterpiece. It's nothing short of the best fanwork ever.

Would this count as an early example of an AMV?
AlexSpalex1 1 year ago
@AlexSpalex1
Yes. Daicon III and IV are probably the first ones ever made in fact.

@AlexSpalex1 This would probably count as the first AMV.

These videos were made for sci-fi/fantasy/comics conventions, and even over in Japan, American superheroes have fans.

Nice to see that the gainax bounce is older than I am.

I was just waiting for the video to erupt into guitar thrashing after the threads of dialogue lol, that video was amazing!
Seeing that among a crowd... it had to be thrilling!

I hope they don't make a new Daicon video today.
With the new quality of anime it would look like terrible, zig-zag-haired graffitti.

The amazing ELO + anime done with the manual labours of inspired people = Win
Pause at 3:55 to see what I think is Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia, back when they were better known as books. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@Sacto1654 NOT TO MENTION some of these guys were self taught in art and animation production with very sparse schooling... AMAZING!!

Wow that was awesome. In FLCL they paid homage to this by having Haruko dressed as a bunny girl while riding her guitar and yelling "Daicon V".
iam16bit 2 years ago
well it does help that the guys who did this, founded Gainax, the creators of FLCL.

Thanks! But why no HD? T_T
Tachibana84 2 years ago
No HD version is available, as it was a rare video. Only a laserdisc version is available but that also has a low quality of video.
chogiebear 2 years ago
you may like it or not but what you can't deny it's the fact that anime wouldn't be the same without this masterpiece

Pretty much every anime has referenced the Daicon animations at least once.
It's a pretty good music video too :P
