I'm a Land Rover enthusiast and still remember this commercial aired somewhere around late 80's, but I think the director of this ad wasn't careful enough. On the scene where it showed closed up view of the winch, it showed a Warn Winch's black control box which eventually created rather a funny debate within off-roading communities: Was the ad made for Land Rover or for Warn Winches?

As far as I know LR has been owned (not designed) by Honda (Thats why the CR-V was almost identical to the Free Lander mk1 with only two wheel drive), BMW, Ford and now an Indian company. LR are still designed and tested in the UK. Same with Jag, Aston, Rolls etc. Just because the profits go to another country their still British cars as far as im concerned. Land Rover has as much an American pedigree as the Queen Elizabeth the II Apart from Series1 was based around a willis Jeep for the public.

Because British advertisments have to be factual and not misleading, Land Rover had Trading Standards Officers present at the video shoot. They actually did winch it up the Dam in the Elan Valley in Mid Wales. Albiet with a lot of safety measures and several batteries !
British commercials are very different from American ones, they tend to be less in-your-face but demonstrate a lot more imagination. I couldn't believe how poor adverts are in the US the first time I came here. Geiko have to be the lowest of the low.

There aren't any dams that look like that in the Elan Valley buddy! They're all stone, not concrete And nowhere near that big.

Because British advertisments have to be factual and not misleading, Land Rover had Trading Standards Officers present at the video shoot. They actually did winch it up the Dam in the Elan Valley in Mid Wales. Albiet with a lot of safety measures and several batteries !
Not sure if it is the Claerwen reservoir.

British commercials are very different from American ones, they tend to be less in-your-face but demonstrate a lot more imagination. I couldn't believe how poor adverts are in the US the first time I came here. Geiko have to be the lowest of the low.
