  • I have now found both the golf and tennis versions of this.

The Tennis version I found is titled "STW9 Perth Ident and Wide World of Sports Tennis Intro - 1989ish" and the Golf version is titled "GTV9 Wide World of Sports - Golf Opener '87"

  • Still gives me tingles from nearly quarter of a century ago!! And it wasn't all that long ago when tobacco advertising was still legal in some forms, evidenced by the big Benson & Hedges ad during this intro'...!!

  • Boy does this take me back. Both to my childhood watching cricket and to the last time I listened to the 12th man. :)

  • Was this opener used for any sports other than cricket?

I swear I have seen at one point golf and tennis versions but I cant find them on google or YouTube :(

  • @jfwfreo I can't claim to have ever followed golf but tennis was my life and Channel 9 had all 3 of the non-domestic Grand Slams (French, Wimbledon, US) and I never heard that intro' music for any sport other than the cricket...cheers...mjf.

  • Mate you made my day. Do u reckon u could manage to upload it again a bit louder? On my crappy laptop it sounds low as. Thanks mate.

  • lol @ the graphics :)

  • don't care much for cricket.. but i do remember that intro, classic

  • this should be done into a techno remix like the abc theme

  • Australia vs the West Indies. I'm betting we got smashed!

  • @mgo26 Yep, we lost 3, drew 1 and won 1...the days of Richards, Lloyd, Richardson and Logie smashing us about, Geenidge & Haynes opening consistently and the likes of Ambrose, Marshall and Walsh banging them in short and trying to remove our heads!!!

  • :)

I couldn't get this music out of my head for a couple of weeks now and so I came to youtube to specifically search for it..thanks a bundle for uploading it!!

    A Pakistani cricket fan.

P.S. I wholeheartedly agree with 183night re: Bill Lawry and Richie Benaud, two of the best cricket commentators I have ever heard.

  • Best. Intro. Ever.

  • I'm an '85 boy, but somehow I can still remember this intro somehow, I think they must have used it for a few more seasons after this one?

  • Channel 9 Cricket Theme :-

    Available on KPM 0433 CD

    Composed by Brian Laurence Bennett.

  • grt music channel 9,BILL LAWRY the heart beat of cricket!!!!!,bring back those color dresses and the score card graphics we had of UNISYS from 1990-1994 in australian tri series and world cup ,now its all shit dresses in cricket and shit australian scorecards,RICHIE and BILL we love you i wonder why they don t come to iND to cover test cricket when AUS comes to INDIA ,RICHIE last coverd during sharjah 1998,I hope he ll be back during world cup,old magic channel 9 u rock ,,

  • I have memories of this song being used for other sports too (and I think I saw a Golf version somewhere). Anyone know of other sports that it was used on?

  • oh man this takes me back to when i was a kid. nostalgia.

  • this is old as. but still cool

  • @vedyboy - It's a portion of the song 'Underneath The Radar' by Underworld.

  • Ah, simply bloody classic.

  • wow! how fucking retro!

they gotta bring that back......eventually they always do.

  • Is there anyway to download that audio?

  • it's at the begining of track 7 on 'still the 12th man' by The 12th man and it's available on itunes mate.

  • as well as about 15 seconds into Track 1 of "12th Man Again". Classic Aussie Sport + Classic Aussie Humour = Fucking fantastic entertainment

  • First used in World Series Cricket and they didn't change it until video technology went digital. This indeed the best intro complete with the sound of leather hitting willow. You knew it was time for some cricket. Even one dayers where good to watch!

  • there been using the same song for ages

  • haha i love this one the best

    thanks for the upload mate!

  • No worries mate.

  • Sorry, I tried to post that last reply to "maadcat", who replied to me further down.

But YouTube keeps putting the replies at the top now. Stupid.

  • This is what they need. Not this tryhard chich slick shit they have now.

  • totally agree with you mate, bring back the old school. this always used to get me in the mood for cricket

  • Now *THIS* is the stuff they need. If they're going to bring back Wide World of Sports as a full-featured programme, they need to use this. Not some lame, weak cut-down miniaturised version, either.

  • search for "Test Cricket / Channel 9 - Opening Credit 1998". Now THAT is what Channel 9 should bring back!!

  • No no no LOL!!

I agree that it has a hard rock edge to it, but that one was where they started stuffing with it too much — they put voices and other audio over the top of the music. And the whole theme took shortcuts with the notes towards the end like it was in a hurry ... they do this with all TV shows now, for the last decade. Attention span or impatience problem.

  • dont u just love that music

  • Music seems very Star Trekesque. lol (Not to mention the whole sci-fi feel to the visual part of the ad.)

  • Oh, sick.

  • were can i download this song??

  • I'm not sure mate.

  • one of the best sports intro

  • yes it is

  • is is the best sports opener music EVER.

  • Too true! The music is originally from the Aussie 70's TV show "Bluey" (Bargearse, from the late show).

  • Bring back the dots

  • Damn right!

  • Bring this into Back Ch9
