WIZARD - CHECKING IN AFTER CHECKING OUT- DAVE MASON ID A TREASURE- HIS GUITAR WORK IS IN A SPACE OF ITS OWN - COMPARISONS ARE NOT HELPFUL OR USEFUL- ENJOY ALL THE GREAT MUSIC- HE REALLY PUTS ME IN A BETTER SPACE
Saw Dave at the Barn in Parkville Md. years ago. He was eating crabs, a Barn favorite. Then he blew us away with a GREAT show. I even got him to autograph my Alone Together album with the multi colored vinyl. Later he stayed at my friends, house. Dave come back!!
Dave Mason is one surely underrated guitarist. This is the only well deserving cover for this legendary Hendrix song. LOVE his interpretation. Well done. Thank you.
I love Dylan's, but Mason's is the best, and besides, he played on Hendrix studio version. If you had of heard hendrix live, Mason is so much better. mchapman is right.
There is a version of this that Dave did with jim krueger (deceased now) that is utterly mind blowing... thankfully I still have it on a laser Disc of a live concert Dave did.
tryin to decide which version is betterr, hendrix, mason or dylan is kinda like asking which is sweeter, "1 spoon of sugar 2 or 3" they`re all pretty sweet
@19Mari092 : yeah no doubt dylan is classic. on fridays in my printing class our teacher let us bring in albums to play, 1967, & 3 guys from another h.s. were dylan freaks so got to appreciate his talent.
@dogma123l Thnx, it`s nice to know someone considers my opinion even nicer that you concur. I was feeling that maybe I didn`t know nothin about nothin & that my thoughts or opinions didn`t matter.
Dave Mason recorded this and took this arrangement to Hendrix. The Hendrix version is a cover of Dave Mason's cover of Dylan's original. Rock and roll lesson.
@mchapman85 Actually, Jimi's version was recorded six years before Dave's. The Hendrix version was released on "Electric Ladyland" in 1968, while the Mason version came out in 1974 on his self-titled album.
Hendrix originally heard it at a party mason was hosting. Mason's recorded a version in 1974. This was after Electric Ladyland which came out in 1968.
"Joining the Experience for the initial “Watchtower” session was Traffic guitarist Dave Mason, who, it was decided, would contribute a 12-string acoustic part. “Dave hung out a lot with Jimi and was a regular in the studio,” says engineer Eddie Kramer. “Jimi was aware of his ability and felt that he could cover the part adequately.”
@mchapman85 Sorry but that is incorrect. Hendrix released this just six months after Dylan did and Mason played the twelve string acoustic on the song. Dave Masons version didn't come out until 74. Mason was hanging out with Hendrix and he knew that Dave was able to handle the duty of playing the acoustic and Jimi was shouting out the chords to Dave as they were recording the song. Hendrix also played the bass guitar on the final version as well.
great post...of this dylan song..I love dave mason.....but so many low quality versions of his stuff out the on the inter ent....THIS is superb thanks so much Mari
This is the version of the song I've been looking for for years - just like the old 8-track version but without that delay between the verse and the the guitar solo.
Does anyone know if he is in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame ?? If not he Should be,...Just plain Awesome version of this song,..I love the soaring Guitar riffs and classic rock beat,..Doesn't get much better than that Folks,..
I've always liked Dave Mason's version better than Hendrix. It's too bad Dave Mason's version never got any play on the radio. The lead guitar is just smokin.
I can't get over how awesome YouTube is! To be able to listen and view songs like this is nothing short of incredible for me! I hope someday I can get to view and or listen to songs from YouTube on my tv and stereo. In my first attemp a message came up like my pc is imcompatible, so I gave up for now.
This is surely a "timeless" song.. brilliantly written by the great Bob Dylan and performed by Jimi Hendrix and Dave Mason... both of which have done passionately phenominal versions. As much as I love Jimi, I think I like Dave's verson better :-)
So wonderfully close to Dave Mason "Certified Live" when youth was working for all of us. But, here Dave is still jammin' that masterful guitar with mood pedal and flanger - "It's Like You Never Left" -- and he hasn't left at all. Had a chance to see him in Tarrytown, NY and missed it. From the grapevine, I understand I missed aphenomenal show.Apparently played "The Lonely One" -- a rare gem for afficcianado's only. Dave is one of the greatest singer/ songwriter/ lead guitarist frontmen ever.

Wizard- I have head rush every time I listen to it.
Dave is without a doubt one of the most under-rated guitarists on the planet- he goes into a grove/ trance - I totally loose it.

Please: Dave and Jimi are both great. Diff styles, diff people.
Both are absolutely Legends. Sadly Jimi burned brightly but briefly. The man has passed, let's let him go.
In eternity, I would guess that they will play together and enjoy each other's great musical talent and genius.
INjoy it all folks.
It's ALL great. :D
