Who ever would've thought that Westerberg and Campbell would hook up? I still have my first Campbell Album (got it when I was 7) and I still got my first Replacements tape (got it when I was 16). Now all I need is Bob Seger and Steve Perry to do an album...MINT!
Not too shabby. But I do prefer Paul Westerberg's original over this. That being said...with Paul's voice in my ear...the pictures are fantastically sadly beautiful. I like!
He switches the gender of the lyric, from "you've got your father's hair..." to "you've got your MOTHER'S hair". Totally removes the emotional conflict and ambiguity from the song and makes it more ... well ... Christian. Bah!
So true, just silly comparing two American treasures. They are BOTH amongst the best we have to offer, and this version makes me happy. Happy to hear one of the finest singers ever do a song by one of the finest songwriters ever. Bet even Jimmy Webb wishes he'd written this!!
This is not the greatest song, but Glen sings it better than Paul for sure. Not bad I'd say for a 72 year old...how many can sing this good at his age! Great job Glen....he remade coupla other songs too, they sound better than the originals also!
Well, I think it's more a case of making a version more assessable to a different audience. I can understand your sentiment though. I tend to be partial to originals I'm familiar with.
It's hard for me not to prefer the original, but it's a kick to hear Glen Campbell sing it. I'd like to hear him sing it live without the overproduction.
Thanks for posting this, wonderful photos too. Westerberg wrote the song for Marianne Faithfull but she didn't end up recording it so the Replacements did a version instead. It's great to hear Campbell trying it.
Wow!!! What a song! And Glen is ALWAYS so GREAT.

Nice but Paul's sparse version is better, of course.

Great version of a song written by the greatest American songwriter alive today-Paul Westerberg. I hear Paul wants to write new ones now for Glen.

my favorite lp of the year, unexpectedly i must say. he didn't ruin the song. it's a lovely version. if anything it gives it new life.

This is not a very good song to begin with, but Glen's voice is always comforting.

Magnificent song! Great video! Well done all around.

He's kind of ruined it though really...he's made it all jangly and cheesey instead of really raw like the original.
