I do know they will be shutting this loop facility down, and replacing it with a larger facility in Lakeland. I believe it has to do with SunRail using the area. I will miss these trains, that's for sure!
DOOD, I miss CSX's B30s and B36s so much! I used to love listening to them switch this very yard. They were louder and had more character than the current-gen GEs.
@SpeakerPolice Nope, never heard a U18B. I saw one at Progressive Rail Services in Waycross in CSX MOW "Pumpkin" paint back in 2005, but it wasn't running. It's probably been scrapped now. :'(
I love any videos people have of a YN2 CSX B36-7 running LHF with its ditch lights flashing. :D
Oh, and for a bit of trivia, to show my dedication to how much I love the old U-boats, the "7306" part of my username is the road number off of one of CSX's U36Cs before they scrapped them. :"(
I only have a couple of videos featuring the B36s, but I'm glad I got any at all. I REALLY want to check out Waycross, but as far as I know, it's sealed up tighter than a drum, with no way to see inside? D:
I thought of an ex-Conrail C40-8W when I saw your username. x3
@SpeakerPolice Haha, well ex-Conrail units are good too. :D
Yes, I was lucky enough to actually get a tour of the Waycross Progressive Rail facility with my father back in 2010. It was pretty cool and the boss gave us free reign to walk around the whole yard and take pictures of all the old workhorses out there rusting away.
We essentially just drove up, the boss came out and we told him we were railfans, then he said, "Come on in!" :D
@SpeakerPolice No, I just didn't want the word to spread about how easy it is to get a tour of Progressive Rail, and then some idiot finds out, goes in there, hurts themself, and sues the place, thus ruining it for all the good railfans, like me and you. That's all. :)
Reminds me of the dumbass that actually was able to sue Amtrak after he climbed on top of a car and got electrocuted by live catenary...after going past several 'No Trespassing' signs. >:U
@SpeakerPolice Yes, just like when people try to sue the railroad because their family member got clobbered at a grade crossing when they went around the gates. -_-
I'll tell you, if I go through with being a locomotive engineer as a career, what I just mentioned above is definitely going to be the worst part of the job.
The main reason I want to work for a smaller road is that it's easier to be a railfan, and the rules regarding photography and videography while at work are more relaxed. :3 I have not heard about the FEC's hiring practices, but I do know that they are railfan-friendly. ^^
@SpeakerPolice Yes, I can see why working for a smaller road would be beneficial for many reasons, which is why I'm leaning towards a regional or shortline. :D
I agree with you, from videos I've seen on YT, I can see that the FEC is railfan friendly, which is nice.
Is college a requirement for being an engineer? From what I've heard, it is not.
Hell no xD You can become a crew member right out of high school. On most railroads, seniority dictates your position. You start out as a brakeman, etc. and work your way up through to conductor and then engineer.
@SpeakerPolice Haha, I laughed at the first part of your response. xD
But would a class 1 railroad hire someone straight out of high school? Or at least 3 years out of high school, provided you have to be 21, from what I've heard.
As far as I know, no railroad is actively looking for a college degree, as there isn't really anything on a railroad that would require a college education. There may be a minimum age on the Class Is, but I have seen guys much younger than me working for tourist operations.
It's not a scam, but the railroads are more likely to hire you if you have experience. Hence, one of the reasons I went to RailCamp. :3 I wouldn't go to MODOC though, as I prefer to learn on real locomotives. x3 (MODOC uses those god-awful abominations known as gensets. x3)
This video equals complete eargasm for railfans

I like the sound of the second one the best, with the faster idle. Thanks for posting

Well, that'll be a train that wont be running anymore if they shut down the intermodal facility in Taft, like I've been hearing about.
Interesting seeing 2 standard-cab units on an intermodal, even if it is just a local. Nice catch!

@SpeakerPolice Seeing power like that, who wouldn't miss them? Although, I'm more of a GE guy myself. :P
(At least in terms of the old B-boats, C-boats, and U-boats. You can keep your GEVOs.)

Ever hear a U18B? They sound like tiny ALCos. :D

I'd say to just kind of keep it a secret. ;)

@SpeakerPolice Have you ever considered being an engineer? You could probably still go for it if you wanted to. :D

For a shortline or tourist railroad, I'd love to! For a Class I road, no. x3
SpeakerPolice 1 month ago
@SpeakerPolice I was originally thinking CSX, then I was considering NS, then I wanted to maybe try for a regional. I don't know really know now.
Do you know if the FEC is a good railroad to work for? I hear it is, but it's hard to get hired because of the limited number of employees.

@SpeakerPolice Then why the heck do people bother to go to that MODOC railroad academy in southern California? D: Is it just a big scam?

@SpeakerPolice I know it's not a scam, I was being sarcastic...sort of... >_>...<_<...
Yeah, I went to MODOC's website and saw the Gensets. Definitely not my favorites, to put it lightly.
What's the whole deal with RailCamp? Like the curriculum and stuff? and location?
