  • tres bien!

  • @Notheus made me laugh!

  • Whether it was Harnoncourt's interpretation or the tenor's interpretation (I suspect the latter), there is no reason to take it this slow and to kill the flow of the movement by overdramatising the 'hilf, Jesu hilf'

  • voce bene pero tenpo poco rubart .mare di tenpo .

  • Stimmt! Das Gebet ist enorm wichtig! Ohne Jesu Hilfe und der Kraft des Hl. Geistes ist es unmöglich Jesus richtig zu bekennen. Der Sänger ist recht gut zu verstehen. Super die Koloratur!

  • "hilf" or "hilfe"?

  • It's not too slow. It's perfect.

  • Nope, still too slow...

  • Es handelt sich hierbei nicht um BWV 147-5, sondern um BWV 147-7!

  • Great voice but WAY too slow. The pacing messes up Ian's singing at bit...

  • Way too slow??? Thats not Rap ;) I think it's perfect!! No one is better then Nikolaus Harnoncourt believe me he knows what he does.

  • I guess I say that because my first recording of this was Anthony Rolfe Johnson's, which is much quicker than this. For me it loses something when the fioratura passages are sung more slowly.

  • @OperaLover84

I enjoy this as pure singing as much as any version, but i think you are right when it comes to the subject matter. I think the whole thing is intended to be more urgent, a crying out "Hilf Jesu Hilf !". i agree with the more frantic tone that many versions adopt, from an interpretative standpoint.

  • @RequiemKV626

Uhh, why are you talking about Rap?

  • Can someone please tell me if that is Leif Ove Andsnes in the audience? Right at the start, just behind Nikolaus Harnoncourt, there's a man who looks so much like Leif Ove...but I can't be sure.

  • oh! here's ian bostridge. his voice is magnificent!

  • Very peculiar pause: "hilf JESU.... Hilf".

  • He merely observing the comma.

  • I agree, he should not breathe so much in between words. It affects the flow and the tempo. And sometimes he is just not compleatly in tune. He has probably not sung this peace often. But, Ian is a very good singer.

  • It's called phrasing.

  • you must be german.

  • Note the break in the phrasing in the OBBLIGATO cello part when it INTRODUCES the melodic phase to which the tenor later sings "Hilft, Jesu, hilft!".

The tenor COPIES the phrasing introduced by the cellist. In polyphonic music, the follower (the tenor) SHOULD COPY the leader's (the cello's) phrasing.

I'm not saying I like that phrasing, but at least I understand why he sings it that way.

  • Absolutely beautiful voice, perfect for the piece, I think. But what do we think of "Hilf, Jesu......... Hilf"? Sounds very peculiar to me. I like him very much, I have a number of his records and I've seen him live. But that pause just sounded weird to me.

  • Actually, on reflection, it sounds like it was Harnoncourt's idea. Still sounds weird, though.

  • This is the first time I've seen Ian Bostridge in action. Wonderful, thanks.
