I am driving an i30. It is a surprisingly good car. Hyundai were smart, they designed it in Germany where some of the best car designers live and produced it in the far east.
this focus is heavy as tank! almost 2 tones! 2 tones! in a hatch!..it's to much.. and i was driven today in brand new i 30, it's made from very good materials, and it's comfy as you wouldn't believe it! really, for less money, you get very good car!
Why dont they do a real test, i bought the i30 and im a ford fanatic, took the ford for a drive, rougher thirstier and more expensive what about that crap puncture repair kit rather then a tyre? I30 has more then enough and 4.7l per 100km kicks focus ass, as well as now it has a fivestar ancap!

Did no one notice that the Hyundai is a lot smaller than the Focus? How can they even be compared? The Focus is about 0,2 tons heavier and it still accelerates faster and uses only a little bit more fuel etc.

@dhkchannel well I think they're right. I've come across one recently, and it really really stuns be how Hyundai has improved. Firstly, it is indeed very economical, even under everyday circumstances. Secondly, I think it's more powerful than they say really. Accelerate off the trafic lights, reach second gear, do as you normally do, which is get on the throttle a little bit more, and the car shoots forwards like a rocket. Thirdly, it is also very nicely designed inside the car. It is amazing !
@Douglas6250 Honestly, i had a friend in Denmark who has i30 diesel and when he borrowed his dad's bmw 1series for the weekend, i began to appreciate hyundai more. The ride in the bmw was very rough, i could feel every bumb on the road and it was very tight inside with the doors being very thick. Also I stated and he later agreed with me that the i30 was quicker than the bmw, dnt 4get the i30 is diesel and the bmw is gasoline, the i30 ran uphills quickly overtaking other cars than the bmw.
well noting the i30 is so much cheaper and so much more reliable as is claimed here by its owners, i am a bit surprised its the only budget-beater that is not selling like hot cakes! I would either take the Ford Focus, and if I were buying on a budget then i would rather buy a second hand Focus or a Toyota Corolla. Hyundai still has a lot to do to prove itself as a worthy contender and not a cheap pretender. They havent even beaten Kia yet.
@enemay only if you live in large centres where you can get parts and support I like my Ford and having easily accessable parts and service. If I own a Mazda I would have to order all the parts myself and stick them in myself (no certified Mazda shops in Yellowknife, Canada) :(
@ryno200 there are Ford / Volvo dealers. (Ford operates with many names, such as Mercury, and Lincoln. they also share vehicles designs with Mazda. for example the The 2005 Ford Escape, and the Mazda Tribute)
Here in the states, the Focus wagon was eliminated years ago, and the i30 (which is called the Elantra "Touring" to justify a premium price) is pretty good. Worse than a regular Elantra, though. I thought it was tighter (I'm 6-2 so I notice these sort of things) than the regular sedan Elantra. Its also a lot slower. It has the same engine in a bigger body, which makes it slow at low revs. (0-30 is painful) It handles the same (same electric steering).

The reason they are not bringing the focus rs over to America is because America has to many emission rules but they are gonna try to bring it over. They are also talking about merging RS and SVT and bringing that company over here so hopefully we will get something good!

it is much cheaper for the company to have factories for each region in the world. do you expect for them to have the cars produced in Korea (not Corea) and then send them all around the world? they would bankrupt in 2sec. Many car companies have their cars produced in different countries, just because of the cheaper working force. it's all about the economy
Are you d@mb or what? Where is the Focus designed and built? Is it in America? Sorry asking that, but I am not sure if somebody has already told you that Ford is an American car company. By your own measure of things it should be an all American car, but it turns out to be just as American as an i30 is Korean.
That's not entirely true, Ford still have a significant design and maufacturing base in the UK, engines and transmissions are produced here as well as design and development of some models.
I do agree, the Focus was designed in Germany though.

You have to remember though that Fords not only tend to be better in Europe, they're also more expensive, and the US car market is very price competitive. Not enough people would want to buy expensive small cars in the US to justify building a factory to make them.
Whereas in Europe the high price of fuel, insurance, and taxes create a huge incentive to own small cars, even more expensive small cars that are more luxurious / handle better. That incentive is absent in the US.
@redbeast2 have you seen the highways lately? more and more people in the us are trading in there suv's for smaller fuel efficient cars. realy the only people who dont have them, eather own trucks, or are just still living in the past were you had to have a big engine to be fast. ford is comming out with a new focus next year for the world. witch i'm realy gonna consider getting into :)

buy from uk and drive on the right,, Get a 5 pot volvo turbo engine focus, even a ST 225bhp focus with a Basic remap can shift a bit. Thats before you get too involved with tunning, A dreamscience remap works well. I was reading a ford magazine, Some guy has managed to get his ST focus upto 330bhp. Claims 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds.. The ST is first generation 2.5 turbo in uk, Or you could just buy a volvo S60 T5R. 300bhp grandad car, same engine as RS
@hartattack940 Ford is American, were not getting ripped off, these cars are designed by German engineers for European buyers not for Americans. The same way that there are virtually ZERO Toyota Tundras in Japan. Tundras are Japanese, designed by American engineers for American buyers.
have to say i personally hate the i30 the gear box is really clicky driving in town at 20 to 30 mph in 3 or 4th gear my right leg got real bad cramp every time i went to brake i banged my keen on steering wheel base only good thing is the stereo bloody great but everything else a real let down
I can't believe these posts. Have you actually visited the Hyundai dealership and sat in an i30. The car is 3k cheaper than a Focus and you get more spec. The interior is gorgeous and styling was designed by the Germans. The Koreans have arrived!!
The European car manufactures better watch out. I wonder why the best selling car on the scrappage scheme is made by Hyundai. Is it because their good value for money and they have won awards in other countries.
I would buy that gorgeous blue Focus hatchback in a second if it was sold here in the U.S. Europeans and the rest of the world are incredibly fortunate to have this great car. Thankfully, we in the U.S. will finally get the all new 2011 MKIII Focus next year. It makes its world debut at the 2010 North American Intl Auto Show in Detroit in early January. I absolutely can't wait!
Focus is a way better, cheaper than i30, better handling, interior. I prefer ford focus. Of course if you like i30 its your choice, but in my opinion ford focus is one of the best in overall at this class cars.
The ford focus uses such inferior finishing, because of your comment i actually went to the ford's showroom and tried out the focus. It was more expensive and the interior certainly felt tacky. Power is decent though and the handling was alright. I30 was as good if not better plus i definitely feel the cabin was more quiet. That won me over. Good, no, GREAT job, Hyundai! I'm now questioning the credibility of Fifth Gear. Tell us, how much did they pay? =)
There's no way you could possibly say the Hyundai's handling and power are better than a Focus, that just isn't the case. The Focus has more complicated, better-damped suspension and a vastly more torquey engine. I agree it's not quite as refined as it should be but the chassis and engine are MUCH better than the i30's. Interior is decent but I do prefer the i30's. Then again, I prefer the Focus' exterior styling. 6 and two 3s. I'd still take the Focus though - it's overall a better car.
Well, according to me...price is also important, and the Focus is much more expensive, and they said that the i30 beats the VW Golf, so for me...the Koreans are already here.
No, that was old Hyundai's. Hyundai's are a fantastic car. My grandparents had a Sonata V6 & was great to drive, well put together, only had two slight problems with it, but overall, great car! Now they have an i30 petrol which they love as well.

Fifth Gear annoy me sometimes with their Ford bias, 134 bhp and 47mpg is woeful for a 2.0 diesel in this day and age. By comparison Vauxhall and Fiat manage to extract 150bhp and 50mpg from a 1,9.

it is much cheaper for the company to have factories for each region in the world. do you expect for them to have the cars produced in Korea (not Corea) and then send them all around the world? they would bankrupt in 2sec. Many car companies have their cars produced in different countries, just because of the cheaper working force. it's all about the economy

Are you d@mb or what? Where is the Focus designed and built? Is it in America? Sorry asking that, but I am not sure if somebody has already told you that Ford is an American car company. By your own measure of things it should be an all American car, but it turns out to be just as American as an i30 is Korean.

The Focus was designed and engineerd in Köln, Germany, built in Saarlouis, Germany. All european Fordmodels are designed and engineerd in Köln.

That's not entirely true, Ford still have a significant design and maufacturing base in the UK, engines and transmissions are produced here as well as design and development of some models.
I do agree, the Focus was designed in Germany though.

pfft.. the new generation of the american focus has been around in europe for years... and did you ever hear of a ford focus rs? they dont even make them in america because its a just as quick as the mustang and ford dosnt want to ruin the stangs reputation with a turbocharged 5 banger.. europein fords are SOOOOOOOOOOO much better that the american ones.. what happened to ford being an american company? there ripping us americans off!!

@hartattack940 They didn't bring the focus rs here b/c it wouldn't meet american safety and emission standards. Also, it probably wouldn't sell all that well. It'd sell a good amount, but it wouldn't reach how many are sold in Europe. They need to get a legal diesel here though for sure.

@hartattack940 They probably will with the new one once they see how well it's going to sell here. I wouldn't doubt if, with good sales, they come out with a 3-door hatchback again, too. I hear they're already talking about putting the 2.0L EcoBoost TT I-4 in it...

if I'm correct the focus st (2005) shares it engine with the volvo C30 (that to has 5 pot engine) although I could be wrong.
the same mite be said for the RS although they've may have add a few more bhp.
I didn't like the focus at first, but they've grown on me, I hope to own 1 one day as I've heard good reviews about them.

You have to remember though that Fords not only tend to be better in Europe, they're also more expensive, and the US car market is very price competitive. Not enough people would want to buy expensive small cars in the US to justify building a factory to make them.
Whereas in Europe the high price of fuel, insurance, and taxes create a huge incentive to own small cars, even more expensive small cars that are more luxurious / handle better. That incentive is absent in the US.

@redbeast2 have you seen the highways lately? more and more people in the us are trading in there suv's for smaller fuel efficient cars. realy the only people who dont have them, eather own trucks, or are just still living in the past were you had to have a big engine to be fast. ford is comming out with a new focus next year for the world. witch i'm realy gonna consider getting into :)

@hartattack940 the mustang gt does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, the focus rs doesnt match that. although i do agree with you even if you look at vw products and compare them with the european spec vw's. america gets the crappy models.

buy from uk and drive on the right,, Get a 5 pot volvo turbo engine focus, even a ST 225bhp focus with a Basic remap can shift a bit. Thats before you get too involved with tunning, A dreamscience remap works well. I was reading a ford magazine, Some guy has managed to get his ST focus upto 330bhp. Claims 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds.. The ST is first generation 2.5 turbo in uk, Or you could just buy a volvo S60 T5R. 300bhp grandad car, same engine as RS

The i30 is the kind of car you like it with your brains, not your heart. it's cheaper.
but (at least here in brazil) the focus is way cheaper to keep (maintenance and stuff)

have to say i personally hate the i30 the gear box is really clicky driving in town at 20 to 30 mph in 3 or 4th gear my right leg got real bad cramp every time i went to brake i banged my keen on steering wheel base only good thing is the stereo bloody great but everything else a real let down

I can't believe these posts. Have you actually visited the Hyundai dealership and sat in an i30. The car is 3k cheaper than a Focus and you get more spec. The interior is gorgeous and styling was designed by the Germans. The Koreans have arrived!!
The European car manufactures better watch out. I wonder why the best selling car on the scrappage scheme is made by Hyundai. Is it because their good value for money and they have won awards in other countries.

I would buy that gorgeous blue Focus hatchback in a second if it was sold here in the U.S. Europeans and the rest of the world are incredibly fortunate to have this great car. Thankfully, we in the U.S. will finally get the all new 2011 MKIII Focus next year. It makes its world debut at the 2010 North American Intl Auto Show in Detroit in early January. I absolutely can't wait!

Focus is a way better, cheaper than i30, better handling, interior. I prefer ford focus. Of course if you like i30 its your choice, but in my opinion ford focus is one of the best in overall at this class cars.

The ford focus uses such inferior finishing, because of your comment i actually went to the ford's showroom and tried out the focus. It was more expensive and the interior certainly felt tacky. Power is decent though and the handling was alright. I30 was as good if not better plus i definitely feel the cabin was more quiet. That won me over. Good, no, GREAT job, Hyundai! I'm now questioning the credibility of Fifth Gear. Tell us, how much did they pay? =)

There's no way you could possibly say the Hyundai's handling and power are better than a Focus, that just isn't the case. The Focus has more complicated, better-damped suspension and a vastly more torquey engine. I agree it's not quite as refined as it should be but the chassis and engine are MUCH better than the i30's. Interior is decent but I do prefer the i30's. Then again, I prefer the Focus' exterior styling. 6 and two 3s. I'd still take the Focus though - it's overall a better car.

i tried out the i30 before buying my focus and, be in no doubt, the hyundai's a hell of a good car.
but the focus just offers a little bit more, better looking and better to drive but they're the only things that divided them.
i'd certainly pick the i30 over a golf or astra.

No, that was old Hyundai's. Hyundai's are a fantastic car. My grandparents had a Sonata V6 & was great to drive, well put together, only had two slight problems with it, but overall, great car! Now they have an i30 petrol which they love as well.

You must remember as well what was Hyundai back in the 80s, they were junk (specially the Excel) but I admit that right now they produce great cars, I have 2 Hyundais back in home (a Hyundai Atos and an H100 light truck) but I have an Euro Focus too, ironically I live in Mexico and none of these cars are available in US
