This song is still relevant considering the current situation in the middle east. The final couplet is particularly moving. In the news every other day is the story of some young man being flown back to britain in his 'pine overcoat'., while the government would rather us beleive that we're winning and that they didn't get blown up for nothing...

Saying that, I know it's easy to think i'm just blaming Blair/USA/etc, but really, both sides of any war are no better than each other in a way...

john wellar was pauls father and the manager of the jam/stylecouncil and solo career.

He was a devoted dad and being an ex boxer needed his skills the speed fuelled late 70's when the jam were breaking out.

nyone having a pop at paul be it a dodgy punk or a record company owner would face the wrath of John.

Paul kept him and his family very involved in his whole career.

John Wellar died a couple of weeks ago of cancer.

John was a big part of Pauls life particularly in his early years. I remember he used to work in construction in the late 70's and paul used to help him between song writing. It must be a great loss for Paul so i guess we can expect some new material winging our way soon...
