brake cleaner in a spray can works really good and its cheap, cleaned my 1936 Tula hex right up. I recommend also using Windex with ammonia to neutralize the corrosive salts after shooting. Mil surp ammo works just fine, if you are hunting with it I may recommend a mushrooming round.
You never actually mentioned how you started out... You're talking about hot water - is simple 'hot' water coming from a tab hot enough or should it be cooking water? Also, how much simple green are you using?
@atnipjoe id still at least do the bolt, If it gets stick bolt syndrome like most do, do this. This is of my "newly" purchased M91/30 from AIMSurplus. My M44 was clean when I got it too, but i was amazed at what still came off the bolt and out of the chamber.
I done this with sks's before if anyone thinks it will hurt the wood stock it won't but the wood will swell and the grain will pop up just a little nothing little sanding won't fixs
@JESSEANDISAACSHOW unless your redoing the whole stock then no. To rid cosmoline from your stock, just get hot water pour into a tub and steam the stock. That should break the cosmo. in the stock loose and it should wipe up clean with a rag or two.
Nice...I haven't ever done this, mainly because the cosmo has never been much of an issue on my mosins...now on my M24/47, it was a freakin mess, I could have easily benefited using this for that. Great vid, tnx
@20thcenturyfilmdocs Thanks man Glad the vid could help, but you should still do this with all your Mosins because all the little nooks and crannies have a good amount of comso in them, but if its not giving you problems when shooting your fine. Same with my second M91/30 hex receiver, i literally could wipe my finger an inch and had my finger covered in cosmo haha
howd your gun turn out? did it function fineafter this? Also what happened to the blueing? it looks bare on your barrel
