hey lucky you i tried for the first time and i got killed by a skeleton before even touching the water and next time i went all the way down the waterfall and then got ambushed and killed by 2 SKELETONS

If you can get some iron before heading underground, that's ideal - you need a bucket so you can get lava for light. The only other thing you really need is a bunch of wood, maybe 5 saplings so you can start a tree farm, and some pork chops to help you survive until you can start farming.

Pork (a lot of them!!), wood, sand (so you can do glass) , maybe some dirt (because it easy to use and it isn't affected by gravity, try to do a workbench! torches aren't allowed but lighting from furnace is valid! ;D (... I think...), don't worry about stones because you will have plenty down there. And try to make some basic tools, so when you get down there the first thing you can do is dig a hole near lava so you have light and wall-protection (from skeletons)!

Well, you only have 1 day to gather, so you have to be efficient. I got only enough wood to make a bench and pick then found some stone( enough to make 1 of every tool and a furnace) Then gather wood with your axe from the 2 trees around you you only need about 4 to 6 saplings. Get 6 cacti and ALOT of sand. grab those reeds next to the spawn, and asome dirt along with 6 to 7 seeds. If you do this correctly you should have time to kill animals. Also try and find ChimneySwift11's spot, its awesome

The things you need before you go down are 10 stacks of Non-Refined wood and 64 saplings so you will have wood and you can grow more. Also try to get  a sword and pick before going so you can build a shelter. You will want food and some wheat because it grows. you will want 2 buckets of water so you can make an unlimited water supply. I think people overrate the amount of wood you need, as long as you find a good open area for trees. Because your not making torches, only worry about 2, maybe 3 trees. Wood, you will be able to get again. But sand, this is the last time you will see sand. Get about 64 of it. Get a few cacti.. get a few saplings. Get like 12 dirt, just in case you don't find any where you make your base. Make sure you get atleast 20 cobblestone.

I've done the 404. Didn't last long. All my prep was for naught. And yes, I did spawn right next to the gravel pit, twice. I think it's better not to so you don't do a loop-de-loop.

My suggestion, modify the challenge for yourself. Allow yourself the placement of torches. Also before you go down wood is a priority. As much as you can gather. And seeds.
