"The oil pollution in the wake of Hurricane Katrina could be among the worst recorded in North America, officials trying to coordinate the clean-up say. The US coastguard, which is responsible for the marine environment, said yesterday more than 6.5 million gallons of crude oil had been spilt in at least seven major incidents. The previous worst spill in US waters was the 11m gallons in Alaskan waters from the Exxon Valdez in 1989."
It's interesting how anyone who wants to drill for our own natural resources is immediately caricatured as a "Right Wing Retard" who wants to fuel his 12mg SUV that he bought to make up for his small penis.
Because I guess it's impossible for an intelligent, rational person to think that using a TINY amount of land to drill for our OWN RESOURCES is a good idea.
Against offshore drilling. It was a bypartisan vote to ban it then and it should continue to be banned. Oil companies have not explored all the areas they currently have leased for oil exploration.
The oil companies lied about their operations once in Alaska. The drilling and transport operations are safe, and there is a world class emergency plan in place...just in case of an accident. ALL proved to be a lie when the Valdez split its belly open on the rocks.
If republicans say we need to drill how would any public official be against the use it or loose it plan so oil companies would have to drill on land they currently have or they loose it (since the alleged issue is access to more areas to drill, why not agree to use current areas of oil or let them go if nothing is there?). Opposing this is like granting a loan to someone who will not agree to look in the current bank accounts for any possible money. This smells of special interest interference!
Don't listen to the rightwing retards, Verner. They just miss the cheap gas for their gas guzzlers...that's how you impress women in the lower 48. And they haven't been 'driving' too much lately.
I disagree with the offshore drilling. This is not a matter of republican vs. democrat it is a matter of the environment and finding alternate fuels that do not kill/hurt the environment that we live on. It may create much more jobs at an oil rig but at what cost? Think about it. Oil rigs destroy our world. If one leaks it kills millions of fish that we could have used as food. The oil contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer which in turn will lead to our DOOM.
I support offshore drilling as long as the government uses the money to build an alternative and unlimited fuel source and put it in gas stations without the major gas companies' corruption getting in the way.
If republicans say we need to drill how would any public official be against the use it or loose it plan so oil companies would have to drill on land they currently have or they loose it (since the alleged issue is access to more areas to drill, why not agree to use current areas of oil or let them go if nothing is there?). We argue like children, getting nowhere playing the republican-vs-democrat card, the oil companies continue business as usual! The Japanese have a prototype hydrogen passenger car(runs on water) they hope to produce in the future. The oil companies and their lobbyists will insure we remain dependent upon gasoline until they squeeze the last drop of profit out of the ground. If we continue to use oil, the wells must have to be in someone's back yard. (or in some cases front yard!)
How bout my people? You know, the working folks who are suffering from high energy costs...and the resultant rise in food and transportation. You greenys got no compassion. And no good arguments.
Wow your saying he has no compassion? You support offshore drilling that will harm his way of living, and make little difference in the price of gas? Your not only uncompassionate, your also stupid.
Shut up little lib you have no idea what your talking about there is no glabal warming and if you think fish are more important than humans you have serious issues
Yes, it would take 7-10 years. But, if you know anything about "renewable resources", you'd know the cost of doing that would require an amazingly high amount of money, to the point where it just isn't worth it.
it won't make it any cheaper in the end bush's buddies are still keep inflation going. One little gas jump at a time. why gas is so expensive is because of greed not terror. or terrorists. vote
Only fags drive 40 mpg cars like that gay Jap Prius. The idea behind drilling is to drive 12 mile per gallon SUVs. If America went Faggot and drove fuel efficent cars then you would'nt have to drill in Alaksa. Next think you know you would have no reason to kill the Rag heads in the Iraq. Drill and Drive and Kill Rag heads. As dick Cheney said "The American way of life in non-negotiable". No negotiation with Terrorists like greenpeace and bin Laden. Ron Paul 08!
Funny that anyone would think more oil is the answer. Alternative is the future - oil is the past and offshore drilling won't do anything for 7-10 years.
Yes I support Offshore Drilling. Screw the Dumb fish, If your so Hungry Go to the market and buy yourself some steak and chicken. Dont Like it, AQUIRE A TASTE. How Can You choose animals over humans. We Americans Have Lives to live. Screw the Polar Bears and the Whales. The Idea of Offshore drilling will make more people work and live a better life. Screw the Democratic Enviromentalist, The Democrats have to Wake up and Say Life is Short, Might as well Live Comfortably. Global Warming My Foot.
someone should ask this gay eskimo if he supports americans getting raped at the gas pump?
someone should ask this gay eskimo is he supports nations that support terrorism...getting rich off of us...and gaining more wealth to fund terroist atttacks like 9/11?
Someone should ask this gay eskimo if we should wait till gas hits 10 dollars per gallon to do the inevitable.....which is lift the ban on drilling in America?
I think it should be up to the states, Just like Mccain is proposing. If Alaska doesn't want offshore drilling, that's their decision, same with Florida, Texas, whereever.
Werner your really courageous .but you have friends who will work hard to stop offshore drilling.OIL is just a temporary fuel of our time.the sockeye and all salmon species have been here for all time.the salmon must always be here for us and future generations.
today w.BUSH wants offshore drilling moratorium lifted by congress.MCCAIN same position.so here is my answer.OVER MY COLD DEAD HANDS will there be oil drilling offshore .i make one exception ,the vast pool of oozy oil just off KENNEBUNKPORT MAINE -where the oceanfront BUSH COMPOUND IS SITUATED.
yea but an oil leak/spill(which might not even happen) would be devestating sure. Kills hundred of fish! oh em jee! fuck the damn fish i want lower gas prices. Drilling offshore and drilling in america instead of buying it from other countries will surely cut the prices. We have more oil in our ground than the entire middle east. Start diggin bitches!
And I agree. Like I said before, importing oil poses a greater risk, so why not drill close to home? I'm just trying to raise a point for the environmentalists out there.
I know its like they think fish are more important than humans Im in california and the wont let us get water from the sacramento delta because there afraid theyll hurt the damn smelt a type of fish. These libs are idiots
Time to drill oil! Price of gasoline is crazy and ridiculous! affecting prices of goods and services! The way the gas price is accelerating I wont have enough money to buy salmons!
The Exxon Valdez was a tragedy, but rare. We need to drill wherever there may be oil and we need to drill NOW. Offshore drilling rigs aren't going to harm your fishing, Verner, in fact, it will cost you less to ship them to markets when gas prices ease thanks to the oil that will be pumped out from rigs offshore. We cannot continue this asinine moratorium on drilling while good people lose their jobs because they can't afford the gas needed to get to work. DRILL. NOW.
Im for drilling. this may sound crazy but you will have less tanker spills if you ship less oil. DRILL DOMESTIC! Everyone agrees we need to get off oil. We need it now! we are developing alternative energy. You Eco jerks will find a problem wiht wind mills, nuclear, and hydro anyways.
Offshore drilling requires tankers as well, including other infrastructure and releasing pollutants to operate. These can cause large disturbances to fish habitat. sonar can cause disturbances to whales. All the trawlers/fishermen in the area, who fish for halibut, salmon, pollock, etc. would be affected. This is our livelihood, and just like any gas operation, it will have negative externalities associated w it. We saw that with Hurricane Katrina, and we get winds like that in Bristol Bay.
I find it very interesting that you attack the oil companies as being environmentally destructive then you point out that this will effect the "trawlers", and Im sure "gillnetters" as well. For those of you who dont know what a trawler does, its a boat that drags a large weighted net usually along the bottom and scoopes up everything in its path. As a fisherman and someone who has spent most of my life on the waterI know the two most destructive forms of fishing are trawling & gillneting.
Instead of sitting on your high throne why don't you quit using ALL fossil fuels. Why don't you refuse any and all products made from the use of fossil fuels? Do the fish canneries use electricity and do the boats use diesel fuel to catch fish? Go back to your cave and quit using electricity to post your opinions, you're lining the pockets of the oil companies.
LOL! I would like to stop using all fossil fuels. Unfortunately we are all addicted to oil. Our society cannot function without it at this day and age. We will need to innovate ourselves out of this. So let's get excited. Please reconsider your nonsensical criticisms and help bring up alternatives.
I just think that we shouldn't be risking areas that provide so many people across the world jobs and healthy food. Bristol Bay is one of those great places. It's America's fish basket!
Oil isn't an addiction. We use oil because it's the only technological and economical fuel available at this time. Hydrogen is too costly and expensive and electric vehicle get 60 miles to the charge and take hours to charge up even though the batteries are many times larger than the tank of a gasoline-powered car. You sound like a mind-numbed eco-zombie spouting out the alarmist mantra of Greenpiss. DEATH TO RADICAL ENVIRONMENTALISM AND DEATH TO THEIR LIES!
Shame on you, no wonder why you call yourself a maniac. You need to educate yourself about biodiversity, and how the environmental movement has done a lot of good for the health and wellbeing for people like you. I agree that Greenpeace can be crazy sometimes, but we need to conserve the largest salmon fishery in the world that is Bristol Bay. So instead of spewing out trash like this, why don't you join the movement for a sound energy policy instead of drilling in critical areas!
Every area is a critical area. I don't care if it's desert with cyanide powder for sand and nothing living without a thousand miles from it, Greenpiss will oppose drilling. So excuse me if I take Greenpiss' cries of 'critical area' with a freight car full of salt. Secondly, oil drilling does not equal to oily water of doom. By that logic, the Gulf of Mexico should have no fishing in its waters yet fishing is a multi-million dollar industry for the Gulf States.
Very serious and important question not just for Bristol Bay but for all new potential offshore sites and the possible effects on natures food chain by greed.
yes, let's drill and get the economy going again.
