I fell in love with this bike all through the summer of 1983 from the magazine articles. As soon as they became available I bought mine in December 1983 as an 84 model. I already had an 82 GPZ-550 but I was totaly addicted to this bike. It was great to ride hard and fast, to race (2 years) and to just ride back and forth around town. I had it for 25 years (2008). It finally blew a head gasket and I started to fix it but got into other projects. I finally parted it out.
love the bike rode one in 85 c reg my brothers. it was very fast but the tyres were crap and i agree about the R1 comment but i think it felt faster becourse of the 80's tech on the bike.
Even on this video you can see the way it weaved itself around a corner!! More depressed since the world of the internet when i found out how much they de-tuned the turbo in favour of selling the Gpz900.
@CHRISTURBOT A cheap boost controller, increasing boost to ~14psi, and minor mods will give you the HP the bike should have had out of the gate. The handling? Yea, it's interesting. Modern tires do help.
@geonerd Bit ashamed to say that my turbo has been sat rotting in a garage for 8 years (much to the disgust of my Kawasaki loving mates!!) On a zzr1400 now which is almost as much fun but does handle a damn site better!!
I've had one for over 20 yrs now although not on road for last 8. Brill bike, unbeliveably fast but handling was..erm...interesting!! Still love it tho (and its outlived all my women!) but havent seen any on the road for last few years. Moved on to the zzr1400 cos its the only thing that can match the excitement.
Cool vid! Surprisingly, though I've been into bikes a long time, I'd never heard of these until yesterday when I saw one in the shop while I was in getting tires put on my bike. Thought maybe they were just one of those overengineered\underwhelming evolutionary dead-ends but it sounds like they were the s**t back in the day!
Bought one brand new in '84. Was the fastest bike on the road that year. It beat all the 1100's and 1200's. I payed a wopping $4200 for it. Somehow, I still have all my body parts.
The month and year the prototype for this bike (November 1981) was also the same month and year my sister was born. But, I'm more into motorcycling than she is.
@aaagri i just bought a turbo from a guy in wisconson..........any way i can get a copy of the presantation video? i have the magazines from it's time, advertismants and would lovea copy. im gtrimmer@yahoo.com
Had one new in the mid 80's. A friend had a Suzuki GS1150E, header, rejetted, etc. I could be 2 up on my 750 Turbo and pull away from him. Blew his mind! LOL
had 1 of these but i put nos on it! it went like stink, used to take the rear cans off it every now and then sounded great! have now got a zzr1400 but i still miss my old gpz
i use to do the same witht he scilencers - did you get a blue conical backflash from them if you shut off at high speed -used to sound like a helicopter - absolutely best bike i ever owned mate !
I own 1 that rebuilt with 880cc piston kit LOTS of extras in HP with 2 stage turb&electric shifter you can get up to 5 stage check out the gpz UFO article BIKES are STILL amazeing officially an antique in N.H.
i just bought another one!! i love them! classic bikes! they only need 2 small modifications, switch to "race mode" and a couple more pounds of boost..... and they will leave a zx900 for dead ;) These bikes were sold de-tuned, hence the hidden "race mode" Ride one in race mode and you will be very surprised :-D
10.71 quarter? Hmmm... Pee Wee Gleason was a noted drag racer back then though, so it may have been possible. I took a ride on one of these bikes about the same time I owned a ZZR600 and to be honest, it felt a lot less powerful than the ZZR. Nice whine when the turbo came on song though. LCD boost gauge was pretty cool too - very Mad Maxesque.
yes... the time on 0-400 mt. (10.70) is the similar of a today R1! It's very funny, for me, to see the wonderfull look of the young owners of a modern Hypersport of 180 HP after I've leave they back on street!
that's old school I remember the GPZ's, most people don't know. That the first Ninja's were GPZ's you could see. The GPZ emblem on the bottom baddest bikes ever made. They were the best during the 80's for sure. If they were still made today, they would be the fastest bikes made.
Whoa! Love this bike and the technology.

I had the 1982 Yamaha XJ650LJ Turbo Seca a few years ago. It was the worse piece of crap Yamaha ever made, and an arm and a leg at over $6k when new.
I only rode it for 100-miles before I got ride of it. It had mounds of problems.

Fantastic bike, had one of the first in the UK.
Good looking, quick, easily better than any other production turbo bike.
Anybody own A843 UOX?

Great bike, bullet like acceleration but my wife wrote mine off hitting a Land Rover head on in 1993...she survived but the GPz750T didn't.

Its funny how the interviewees don't seem very enthusiastic and passionate with their answers. Perhaps they rode the zx900 just prior.

They don't have a very good top speed but the speed in which they can bury the needle is horrific.
