It happens! Drivers are people. They mess up. I had an epic stall today in a parking lot because I wasn't paying attention and essentially dumped the clutch without any gas because I was focusing on braking while moving backwards. That's what 100 degree heat does to your brain... I liked this video though. Nice Skyline and STI!!!

This Subaru has a top mount intercooler which needs are to do its job. When you are cruising down the highway with an STi with out a hood scoop and a stock intercooler you're losing valuable horse power and over heating your engine. I realize this whole conversation is lost on you because you probably don't even know what an intercooler is.

@linett122 lol pointless wing and point less scoop. Blame the Subaru engineers for putting it in such a bad location. There's no reason for the scoop to even exist there in the first place. It's not like it's feeding air bigblock. It's just there for marketing plus it's gimmick makes dumbass ricers like you think it actually does something useful.
1:The wing is there for downforce & it is very functional. The STi requires one with as much power/acceleration as it can generate & it keeps the rear end stabilized during extreme movement or deceleration, like cornering & braking.
2:The STi actually needs that hood scoop though it can be removed & the IC can be relocated to the front bumper. The IC & hood scoop are on top of the engine because it is there that the IC has less piping therefore less turbo lag.

@ladygodia: The Subaru Impreza features a boxer engine for about 20 years now and every one that had a hood scoop also had the intercooler sitting above the engine. Also this has nothing to do with ram air because the air that's coming in to the scoop is not primarily leading to the intake, it directly flows through the intercooler to cool down the compressed air. Some models I think even have little pumps to spray water onto the intercooler to make it even more effective.
@linett122 That stupid car isn't making a enough power to land a scoop that big let alone 2 of em. If that BS ricer logic was the case we' d all be running down the road with NHRA Snorkel scoops on our hoods. That be like covering up the air holes in your front bumper and then relocating your radiator on top of your hood and then slapping on a giant scoop to feed air to it. the only reason that scoop exist there is to mark up the price of the WRX.

A spoiler has nothing to do with weight load that is up to the tolerances of your cars suspension.
@ladygodia The people saying its downforce, yes they are wrong. HOWEVER< it does eliminate lift. (look up the phenomena. Basically at speed almost all vehicles start to lighten up (not ACTUALLY lighten, but due to the airflow an upward force pulls weight off the tires a bit., this affects handling) The STI spoiler makes the rear of the STI a zero lift. The newer STI models (06+) are zero lift on the front end as well.

The only reason Subaru's WRX has that pointless hood scoop and wing is to mimic it's rally car that actually does need those items. The reason for the hood scoop is to provide airflow to the top mount intercooler (which regretible isnt the best designed intercooler as it heat soaks form the engine) however that being said. An STI, or WRX, or whatever acronym you so choose to give it, is a high performance machine, that gets better track times then....

FYI, if you are out of boost (which, you ARE when cruising down the highway, there is no need for an intercooler, and in fact, its a restriction at that point.

And if you run direct port water injection and don't go nuts on boost, you dont need the IC either.

This Subaru has a top mount intercooler which needs are to do its job. When you are cruising down the highway with an STi with out a hood scoop and a stock intercooler you're losing valuable horse power and over heating your engine. I realize this whole conversation is lost on you because you probably don't even know what an intercooler is.

It's not like it's feeding air bigblock. It's just there for marketing plus it's gimmick makes dumbass ricers like you think it actually does something useful.

1:The wing is there for downforce & it is very functional. The STi requires one with as much power/acceleration as it can generate & it keeps the rear end stabilized during extreme movement or deceleration, like cornering & braking.
2:The STi actually needs that hood scoop though it can be removed & the IC can be relocated to the front bumper. The IC & hood scoop are on top of the engine because it is there that the IC has less piping therefore less turbo lag.

@ladygodia: The Subaru Impreza features a boxer engine for about 20 years now and every one that had a hood scoop also had the intercooler sitting above the engine. Also this has nothing to do with ram air because the air that's coming in to the scoop is not primarily leading to the intake, it directly flows through the intercooler to cool down the compressed air. Some models I think even have little pumps to spray water onto the intercooler to make it even more effective.

@linett122 That stupid car isn't making a enough power to land a scoop that big let alone 2 of em. If that BS ricer logic was the case we' d all be running down the road with NHRA Snorkel scoops on our hoods. That be like covering up the air holes in your front bumper and then relocating your radiator on top of your hood and then slapping on a giant scoop to feed air to it. the only reason that scoop exist there is to mark up the price of the WRX.

WRX>5SPD, 227bhp, 2.0L (EJ205/7), smaller turbo, smaller wing, WRX suspension, Subaru sports brakes.
STi>6SPD, 300bhp, 2.5L (EJ257), larger turbo, STi suspension, larger wing, Brembo brakes, STi badging.

@ladygodia since someone already explained to you why the hood scoop is there and there 100% right.. ill explain to you wat you called "an oversized ricer wing".. its there because even tho an sti is awd, the power is never equally distributed thru all 4 tires. when there is an abrupt weight transfer the differential can and will send most of the power to the rear wheels causing a bouncing effect and it is possible for the rear to lift and lose all traction.. i guess you dont know bout downforce

AWD has nothing to do with a spoiler and has no requirment for one. Otherwise you'd be seeing 20 Foot Spoilers on just about every Truck that you drove by idiot! I enjoy people who don't build cars trying to explain mechanics and how a car works. Spoilers have nothing to do with weight distribution.

@cletedawgthewalmart the purpose of a spoiler is to stabilize the tail end of the vehicle during excessive speeds. Which is a problem that arises because of something caled wind resistance not vehicle "transfer weight". That was a free lesson for you. Next time I'm going to charge you $3,000 for the course. I think you should quit before you further end up being embarrassed. AWD doesn't raise the rear of a vehicle off the ground. On take off AWD acts more like RWD. It's in cornering or on abrasive surfaces where AWD shows its purpose.

The only time a vehicles rear end with raise is when extreme inertia takes effect I.E. braking or the effects of hard cornering. I think either someone misinformed you about AWD and your trying to reiterate what they said to you to sound intelligent. What your saying makes no sense. A spoiler has nothing to do with weight load that is up to the tolerances of your cars suspension.

@ladygodia The people saying its downforce, yes they are wrong. HOWEVER< it does eliminate lift. (look up the phenomena. Basically at speed almost all vehicles start to lighten up (not ACTUALLY lighten, but due to the airflow an upward force pulls weight off the tires a bit., this affects handling) The STI spoiler makes the rear of the STI a zero lift. The newer STI models (06+) are zero lift on the front end as well.

Well, the STi does need it, because it is used mostly for racing, hint why it's known as a SPORTS CAR. @ladygodia Actually the STI rear spoiler does provide a 30% downforce on the ass end of the car at excessive speeds, i believe somewhere in the upwards of 120mph and up. The reason for the hood scoop is to provide airflow to the top mount intercooler (which regretible isnt the best designed intercooler as it heat soaks form the engine) however that being said. An STI, or WRX, or whatever acronym you so choose to give it, is a high performance machine, that gets better track times then....

Yes a lot of the body art, like the emblems and seats do pay tribute to its rally heritage, but it is all quite funcitonal and kool! Even you gear heads out there put kool little Cobra emblems on your mustangs, or SS stripes for example. Are they functional? no...but they pay tribute and yes...look kool none the less. You both lose.

1:The WRX's hood scoop & wing are completely functional. They're just not as large as the STi's.
2:Both the WRX & the STi NEED their hood scoops as they serve in bringing down turbo lag in comparison to a front mounted IC.

- This 'Ram Air' technique was used by many more than just muscle cars in the past century. Besides, it's much better applied to a car with a turbocharger & IC than it is ramming air to some 8.0L carbureted monster that has to be adjusted every 20 miles or so.

FYI, if you are out of boost (which, you ARE when cruising down the highway, there is no need for an intercooler, and in fact, its a restriction at that point.
Obviously you want it there once you get back into boost. Im just addressing the "cruising down the highway" part of your comment.
And if you run direct port water injection and don't go nuts on boost, you dont need the IC either.
